[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2023-05-21 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

I know I lost at least one of you on 20 meters; the band just went
away on me.  Forty meters was also challenging. Thunderstorms caused
loud QRN crashes.  QSB was lower than it had been on 20 meters.  There
it varied from moderate and slow to light and fast.  I think the
lightning crashes of static were the most difficult to ignore.  Walking
outside afterward was soothing.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6XK - Roy - IA

  On 7047.5 kHz at z:

WM5F - Dwight - ID

N7TB - Terry - OR

K6PJV - Dale - CA

   Until next week 73,

[Elecraft] FS, two Elecraft rigs, Ks and KX2

2023-05-21 Thread Douglas Hudson
Medical issues suggest it would be wise for me to reduce my inventory of ham
related items I have collected over the past 63 years. I have the following
for sale:

K2/10, SN 6280 with the following accessories and options,

KNB2, K6OXV, KAF2, KBT2, KDSP2, KSB2, and KAT2. The KBT2 battery is not
included as it no longer holds a charge and is heavy to the point it may cause
physical damage in shipping. The battery can be found on the internet.
This unit was recently submitted to Dave Wallaghen with a request to check the
statis and function of all options and accessories, do a complete alignment,
and overall function test. Dave did a wonderful job, and the unit is 100%
operational.
Included is literature and spare/old parts for the options, plus the assembly,
alignment, and owner's manuals. Photos are available along with Dave
Wallaghan's report. Asking $950 plus shipping from the Seattle area.

KX2-F, SN 1888, Shack-In A- Box the following options,
KXAT2, KXIO2, KXBC2, KXBT2, KX2GNDPLUG, MH3, CS40 (Small Lowepro case), KXPD2,
KXUSB, KXIO2, and Gem Products extended side plates with Lexan cover.
This unit is 100% operational.

I also have the following which I would like to sell with the KX2 as a complete
package,

A brand new, never used Elecraft AX1 antenna with associated bipod, 90 degree
BNC connector, and counterpoise.
A new, never used Buddipole-Mini antenna package.
An older Heil Pro-Set headset which has never been used.

All of these products come from a childless, no smoking home, and are in new
condition. The Elecraft rigs have no marks, or blemishes, and are 100%
operational. The two antennas are also new and 100%.
I would like to sell the KX2 as a complete set with the two antennas and
headset. Asking $1,600 for the package.

Photos of all of these items are available upon request. These items are also
listed for sale on another venue.

Please inquire via direct e-mail.

13 seconds of transmit, 17 seconds of receive = 43% duty cycle.

I use (rarely) less than 100 watts, all the way up to band legal limit.
With a K3, don't worry about it. IF the cooling become inadequate due
to local environment, it'll reduce output to protect itself.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rotary encoder

2023-05-21 Thread evert
Hello Kimo and others,

Thank you all for your the answers.

I think Ramon (wd4x) came up with the right ones.

I checked the size and they are the same.

Found them at Mouser for € 1,71 (abt $ 1,70) each, ordered them and they will
be delivered Tuesday. So that’s fast.

I will replace them all as they are in a nasty place (most probably have to
remove the LED board but will have to look into it carefully).

I am no expert on this radio. However, I notice that the part Evert is
referring to is not the same or type of encoder/part that David mentioned. I am
only going by the visual representation in the manual.

The E850239 is one of two identical rotary encoders used for VFO A and B. I
purchased a spare of that particular part. There is no part number listed in
the Assembly Manual for the HI / WIDTH control first mentioned. It appears that
part is one of several that are preinstalled on the E850242 Front Panel PCB
Assembly and is not normally available or installed as a separate kit part.

However, contacting the factory is advised if not already done.

1. They would be able to say whether it is advisable for that part to be
replaced in the field (granted, many people have the expertise and equipment to
do so).

2. They have been open to me and others with offering any parts (for sale) that
can be and/or in lieu of that, giving the OEM part they sourced themselves.
Those, in my case, were from Digi-key for which they provided their part number
purchased. Though not likely applicable in this case, one thing you might have
to investigate is whether the part Elecraft sourced is correct for small
quantity purchase and packaging format (not on a reel of SMD intended for
automated feeding and insertion). I"m injecting this though I don't know if
Elecraft does this. I think their contracted board assembly builders may.

