Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 and ICOM IC-705

2021-01-26 Thread David Patino
Will there be in changes needed to the T1 itself? I have one on back order.
If it'll need any changes I'd rather wait for it to be updated before I get
it.

Also, any update on their status? Website still says ESD 1/25.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 rig control using fldigi

2015-06-21 Thread David Patino
Hey Michael,

Yes Fldigi can control the KX3.

In Fldigi go to Configure, Rig Control.
Click on the Hamlib tab
In the Rig: drop down, select Elecraft K3/KX3 (Beta)
then in Device: select the port that is connected to the KX3 (not the signalink)
Make sure the baud rate is set correctly. If you're not sure what it is you can
launch the Elecraft utility first and it will auto-detect the baud rate.
Click the 'Initialize' button, and then save and close. Should be good to go.

I am a new user of the KX3. I connected the KX3's usb port directly to my
computer's usb, and also connected the KX3's mic and phone ports to a
SignaLink-USB which, in turn, was connected to a second usb port of my
computer. My computer has fldigi on it.

I am able to receive and transmit psk31 and cw, but the fldigi does not
control the frequency of the KX3. When I first open fldigi, it's frequency
display reads the same frequency as the KX3, but if I change the frequency
of either the KX3 or fldigi, it does not affect the other.

Can anyone tell me if I can control the KX3's frequency with fldigi and, if
so, how?

[Elecraft] PX3 - Remove artifact from I/Q demodulation?

2015-06-07 Thread David Patino
Howdy All,

So on my PX3 I'm seeing the issue listed in the manual as Dip in Spectral
Response Close to VFO Frequency. Described as:

I/Q demodulation at baseband (used by the PX3 and many SDR applications) may
introduce small, very narrow-band amplitude variations in the response close to
the carrier. This effect varies with operating mode and usually has no effect
on operation. In CW mode the artifact can be moved by switching to CW reverse
mode (ALT switch on KX3). Setting RX Shift to 8.0 rather than NOR in the KX3
menu may also vary to location of the artifact.

Here's a screen cap of my PX3 with span set to just 2kHz in CW mode. The dip is
600hz above the VFO freq (CW pitch is set to 600Hz).

This exaggerates the issue but it's visible at any spans at and below 50khz.

http://i.imgur.com/p1i29Ul.jpg

Other than just moving it as the manual suggests, anyone know of any way to
decrease the dip, or remove it entirely?

Re: [Elecraft] Apartment/condo antenna

2014-05-25 Thread David Patino
I have a MFJ 1622 and am on a 2nd floor apartment. It actually works
quite well clamped to my balcony railing, as long as the counterpoise is
run out correctly. That's actually the biggest problem with my area.
It's a bit hard to hide the counterpoise since it has to go down to the
ground first and vegetation around here is sparse. I've tried it in
vertical position inside my balcony, and while I was still able to make
some contacts on HT65, it was better with it clamped to the railing and
sticking out.

The MFJ might be a bit big to pass off as a flag pole though. The coil
portion is about as big around as a soda can and with the whip extended
the total length is around 70 long.

I've heard good things about the MFJ Super Hi-Q loop antennas.. they can
be mounted vertically inside the balcony area. They are bit pricey
compared to the 1622 though.

[Elecraft] Reading 'extended' data from menus via serial

2014-05-20 Thread David Patino

Howdy,

So some of the menu options have a basic setting, ie on/off, but then an
extended setting as well. For example the Alarm menu:

MN000;
When read with MP; it will only report if the alarm is on or not (Bit 4
on / off)
you can turn it on or off by changing that bit with MP, and you can
change the hours/minutes setting (after sending the right SWT command)
using UP; or DN;, but is there any way to read what time the alarm is
set to?

The programming reference says (In some cases, more than one value can
be accessed for a given menu entry via the numeric keys;

see menu listing in manual.)

All the manual says for the alarm menu is:
Num 1 turns the alarm on/off
Num 2 select hours
Num 3 selects minutes

None of these change what is reported by MP though and I can't seem to
find anything else in the manual.
Anyone know if it's possible to read that value? TX ESSB is another one.
MP turns it on/off, but not sure how to read the bandwidth setting.

Re: [Elecraft] Programmers Reference Questions

I've found a solution with python... The problem was getting it to not
interpret '\xB2' as an escape sequence, so I just re-encode it with string
escapes, then do a string replacement:

 source = 'DS@1\xB200\xB325\x80\x90'
 source2 = source.encode('string-escape').replace(r'\xb', '.')
 freq = source2[2:12].replace('@','').zfill(10)
 freq
'01.200.325'

Thanks for all the replies!

It looks like the digits are in plain ASCII, as suggested by the note that

This would be clearer if each byte of the response is presented on its own

[Elecraft] Programmers Reference Questions

2014-05-15 Thread David Patino
So I'm writing my own little rig control / configuration utility for the KX3.
But had a question on the DS command.

The programmer's reference manual states this about the text data:

TEXT and decimal point data: This field contains 8 bytes, with values 0x30 -
0xFF (hex). The first byte is the left-most displayed character. Bit 7 (MSB) of
each byte indicates whether the decimal point to the left of each character is
on (1) or off (0).

