[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2021-10-23 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Another foggy, wet, chilly day.  Perfect to watch 'The Thin Man Goes
Home'.  Somewhere around reel three the power glitched for about twenty
seconds.  This takes down two switches, the router, the satellite
connection, the servers, plus the computer in front of me.  Normally I
reboot the main server and everything comes up just fine.  Not this
time, still no internet.  I pulled power to both switches and the
router, then started rebooting. When the offending switch got powered on
a DNS collision occurred.  That explained the error I had two weeks
ago.  Nothing like a power outage to debug the routing tables.

Our sun has become more active.  New groups are forming on the back
side and crossing over to the front.  They look fairly active, with one
tossing a CME away from us.  The flux reading was up to 87 last time I
looked.  While the local rain storms won't cause much static at HF, the
ionosphere may give us some noise. We shall see.  I have another Thin
Man movie in the queue :)

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

   73,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] Xfinity interference

2021-10-23 Thread John Kosko
Hi Guys,
I had a similar situation at my QTH in SE Lower Michigan with Spectrum. Their
tech came inside to install a new telephone modem and found high SWR on their
line to/from/within my house. The tech replaced all the crimp-on coax
connectors and the problem cleared up. He told me the shield connection of the
connector was the problem and he just replaced them all rather than take the
time to find the bad one(s). He didn’t replace any of the coax, only the
connectors. Michigan is the second worst lightning capitol of North America
due to the high copper content in the ground/earth. 73

Subject: [Elecraft] Xfinity interference

Eric, just went through the same thing here in Florida with Xfinity. They
showed up claiming I was taking out a large area (10 block square) on their
spectrum analyzer. Mine showed up on 16 Mhz up when I operated any band on any
of 4 antennas. I was using my K3 KPA 500 combo. I worked with them over 3
months giving them ideas and suggestions but I was adamant it was there problem
not mine. By the way I wasn't getting into my TV or internet nor any of my
neighbors. They checked their lines for leakage, and even ran new burried cable
to me but it still didn't fix it. I suggested they check their ground wire
going up their pole in an easement behind my house. Bingo!!! They had a ground
rod at the foot of the pole and a 30 foot wire running up the pole but they
never had connected it. I have since learned from a local ham friend who was an
inspector involved in several court cases with Xfinity over on our east coast
here in Florida, that this is common procedure for them. We are in the
lightning capital of North America and they, according to him, were trying to
avoid lightning strikes to their equipment. Lightning was hitting the power
company equipment instead. If you would like to contact the man who won in court
in these cases contact me at my call at arrl.net and I will give you his
contact info.Don, W4CBS Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G.

Re: [Elecraft] loop antenna question

2021-10-23 Thread Drew AF2Z
No experience with that antenna. However, among your other indoor
antennas you might want to try a 'cobweb'. I have one in the attic. It's
fairly compact; covers five bands 10-20. A while back it worked VP6D on
all five bands; 100 watts CW. I built the G3TXQ version. MFJ also has a
model for sale.

Not to be defeated, I am planning some attic antennas...

Towards that end, has anyone any experience with the Ciro Mazzoni Loop
Baby?

If so, how have you interfaced it to communicate with your (K3/K3S/K4)?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft W2: Calibration question

2021-10-23 Thread David Hachadorian
Actually, it's not the W2 Utility.  It's the Elecraft W2 Interface
Program. http://w4smt.com/sight.net/W2/W2_WIN.zip

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K4] loop antenna question

2021-10-23 Thread Douglas Zwiebel
Just checked out your QTH. You have LOTS of room for more efficient
antennas than that baby loop...for way less too.

Hey...you could even put a vertical on your truck and use that (nice
truck!). They can't get you for an antenna on your vehicle.

You have trees, you have gutters, you have brick wall! Many options.

Re: [Elecraft] loop antenna question

2021-10-23 Thread PAUL GACEK via Elecraft
David

I have a Baby Loop here in England when I am M0SNA.

I’m happy with it but not sure I would buy that style again.

Pros
Amazingly well built
Worked first time yesterday after 20 months of non use (you know, that COVID
thing….)
Quiet
Marginally directional
Great for FT8 or ragchewing
Handles 400w at 40m and close to 1000w at 10m
Works fine with KX3 and a 1000w JUMA amp. Tracks frequency etc but I had to
fiddle around with cables and s/w to get this to work.

Cons
Pain in the proverbial to “retune” when you move 1-2 KHz off frequency … 1-3
seconds retune period
Given above not appropriate for contesting
Steep angle of radiation limiting DX
Requires a rotator
Mounts 7 ft off of ground….not stealthy (my neighbors and wife think its uglier
than sin, however I quite like its look)
Pricey

Somewhere in my blog is post of the Baby Loop….nothing really than the above
www.nomadic.blog

While I have no first hand experience, I think the same company makes a “loop”
that looks like a car jack and is truly stealthy.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft W2: Calibration question

2021-10-23 Thread Dan Brown

There’s an adjustment that can be done in the W2 software, not the utility, but
it just fine tunes what’s displayed by the computer, not the unit itself.

The software, IMO, could use a bit of modernization. Really wish it could be
open-sourced.
