Nearly 3 weeks ago I ordered a KXV3 and a couple of hardware upgrades for my K3. I paid using PayPal, accepting the USPS charge which was nearly half the cost of the actual order. When nothing was received for such a long time I obtained at the end of last week the tracking number from Elecraft Sales and was able to determine that the package had been stuck in customs for several days and had just been released. When nothing was delivered again today I used the tracking number again and was informed that they had attempted to deliver at 12:28 today. Except that my wife and I had been in all day and no-one had tried to deliver anything. I contacted Sales again to find out if they had given me the right tracking number, and eventually received a reply containing the details they had given for shipment. One vital line of the address (house number, street name) was missing, the phone number given bore only a 60% correlation with mine, and the email address was an old one with one letter missing so it wouldn't have worked even if it had still been available. I really don't know how much clearer I could make my order than to send it via PayPal which includes my confirmed shipping address as part of the standard email. Once upon a time you could order something from Elecraft and it was here in a few days. It seems to be becoming increasingly slow, expensive and error prone (last year I had to remind sales twice before they sent back-ordered items.) I'm afraid this is the last time I order anything from Elecraft. - Julian, G4ILO. Perhaps it's just a human condition! What I'd REALLY like to see is the actual xmit freq displayed on the top line (VFO A display line where the readout is a larger size). Then if you are split it would display VFO A freq (rx freq as it does normally) until you hit xmit and then would display VFO B freq (where you are xmitting) on that line - sort of flip-flop the data. When you quit xmitting, VFO A would again be displayed as usual and - if the text decode is turned on - the VFO B line would again display the decoded text. While I see the TX arrow on B it would be nice to see that you were actually transmitting on 305 on the main display. While in SPLIT mode where else -could- you be transmitting? Why would you need to be shown this information in a second place at the same time? In split mode could it be possible to display the 2nd VFO frequency and be able to change the vfo with the sub/rit knob. In split I can't recall ever needing to use the rit feature. You can change the VFO B frequency with the VFO B knob, either by turning the knob and reading the resulting change in the VFO B window or by tapping A/B to swap the VFO's to put yourself on the frequency of the calling station. I think this is what you want to do. SUB is a button and RIT is a knob. I don't follow what you're suggesting. I agree, I've never had occasion to either RIT or XIT in SPLIT ... or in any situation, for that matter ... but the results of a change to either are displayed in the respective window if either is enabled. Actually, I -never- use either RIT or XIT, but that's just a personal preference. It would be nice to have immediate control over both vfo's if possible. You do ... by turning each VFO's knob. I use my K3 often on 6 meters. I have no problem hearing stations on 6 meters. I can hear the noise increase when I connect my 4 element 6 meter beam to the radio. RE: [Elecraft] K3 and 6 meters
I cannot agree that the K3 is sub par on 6 meters. I also cannot dispute what Ron says. My Pro III cannot hear any better than my K3 on 6 meters. You must live in a very quite location and have a very good 746. Like I said before, at my QTH adding an external preamp would not improve weak signal performance for me. Are you sure your K3 is up to spec on 6 meters? Did you have the preamp on? Did you have Noise Reduction on. I know Noise Reduction can make very weak signals disappear on any band with my K3. I compared directly with an IC746. When we enjoyed a rare opening on 6 to JA earlier this year I was able to work a JA with the K3. Barely. And I say barely because the audio was cranked all the way up and I could just hear them. The next day I ran a line from the RX ant out to the IC 746 so I could switch between the rigs just by pushing the RX ANT switch on the K3. With the IC 746 I was able to hear signals that were not audible on the K3. Clear and simply the K3 was not up to the task. I did contact Elecraft about this and Wayne replied as he did just today (10/23) to the reflector with the same explanation. My point to him was no where is this deficiency on 6 noted in the K3 literature. I agree with those that already said that $149 for the preamp is steep for performance that should have been included in the rig. I think the K3 is a FANTASTIC rig for HF. But am disappointed I needed to spend even more money for equally good performance on 6. I bought the ARR preamp. I'd still buy the K3 and recommend it to others but everyone should be made aware of its lack of performance on 6. A basic TS570 has a V/M switch, you are either in VFO mode or Memory mode. In memory mode rotating the multi-function knob switches through memories, receiving on each as you switch, even changing bands. It doesn't rely on copying the contents to the VFO, prefixing them with a * or any other work arounds. The later TS480 works in the same manner. Short of bringing out a MK2 version of the K3's front panel, I guess you have painted yourself into a corner as there isn't a VFO/Mem switch on the K3. 