FWIW, my K3 driving an Acom 1000 is set to 12ms.

Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s

2023-01-20 Thread Michael Carter
Hi Dave,

The K3s (and K3) bypasses the 100 watt PA module
when you set the Power control to less than 11
watts and relies on the KLPA3A 10 watt PA driver module.
No harm will come to the K3s when operating
at 5 watts presuming you have an SWR within
spec for the K3s.

I used a simple optocoupler interface
to key my K3 from N1MM+ function keys
in CW contests, but replaced it with a Mortty,
which emulates the WinKey protocol from
a USB port on the computer. There are
a variety of single transistor keying interfaces
described on the web if you search a bit.

Others may recall if one can share the K3s serial port
for both rig control and CW keying without
a separate interface circuit - I remember seeing
various discussions on this issue years ago,
but can't retrieve them now.

[Elecraft] Muting the K2

2023-01-20 Thread Ray Spreadbury via Elecraft
Thanks Fred for the suggestion of using a Dow-Key relay, but they seem to be
unavailable in UK/Europe except on Ebay secondhand for $120 or more & those
are mostly 24V rather than 12V.

Are there any alternatives

Re: [Elecraft] K4 recommendation - wait for HD or no?

2023-01-20 Thread Ed Cole

On the subject of two radios operating in close proximity:

I have a K3/10 (12w version) that I use with a KXPA-100 on 6m or HF.

I have noted the noise level of the K3 S-meter rise about one s-unit
when I transmit on 2m with the IC-9700 + 100w TE amplifier into a
high-gain 2m vertical about 100-foot away from the 3-element 6m yagi.
K3 is on 50.125 in SSB mode, but both radios physically on the same table.

I've not been overly concerned, as trying to receive 6m while
transmitting on 2m is not a normal operating situation for me.

K3 is updated with latest Synthesizers (two).

I suppose cable radiation could be the cause vs antenna-antenna pickup.
Also have not tested IC-9700 harmonic output. Testing with K3 connected
to my 500w Bird term probably would reveal this.

Anyway thought it curious behavior for the K3 (SN 4340).

73, Ed - KL7UW
may be sort-term situation as the shack will be moved into a new
location in a couple months with new cables and grounding.

[Elecraft] KX3 filters oscillating issue

2023-01-20 Thread Terry Griffey via Elecraft
I have a fully loaded KX3 with the roofing filter. With the AF set to 12, the
RF set to 0 and the monitor level at 19, when I start closing the filter (APF
OFF) it begins to oscillate at bandwidth 1.8k until it gets down to .05k and
stops. This happens on every band. With (APF ON) the oscillation begins at
1.8k but changes timbre as the filter is closed to .05k but never stops. This
has been happening since I got the transceiver back from service a few months
ago. Is this a setting of some kind that got reset during service? Is there
something I need to change? Thanks for your input. 73!

[Elecraft] Keying the K3s

2023-01-20 Thread Dave Sublette
Good morning,

I have two questions. I plan to operate a contest next weekend in the QRP
mode. Is there any added danger for operating the K3s at the 5 watt level
for the contest?

The other question is about keying CW with the computer. I have N1MM
working. It reads the frequency and controls the K3s. But, how may I use
the CW feature of N1MM to send CW? I know folks use devices like the
WinKeyer, but I don't have one of those. I will consult the N1MM to see if
there are any instructions. But my overriding concern is, are there any
issues that make using a WinKeyer better than keying the K3s directly
through the USB control of the interface?

Thanks for any help.

73,

Dave, K4TO
