Great news both here and from Wes. Kenwood is certainly the JA mfr who
has done the most to minimize clicks, their rigs test well at ARRL Labs.
In general, I found their user interface the most intuitive on the rigs
I've owned, especially the TH-F6A, which is still my favorite talkie.
Their new D74 digital talkie is the exception -- I couldn't do much of
anything without digging out the printouts I'd made of the pdf manual,
and it died just after warranty ended. The last of their HF rigs I've
owned was a pair of TS850s.

[Elecraft] Is Kenwood listening?

2021-09-21 Thread Andy Durbin
I would say they are. Kenwood not only provided a hardware mod for early
TS-590S power overshoot issues but they have also responded to other customer
service difficulty reports with firmware updates.

I have been personally involved with the investigation of several TS-590S
issues, either as the principal investigator/reporter, or supporting someone
else who found the problem. Kenwood fixed all these issues with firmware
updates, in one case issuing an update within a couple of weeks of receiving
the first report.

I wrote my first KAT500 defect report July 2018. There is still no released
firmware update to correct this problem or any of the others I have reported
since then.

I understand that Elecraft is a small company with limited resources. I also
appreciate the personal interaction I have had with the KAT500 and KPA500
firmware developers. That sort of interaction simply is not possible with
Kenwood. However, the bottom line is that Kenwood fixed the reported problems
and Elecraft hasn't yet.

The modification information will be available within a few weeks.

2021-09-21 Thread Bob McGraw
Nope didn't miss your post and comments.   While I was not model
specific, Yaesu is noted to be a key click generator due to overshoot
and keying ramp timing.    Jim, K9YC also referenced this in his
message.   {So it isn't just me!}  Maybe the 2 models you have are
clean, but most Yaesu radios have issues of this type.   I have a friend
and neighbor and club member that has 3 different Yaesu radios.  Two are
FTdx3000 radios.    They all have it.  He's sent his to Yaesu for
service.  They return it saying found nothing wrong.   I took one of his
radios and measured the artifact with my spectrum analyzer.  I then sent
the radio and the data from the spectrum analyzer to Yaesu.  There
response was "oh, must be the way you measured it".   Sorry, but in my
opinion, they are a bull shit company.   I would never use a Yaesu radio
if it was provided to me free of charge.   They do have good receivers
however.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Clicking Noise

2021-09-21 Thread Bob McGraw
It is thermal expansion and contraction as the metal temperature
changes.   When I first got mine, new from Elecraft, it had a case of
the snap, crackle, and pop syndrome.   After a few weeks the issue
disappeared.   Haven't heard it since and the amp is used every day.

I hadn't used my KPA500 for awhile, but I put it on the air recently. It's
working fine with my K3, but after it warms up - 40 degrees C or so - I
start to hear a faint clicking noise. It is coming from the vicinity of
the fan and heat sinks. There is a click every 10 seconds or so, I think
whether I am transmitting or not. Fan control is working fine, and I
bumped up the lowest speed to help keep the amp cooler.

Let me know if anyone has seen this before. Meanwhile, I will keep using
it and see how it goes.

  Dana, K6NR

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Level

2021-09-21 Thread Bob McGraw
As to the attenuator, a 6 dB attenuator rated at 100 watts is no big
deal.  The challenge is to switch the attenuator in and out between TX
and RX modes.

A better solution for all is to use a transceiver which DOES NOT have
the problem.  As Jim, K9YC indicated, many do and require either
operating system/firmware changes or in some cases, hardware changes.
I'm with him on this.

I can attest to the fact, my K3S, my Tentec Omni VII and Tentec Eagle DO
NOT have the overshoot issue.  The issue can be resolved.

ICOM, Kenwood, Yaesu.are you listening?

Of course not. Elecraft (and in the old days, Ten Tec) are/were unique
in that regard.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Level

2021-09-21 Thread Salvatore ["Ted"] K2QMF
I have a Yeasu FTdx5000 and an FTdx101MP.
Both are driving Elecraft KPA1500's.
The driver power is reduced to about 35 Watts on both!  I have no over shoot
with either rig!
Do not use ALC!!  Lower the drive power.
No issues!  Works Great...