But the responses I'm seeing from the KX3 don't appear to follow this layout.
Given an active frequency of 1.200.325 the response is:

DS@1\xB200\xB325\x80\x90;

The appears to be the active frequency in plain text, replacing spaces with @'s
and .'s with \xB, only the last two entries for icon data and extended data are
8-bit bytes expressed in hex. In this case only my ATU icon was on, so the
first one only has bit 7 on, and the second one has bit 7 and bit 4 on.

Given how those last two bytes are expressed and the text in the programmers
reference, I'd expect the frequency to be 8 bytes (8 bits each) expressed in
hex like:

DS@\x01\x82\x00\x00\x83\x02\x05
(except for the space being a @ at the beginning)

Has the output changed since the last revision of the manual, or am I just
reading it wrong? I'm using Revision E11 dated Oct 24, 2013 of the reference.

The only real issue I'm having with the actual output it is that I'm using
Python, and it considers '\xB' to be an escape sequence for superscript. I'm on
a quest to find a solution to prevent python from interpreting that response
from the kx3. Currently I just poll the frequency directly with the IF command.

Second question, It's not documented in the reference, but is there any way to
grab the complete configuration of the KX3 without manually setting the menu to
an item (MN) then polling it's contents (MP)? I assume there is since the
official KX3 utility appears to be able to grab the complete config without
having to manually go through the menus. Just not sure if this is exposed to
regular people over the serial port, or only something the official utility can
do.

[Elecraft] KX3 - EEINIT - Calibration Information

2014-05-10 Thread David Patino

Does performing an EEINIT on the KX3 erase calibration information, mainly the
Receive Sideband calibration for use with the roofing filter?

In the documentation it recommends writing down the settings when you do it
yourself for future reference, but by any chance does the factory keep records
of these when they do the calibration on assembled units?

Re: [Elecraft] Could this operate on a motorcycle?

2014-05-04 Thread David Patino

I would shy away from putting a KX3 on a motorcycle for several reasons:

Heat from direct sunlight
Heat from higher ambient temperature on the road
Possible exposure to water / moisture
Vibration (Even on a 6 cylinder Goldwing this can be an issue)
Attempting to operate the relatively small buttons with gloves on
Attention required to operate the (KX3 or any HF rig) would be better spent not
getting squished by cagers

I would apply the same to almost any HF rig, though if one had a remote
faceplate allowing you to secure the main unit in a trunk to protect from
elements / vibration / direct sunlight, it could be possible, though probably
still not recommended.

However I have used 2m/440 on my bikes quite successfully. These typically
require much less attention to operate, no ATU, no minute tuning to get a
signal. I usually just us my Kenwood F6a HT on a RAM mount interfaced with a
helmet headset from RiderComm.
My father uses his Kenwood 710 with a Kennedy system to interface it to the
stock comms system on his Goldwing.

I also have a Yaesu FTM-10R (discontinued now), which was designed for
'motorsports'. I just haven't actually put it on a bike yet. It's remote head
wire is what I consider 'backwards'. You disconnect it from the main unit and
have a 10'+ wire still attached to the head. Makes it a bit impractical since
you can't easily remove the head unit from your bike. I assume they did this as
the head unit is waterproof, and having a connector up there would defeat that.

As many have mentioned, if this is just shorter range communications, I'd go
for one of the baofeng radios and a helmet headset (with remote PTT). Depending
on the bike you could consider a nicer unit like the kenwood 710 which would
also give you APRS capability.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Could this operate on a motorcycle?

You might get a few ideas by looking here:
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/Rev-B1-1.6-KX3-Mobile-Owners.pdf

There are ideas for mounts, power options, antennas, etc. The guide
is really for four-wheel vehicles, but some of the concepts may apply
to your BMW two-wheel installation.

On the KX3's manual page
(http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#KX3), you'll also
find a reference to http://www.k0bg.com/ . I believe the web site
also contains a number of articles on mobile installation and
operation, but might be less specific to the KX3.

Hello all, I just passed my Tech license and I am looking for a mobile
station to mount on my motorcycle (BMW F700GS)

I spoke with my Uncle Chuck Wood, WD6APP in San Diego, and he praised the
KX3 as radio, said buy one for the house, but thought it was not suitable
for a motorcycle.

His advice gives me pause as to if this is a suitable use for the radio, but
wanted to get the opinion of someone who has maybe mounted this unit on a
motorcycle and has personal experience.

I plan to mount it inside a Ram Mount Large Box, which is water resistant,
and then on to the handlebars, which are on anti-vibration mounts. It still
vibrates, but not as much as a straight connection.

I would have about 1/2 inch on all sides to put some anti vibration
standoffs, to isolate it some more.

Also, how forgiving is the unit of voltage? The CANBUS on the BMW does a
great job of regulating the voltage, but there is still going to be some
variation. Thinking of using an external battery, charge the battery off the
bike if needed, just to stabilize the power supply.

In case you were wondering what I would do with it... most of the road
captains are HAMs too, so we are using FRS at the moment, but want to move
to 6m/2m operations for co-ordinating rider leader/wingman/tailgunners
actions during riders. We have up to 4 groups of 15 per ride, covering 150
to 300+ miles per ride.
All day operation is a requirement, not a lot of chatter, maybe 15:1 rx/tx
ratio at max.