The point is...ask the source. If you want me to phone them on your behalf I'd
be glad to do so (so no international phone call).

Good luck.

Google finds https://n5na.net/wp/replacing-elecraft-k3-push-button-encoders/
Also
https://groups.io/g/Elecraft-K3/topic/k3_rotary_encoder_replacement/74198899

You probably want to order enough to replace all four encoders at once.

NOTE, the VFO-A and VFO-B encoder, as well as the RIT encoder, are
*different types*.

If you qualify for minimum order size, then ordering directly at mouser
or digikey is simplest, at least for us behind the EU customs wall.

Be sure to include diodes to protect your KLPA when you put in an order.

Re: [Elecraft] CM 500 Ear Covers - Update

2023-05-21 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

A follow-up ...

Since I had two pairs of CM-500 that needed refurbishment
(my original pair - without any cushions - and my current
pair - that is starting to flake), I took a chance and
ordered cushions for the Koss QZPRO.

They arrived a couple weeks ago and appear to be a perfect
fit for the CM-500. I would guess they are the same as the
suggested UR-20 cushions (which are "Sold Out").

As the foam was also gone (original pair) or falling apart
(current pair), I started looking for a suitable replacement
as I did not want to do a cut up sock and double stick tape
as suggested in one You Tube video. I found these:

These are 90 mm round and I was able to simply tuck them
between the QZPRO cushions and the face of the CM-500
"speakers" after installing the new cushions. There was
no need to cut them down to fit the recesses of the CM-500
and hold them in place using double stick tape. The foam
is a bit thicker and softer than the original Yamaha (Koss).

Finally, and probably not necessary, I added cloth covers ...

Although I took a chance and got a spare set of the cushions and
foam disks for each of my CM-500s, I decided the extra protection
from sweat, etc. was probably worthwhile for the long term. I
went with black but a station with multiple operators could use
a different color for each operator.

All in all, replacing the cushions and adding new foam is quite
easy - no broken speaker wires if one is careful. Getting to
the three screws (Phillips #0) is easy once one learns where
they are (front and +/- 120 degrees). For $18 total per headset
for cushions ($5), foam disks ($9) and covers ($8 for 2 pair)
the cost is far less than an equivalent replacement headset
(the CM-500 is currently $60 on Amazon).

Unfortunately, the SB-40 ear cushions are "Sold Out" at Koss. The
QZPRRO headset ear cups appeared to be the same size/shape so I

ordered a couple pairs (both of my CM-500s need new cushions) and
they fit just fine:
The foam in both of my headsets has also deteriorated but the QZPRO
cushions do not come with replacement foam.  My next step is to find
a source for that foam.

For the benefit of others, the earphone cups of the CM-500 are
98.4 mm (3 7/8") x 93.6 (3 11/16") - a standard 100 or 105 mm
(round) headphone pad should work.  However, since the screws
holding the headphones together are located under the cushions and
the cushions are clamped between the face and cup of the headphones,
cushions with built in foam screens will not work.

The foam screens are 80 mm (3 1/8") x 60 mm (2 3/8") and are
fixed to the face of the headphone with double stick tape.  One
could probably use 98 x 93 mm foam and simply slide it between
the earpad and the face of the headphone after the earpad has
been replaced.

I managed to get the replacements on, but broke a wire. After four
breaks and three re-solderings, there wasn’t enough wire left to work
with, so I bought a new headset.

This guy just glued on the new ones, which might be a safer approach.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rotary encoder

2023-05-21 Thread David Pratt
Several years ago I had a problem with one of my K3 encoders and
obtained a replacement E850239 from Elecraft under warranty. However, I
noticed that the two halves of the encoder had started to separate. They
were held together by small aluminium rivets. By carefully removing the
rivets, one by one, and replacing them with small screws of a suitable
size the encoder could be repaired. If your problem is with the encoder
halves separating, Evert, that might be worth a try.
