Re: [Elecraft] K3 - no output power

2021-03-24 Thread Harald Fritzsche
Hello Chris, all,

According to your current consumption the 10w PA driver is working, but KPA3
gets no input or has not 12V.
Check CB1 CKT BKR (KPA3 page 1 of 2 in K3 schematics) and check if TR-Switch
gets plausible voltages (KPA3 page 2 of 2, 7R and 7T).

Since there is no plausible idle current from KPA3 the CB1 seems to be defect,
most likely.
Not sure if this can happen.
Or give me a call, # sent separetly.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - no output power

2021-03-24 Thread Christian Janssen DL1MGB
I am not sure if there is a frequency shown when in TUNE mode. My memories tell
me that the top line shows the SWR and the bottom line shows the power.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - no output power

2021-03-24 Thread Christian Janssen DL1MGB
Update:

- reseted all TMP connectors
- already changed the pin headers at the KPA3 (had the 12V ERR some months
ago), since then radio was good for some hundred QSOs
- no transverter available
- serial number is 1532
- K3 receives without any problems
- uploaded the newest firmware

No change.

I don't have a spectrum analyzer, but I will look with my eyes if there is
something noticeable.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - no output power

2021-03-24 Thread Ray

Harald
I think you need to start at Ground Zero,,
Go to your Elecraft Utility
And connect to the K3 Radio and verify
The Firmware is present (05.67 ect)
I would go to the Basic mode of operations.
Set K3 to SSB operation Upper or Lower , Freq middle of band.
Set radio to PTT (not VOX) Ant 1, load to Ant 1.
Verify on K3 DVM , voltage is 13 volts.
Push Tune button (long for TX – with RF)
Adjust PWR knob Clockwise for Max RF power.
Take readings………. Ray WA6VAB K3

Hi Harald,

spectrum analyzer and more space on the table would be the best, but both not
available :-)

Additional information:
- internal voltage / current (DISP)

Standby: 13.8 V / 0.86 A
Tune: 13.4 V / 3.20 A

And still no power output on the external wattmeter.

It seems that there is something produced, but it doesn't exit the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Why is my K3 off frequency?

2021-03-24 Thread KENT TRIMBLE

The quickest and easiest method for zero-beating the NCS on an SSB net
is just what Andy described . . . tune for the most natural sounding

with something more sophisticated  But, as others have pointed out,
sophistication is seldom needed in general Amateur use.  There is only
one station in a net that all stations need to zero-beat and that is the
NCS.

The NCS doesn't care about stations off-frequency.  It is not his job to
tune for anybody.  He stays put.  It's the responsibility of stations
who are checking into the net to find and zero-beat the NCS, not the
other way around.  In fact, a good NCS will lock his main VFO so he
doesn't accidentally bump it.  If he needs to fine-tune someone, he uses
his clarifier/RIT.

The same holds true for all stations in the net (or round table).  They
should use their main (transmitter) VFOs to zero the NCS, lock it, and
then use their clarifier (RIT) knob to tune incoming signals as
desired.  Of course, SPLIT could also be used to accomplish the same
thing as long as the transmitting VFO is zeroed to the NCS and locked
and the operator doesn't get confused as to which VFO is doing what.

But again, I can't emphasize enough that the NCS chooses a frequency of
his choice nearest the published frequency in order to establish as
clear a spot as possible and all others zero-beat him.  This protocol
has been in practice in National Traffic System work since the advent of
variable frequency oscillators.

O.k. I'll bite. I started in amateur radio long enough ago to know how to use
a BFO and to know how to zero beat an AM or CW signal. How does one zero beat
a suppressed carrier single sideband phone signal? I just tune until the voice
sounds like I think the voice should sound like. It is very subjective and I
certainly can't tune to less than 12 Hz error.

What technique are others using that enables them to "zero beat" SSB phone to
better than 12 Hz accuracy? I seldom use phone but I'd like to have this technique in my
bag of tricks.

2021-03-24 Thread Fred Jensen
True ... the NCS is, by definition, the net frequency.  One can zero
beat CW and AM to within a Hz or so and with today's radios, you will
even stay there.  What's to "zero beat" in a SSB signal?

It’s not off frequency enough to care about it.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80 Meter Net ... 01:00 utc Sunday Night/Mon Morning

2021-03-24 Thread Dave New

Paul,

There was some guys on 3.816 LSB when I started listening about 1/2
before our net time. The typical kind of thing where someone would
say something, then a couple of minutes of silence, then someone else,
then a bunch of ID's at the 10-minute mark.

Rinse, repeat. This kind of thing can go on for hours amongst a bunch
of old friends.

So, watching my waterfall, I noticed that 3.812 looked clear, so I
started calling about 10 minutes before the hour, about once a minute.
Never heard anyone, so about 10 after, I called it quits.

I did tune up around 3.815 several times during that time, but all I
heard was the guys on 3.816. One of them, at least was splattering
almost down to 3.812.

I still have a very high noise floor from 3.8 up to 6.2 MHz, from said
neighbor's ATT U-Verse uplink, anywhere from S9 to S9+20 dB.

Thank you Gwen
I listened for 15 minutes before the net .. if there is no one .. as normal
i call it open
I found one of the crew, I am looking to change to the 3.7 range as I am
getting weary of this fight.
After being clear .. I get screamed at for taking "someone's" frequency..
Wait, and they are running USS on 80
Gaaa Yes, it is 80 meters
