I really like the K-POD, except for the slow tuning. Too bad that the K3
firmware "cannot" reprogram it.

The K-Pod is an accessory control panel that's ideal for use with the K4. It
provides 16 switch functions; control of VFO A/VFO B/RIT-XIT offset; and three
general purpose open-drain outputs for station control. You can use the K4's
macro editor to create command sequences to assign to K-Pod switches.

For further product details, see:

  https://elecraft.com/collections/k-pod-desktop-control-panel

Revision F of the K-Pod owner's manual now provides complete instructions for
use with the K4 transceiver. The manual can be found here:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/K-Pod/Manuals%20Downloads/E740285%20KPOD%20Owner's%20Manual%20Rev%20F.pdf

K-Pod firmware was also recently updated: Rev. 1.12 lets you configure the
K-Pod's encoder to have the same resolution as those on the K4 (up to 400
counts per turn).

Hi Ed,

Take a look at the antennas on VK4YB's qrz page. My neighbor W6GJB
rigged a version of the first one that I tweaked in NEC to fit his real
estate and available trees. He's feeding directly with a simple LC
matching network that I designed in SimSmith based on measuring the
antenna feedpoint Z. If you've got the real estate and supports, it's a
great antenna for that band, because it's relatively efficient.

The antenna works VERY well, because it's end-loaded. Lengths are
tweaked so that the max current is in the vertical section. In addition
to tweaking those lengths, I also gave him the option of splitting the
end loading into two or three shorter wires running in different
directions. GJB has worked VK4YB several times; VK4YB and NO3M set a
630m record several years ago (which may be broken by now).

You do not have to tap the on-screen keyboard to enter macro text into the
K4. The K4's built-in Macro Editor supports ten finger typing with a real
USB keyboard plugged into one of the K4's three standard USB Type A
connectors.

An external USB keyboard is currently the easiest way to enter long macro
strings into the K4. Hopefully someday Elecraft will provide a new host
command to store macro text. Such commands would allow PC software, or
basic batch files, to save macro text into the K4.

Right. The macros are stored in the radios, not in the K*Pod. You need to
run K3 Utility at the radio site to load them into the K3. The K4 has a
primitive text editor for on-screen macro entry, one finger typing with no
tactile feedback. Not fun but no computer required.

Are you sure your ladder line is 200-300 Ω? My calculations say that 12 AWG

2021-10-28 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Your 130' dipole will be damn near impossible to feed on 40 meters as
the center is very high impedance. You would be better served to
hang a parallel dipole (33' per side) under the 65' wires and use
RG213/RG8 for the vertical section.

The additional 33' wires will give you marginally more top loading
and the coax will work just as well for the vertical element since
you are shorting it top and bottom. While you're at it, push the
feeedpoint up to 50 feet ... more vertical for 160/630m and better
performance for the dipole on 80/40.

I decided to repurpose my 80/40m dual dipole into a based-loaded 40-foot
vertical using the 80 & 40m wires for top hat loading on 160/630m.  To
do that I purpose to run 40-foot of ladder-line vertical and either load
the bottom using a balun for 80/40m or short the ladder line for the

My question is what balun to use for 80/40m. ladder line is 200-300 ohm
whereas the dipoles are near 50-ohm.  Should I use a 9:1 balun or would
my original 1:1 balun work?  Tuners will be in the shack (KXAT at 100w;
Drake MN-2000 at 1200w).  RG-13 coax to base of ladder-line.

I have a couple vac-relays to short the ladder-line and connect the
loading coil for 160/630m.

[Elecraft] feeding a half-wave dipole with ladder line

2021-10-28 Thread Ed Cole

I am redesigning my 40/80/160/630m antennas.

A year ago the tower I was supporting my 630m Invert-L was damaged by
wind and taken down. Replacement tower is shorter so not suitable end
wire support for HF antenna.

I decided to repurpose my 80/40m dual dipole into a based-loaded 40-foot
vertical using the 80 & 40m wires for top hat loading on 160/630m. To
do that I purpose to run 40-foot of ladder-line vertical and either load
the bottom using a balun for 80/40m or short the ladder line for the
loaded vertical.

http://www.kl7uw.com/630mTee.jpg

My question is what balun to use for 80/40m. ladder line is 200-300 ohm
whereas the dipoles are near 50-ohm. Should I use a 9:1 balun or would
my original 1:1 balun work?  Tuners will be in the shack (KXAT at 100w;
Drake MN-2000 at 1200w). RG-13 coax to base of ladder-line.

I have a couple vac-relays to short the ladder-line and connect the
loading coil for 160/630m.

[Elecraft] Win4K4Suite is now available

2021-10-28 Thread Tom
I am pleased to announce the release of Win4K4Suite. This release requires
K4 firmware, beta R25 or higher. Many thanks to Kevin Rowett and Brandon
Hansen who helped make this happen!
For those of you who have used Win4K3Suite, you will find a familiar
experience with almost all the same functionality only limited by the
current K4 firmware.
Win4K4Suite is a comprehensive control and integration platform for the
Elecraft K4. One of its key features is the ability to run up to 6
applications simultaneously over a single serial port or the K4 Ethernet
connection. While the radio itself allows such sharing with its 3 serial
ports and its Ethernet connection, Win4K4 will allow applications that do
not have ethernet capability to run remotely using the built in virtual
radios. This includes WSJT-X, DXLab, HRD Logbook, and pretty well all third
party products.

In the first release of Win4K4 the following features are available:

-Full control of the radio presented in a large and "mini" format
-Support for USB connections and Ethernet
-Access to commonly used menu items
-Club Log profile applied to your favorite cluster
-CW - FSK - PSK terminal with logging to your favorite logger
-6 virtual radios that allow you to run other 3rd party software or hardware
products simultaneously. They work even with Win4K4 over a network
-Macros
-Shortwave Database based on the EiBi Database
-Audio Oscilloscope
-Audio Spectrum Scope
-Support for the SDRPlay RSP devices

With the current firmware in the K4 the following features are not yet
available:
-Frequency Memories: Not yet available in the K4 firmware
-Native K4 spectrum output: Not yet available in the K4 firmware
-Ethernet connectivity of the KPA1500.
All these features will come as the firmware matures.

Here is a picture of some of the functionality:
https://va2fsq.com/wp-content/uploads/k4-large.jpg

The software has a 30 day trial. You can download it here: va2fsq.com

I’m right handed and use my right hand to send CW as well as to copy. So, the

Adventures in my 20's followed by a steady accumulation of birthdays has
left me with arm/shoulder deficiencies, aggravated by reaching out to
tune and adjust a radio. The K-Pod is the best accessory I purchased for
my very early K3 [S/N 642].  It gets the tuning and 95% of the switch
functions I ever use right down at my left next to the mouse and
paddle.  I can rest my arm on the arm of the chair which saves the wear
and tear on it and my shoulder.

I also operate W7RN [K3] remotely with the RemoteRig interface, and the
K-Pod tuning knob remotely tunes just fine but the switches don't work,
probably because there are no macros loaded into the remote radio?

I also purchased the Digital Voice module which I've used at least 2
times, forgetting that the only time I get on Phone is on 2 m and 70 cm
