[Elecraft] K2 warping
I just hate the new Verizon email format. Here I go again! My K2 has developed a warping issue. Recently completed and finally totally assembled the unit does not set flat on the desk or stand. It wobbles. I have loosened the 3d connector screws, set heavy books on the rig on a marble top table and then re-tightened the screws. The rig then sits flat with no wobble. The next morning the warp is back. Has anyone had this issue? Thanks in advance for your input. 73 Daniel Grizzard Extra Class af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] kat2 question
Hello all, I have completed the assembly of my kat2 and am at the testing phase. The question is: I hear relay clicking when going thru the display settings for L0-L8, C0-C8, N1 N2, but NOT for CALn,CALP, CALS, AUTO, ALT and POUT. Is this normal? Thanks in advance 73 Dan Daniel Grizzard Extra Class af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] kat 2 t1 txfmr
I have the T1 transformer wound and installed on the Kat2 board and have a question of the 1 turn winding. Cut and stripped as directed the wire dies not pull down tight against the T1. There is a LOT of air between the wire and torroid. Is this correct in that the wire does not touch the torroid? 73 Dan Daniel Grizzard Extra Class af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] kat2
Hello all, I just started the inventory of parts for my kat2 and all is going well until I got to the 102 caps. For the life of me I cannot determine the two smaller ones! I have lined them up with a ruler on a marble top table and looked at them from all angles. All 26 appear to be the same size. Any suggestions? Secondly, thetwo trimmer potentiometers are listed at 100k but 150k was shipped. A problem? 73 all Dan Daniel Grizzard Extra Class af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] kat2 or ssb module first?
I have my K2 up and running nicely now for several months and now want to build and install my ssb and automatic tuner modules. Any suggestions which to do first? I don't want to have to remove one to install the other. 73 Dan Daniel Grizzard Extra Class af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 transmitter problem
Hello all. I have gotten my K2 assembled and stated aligning the filters using Spectogram and the VFO stopped working. I reworked any suspicious solder joints to no avail. I discovered with the help of a friend with a scope that the encoder had failed. I replaced the encoder and discovered I have no power out on any band at all. I get HIGH CURRENT every time I hit tune and only .4 watts out on the meter. I ran a ground check on Q19 and the results are G= 96.7 K ohms, S=240.8 ohms, and D=276.2 ohms. I reworked the solder on R20 and RFC14 with no effect. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. 73 Daniel Grizzard Extra Class af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] k2 transmitt problem
Hello all, I have finally gotten to the final stretch of construction and have hit another snag. I had gotten the power out on all bands correct and was starting to align the filters when the VFO went out. I reworked the solder joints looking suspect on all 3 boards with no good results. I did discover the encoder had gone bad. I replaced it, aligned the filters using Spectrogram and then discovered I had NO power output on any bands! I get a HIGH CURRENT warning then .4-.5 on the display when tuning. Following the page 17 rf board vdc voltage chart all went well until I got to Q18 and Q19. Q18 G voltage rated -1.0= actual -.001 S was OK=D rated 6.3= actual 8.3. Q19 G rated 0.0= actual -.4==S rated 0.8=actual 1.7==D was ok at 8.0 vdc. Q20 checked out ok. Here I stopped and asking for suggestions. Thanks in advance. Dan af4lb NOTE==Q5 needed to be checked with the bottom cover off in transmit so I did not do it. Didn't want to risk frying the finals again. I do have 13.4 vdc on the case in transmit and receive. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 VFO problems
Hello all, I have finally gotten my K2 up and running on all bands. What started happening during the final assembly IE speaker installation and top install, is that I cannot change frequencies after a short warmup, and sometimes from a cold startup. Sometimes spinning the VFO knob made it work for a short time. I had no problem like this during my search for low power out on 80 and 15 meters. (I found I had reversed two capacitors on those two bands.) I suspect a cold solder joint somewhere on the front panel board. Any other location suggestions are surely welcomed. I did remove and inspect the front panel board and reworked those joints looking suspicious but it did not help. Thanks in advance for your input. 73 Dan af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K2 audio out
Hello all, I have recently completed my K2 alignment and finished assembling the top cover and installing it. I find I have very low audio from my speaker and must be within a foot or so to hear it. Both the front and rear speaker jacks have plenty volume using earphones. [Elecraft] K2 PA replacement kit
Hello all, I just got my PA transistor replacement kit and have a couple of items I want to clarify: 1) the 2n222a transistors I assume are for Q11 and Q13 2) the resistor coded brown-green-gold is for R50 in the Q6 driver circuit. Only one in the entire rig. 3) does both sections of the bottom need to be on for testing or just the front half? 4) when adjusting the transmit power is the maximum power out limited to 2 watts, 5 watts, 10 watts respectively at the 2 watt, 5 watt, 10 watt test level? Again, I just wanted to clarify these items before I power up the rig again. I really do not want to fry my new parts! 73 Dan af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Fw: K2 alignment problems test
- Original Message - From: af...@verizon.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net ; af...@verizon.net Sent: Thursday, April 30, 2009 11:57 PM Subject: Fwd: K2 alignment problems Forwarded message From: af...@verizon.net Date: Apr 29, 2009 Subject: K2 alignment problems To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net After 3 years I have finally gotten to complete the construction of kit # 5233. The first 2 phases I got completed with only a couple of glitches that with your help I got corrected. I completed istalling the parts for phase 3 and started the alignment section as per the manual. I set power to 2 watts and started to tune L1 and L2 to peak the transmitter but to no avail. Further checks per the troubleshooting guides found the diode and resistors in the first few steps were ok. I did not have any signal at r50 using the rf probe. I then went back to checks from phase 1 and was ok until I got to the tone freq and pitch test. I now have NO tone or pitch control and no tone. The display shows the correct values as when I first did them during the construction but no tone is present. I did notice when I hit edit to activate the tone the white noisewent away. Rotating the vfo I can hear faint clicks in the head sets but no tone. I then discovered the birdy tone at 7000 is now very faint and goes away totally when I vary the vfo. I can get it back when I hit edit. Further checks of the transmit section of the rf board finds none of the values listed for the U chips are correct. Mostly where voltage is indicated on the different pins I have either no voltage or double voltage! So far no overheating or smoke is present. Male logic indicate that the problem is in section 3. I have double checked parts placements, filter and transformer windings and can not detect any solder bridges. Thus two questions. 1) suggestions as to where to start from her and 2) where can I obtain a picture of the front and back of the rf board without any components installed. That would make bridge location a little easier for those close pads that are easily bridged. Holding the board up to a strong light helps but a picture is worth a thousand words or light sightings. Thanks in advance.