73 Dave, G4AON === Julian, Dave, Tony: I'm not sure I understand what you're asking for. The K3 lets you designate any number of variable-length blocks of channelized frequency memories, then use VFO A to instantly hop among them. You can also do channel-hop scanning within one of these blocks. For example, I have memories 61-65 set up as a channel block for the five U.S. 60-m frequencies. From any band, I can simply recall one of these memories, and the VFO becomes a channel control, just as if the rig were crystal-controlled. Similarly, I have a block set up for 2-m repeaters, etc. Am I missing something? Why couldn't this be a configuration setting? The AB can be set like it is now (single tap and if needed a second tap)or a single tap would be an AB[all]. However, as a 6-meter operator, I vote for retaining the current behavior as-is, due to the common occurrence of split-mode (as opposed to split-frequency) QSOs. You could make the automatic behavior you desire be a configuration option -- SPLIT invokes AB[all] or something like that. I can see where an HF DXer would like it to work that way. However, for my purposes on VHF, I prefer to have all this stuff manually under my control, as it is now. Please don't do away with this more flexible capability altogether! Previously, a single tap of the A-B button copied frequency, mode and filter settings from VFO A to VFO B. Starting with 1.87, two taps are needed - the first to copy the frequency, and another to copy mode and filter settings. The result can be the same as in your case if I go split but forget to tap A-B twice. No rationale was given for the change, but from a ergonomics standpoint I never understood why the most common use case was complicated in this way. I went through all the cal and setup routines and all was perfect. I was turning my attention to the bands and was looking to snag a new country on cw. I noticed that the station was listening up in frequency so I engaged a split on VFO B and set the frequency and tried to call but no action out of my key. I looked at the display and discovered that I was no longer in QSK only VOX so I hit the QSK button and VFO B came back and said N/A in the screen! I tried several times to engage QSK but no way was I going to get the K3 to key. Going back to XIT I was able to snag that guy but here is where it gets interesting. I called Elecraft and asked what was going on and Scott had no Idea but asked me what version of manual I had and discovered that I had an old version C that was over a year old! I downloaded the newest version of the manual and much to my surprise there was a note that is not in the earlier version about B SET that indicated it could be set up in a different mode! Sure enough that VFO had been set up for SSB and that was why I could not key the radio. Why on earth if you are in CW on VFO A and press split would you ever expect that VFO B would ever default to anything but CW on VFO B!!! This in my opinion is completely illogical. Can anyone out there give me an explanation why I should be wrong on this account? I might have been upset if I didn't go back to XIT to solve the problem but I can just see in a contest situation where someone was unaware of this that sparks wouldn't fly. What say you guys! If this also copied VFO A's filter and preamp settings (etc.) to VFO B, you'd have to set them up all over again. But I'll be happy to sit back and listen to arguments pro and con. If it looks like a lot of operators would prefer to copy everything with one tap, I could add a menu entry. RE: [Elecraft] K3 and StepIR/Icom PW-1
I have done this. I use a micro Keyer II that has a CI-V port that emulates an Icom transceiver to control the PW-1. The micro Keyer II connects to the K3 and the CI-V jack on the micro Keyer II connects to the Steppir and PW-1 using a Y cable. With the new Steppir cable from Microham, the PW-1 would still connect to the CI-V jack but the Steppir would connect to the iLink jack on the micro Keyer II. In this configuration, the micro Keyer II only sends the transmit frequency to the Steppir controller (prevents the wide split problem), in PTT mode the micro Keyer II inhibits transmit when the Steppir motors are running and in VOX mode the micro Keyer II leaves the PW-1 in standby when the Steppir motors are running. However, it is apparent to me with the numerous issues with NR and DSP that more needs to be done before K3 software products are released for general use. While I have no aversion to software upgrades, one does not want to trade one set of problems for others. This, unfortunately, appears to be happening more and more as the software becomes more extensive in capabilities. I don't know if Elecraft utilizes such techniques, but independent verification and validation (IVV) of software has proven time and time again to work. One cannot expect a software developer to adequately test his work. Independent testing by a third party against approved criteria catches many bugs and problems developers fail to see. And unless one has a rigorous, structured software testing effort, problems such as those with DSP and NR will come back and bite you every time. Having software tested by the developer often leads to the old problem of two steps forward and one in reverse with software releases. I make the suggestion that more time be spent proofing firmware and DSP upgrades and for Elecraft to employ software IVV. Hey gang, Just spent 4 hours assembling K3 s/n 1318 and all went well except for one slight but potentially serious hardware problem. When installing the bottom heat sink cover over the LPA I noticed that the required 4-40 x 1/4 screws bottomed out in the standoffs under the TO-220 LPA transistors before they would compress the cover to the transistors (and yes I can measure screw lengths). This will leave a gap between the transistor and the heatsink and not provide proper heat sinking! It is strange to note that one of the Manual Errata changes was to point out that the heat sink cover was slightly thicker than the other bottom cover. Wonder if this part has changed? Any way, I added 3 #4 stainless steel flat washers under the screw heads and that allows the screws to fully compress the heat sink against the transistors. For a belts and suspenders fix I also added a dab of heat sink compound to the transistors as well. I did not check the screws coming from the top side of t! ! he LPA assy to see if the factory may have used the wrong/longer screws taking up extra standoff threads. A #4 split washer could have also been left off of this top side screw and create the same issue or tol. stack up of the parts? We are now getting ready our equipment for the coming contest season. So far so good, we are quite happy with the K3 which is really a great radio. There is only one detail I would like to have your opinion about. From everywhere outside US, we are used to operate split on 40 (and sometimes on 80 as well), transmitting and also sometimes listening in the European segment as well (you know, listening 7205 and my frequency, for example). With our Kenwood radios, we had an external toggle switch located just near the computer keyboard. This switch was connected to the ACC3 connector (front panel remote) of the TS-850 in order to remotely command the TF-SET button. That way, we were able to easely choose which of the TX or RX frequency to listen. Using such an external switch, it was not necessary to hold the finger on the TF-SET button and this was very confortable. The REV button of the K3 is relatively similar to the TS-850's TF-SET one, except that it is not possible to transmit when this switch is pressed. It means that the op must think to release the REV button before any transmission (and to press it right after the end of the transmission if he need to listen again his TX frequency). On the other hand, it is necessary to hold the finger on that button which is not confortable, especially when operating SOAB. I wonder if someone around got a way to deal with that problem. Of course, a the possible solution would be to get the sub-receiver... which we didn't included in our order! An easy way would be to have a new entry in the menu in order to modify the behaviour of the REV button in that manner: a single tap on the REV button will focus the headphones to the TX frequency. Another single tap on the REV button will focus back the headphone to the split frequency (normal split operation). I wonder if that would be possible to implement such a behaviour in the next firmware. Essentially the same thing, but much higher quality. They will mate with the Anderson line so no problem there. A lot of people have complained at how easily the powerpoles come apart. I did some testing and found that it takes about 3 lbs of force to pull two powerpoles apart, while it takes 8 lbs for the AMP connectors. With an AMP mated to Anderson, it takes 6 lbs. With the AMP connectors, it takes considerably more force to mate them and there is a distinct snap/click sound when they go together. The pins are thicker and they have wings on them so they don't flop around in the housing like the Anderson ones do. Also, they don't require a roll pin to lock them together. There is a little tab on the housing that locks one half of the connector to the other. They do cost more but your getting a higher quality product in my opinion. Anyway, for those of you that have an issue with the way Anderson's lock together, you might want to give these a try. Bias is on pin 6. Bob Serwy - N9RS I see it and it states this: The K3 8-pin microphone connector is wired the same as the K2 using the Kenwood pin-out. The pin-out may be close to Kenwood's, but it is not the same. I literally took it to mean that the K3 was pin-for-pin compatible with Kenwood's standard. And that's fine for non-condenser Kenwood mics where external powering isn't required. I had been scratching my head as to why my electret mic's output was running so low, even when the K3's high-gain pre-amp setting was selected. I simply moved my electret-condenser mic from a Kenwood TS-870 to the K3 thinking I was all set. To prevent confusion in the future, I recommend the inclusion of a disclaimer in the literature in which it states the two types are not 100% compatible. At the same time, I should have conducted my own due-diligence and compared pin-for-pin just to be sure. That in Europe at least includes 6m and up. There is also limited activity at 10m. The K3 is an excellent transverter driver and that is the reason many of us bought one. Having FM capabilities is necessary for DXing at VHF and above.
