Re: [Elecraft] Split operation - display of Transmit frequency on keydown
I have been a K3 user for a few years. The one event that has always bugged me is that it seems way too easy to unknowingly have the rig drop out of SPLIT, with the result that I have made far too many transmissions (unwittingly) on the DX calling frequency rather than where the frequency of VFO B is indicating, and where the cursor on the P3 is showing. Yes, I know about the yellow LED and the tiny down indicator and the small (SPLT) that should be illuminated. However, many of my previous rigs have always had what I considered to be a superb feature, the flipping of the frequency readouts, a very visible and noticeable change that can be picked up with even peripheral vision if looking somewhat away from the actual readout. I have a single receiver in my K3, and naturally I quite often use the REV button to check out the pileup. Notice how easily the display flips. I really wish the display would do exactly that when PTT is asserted, so it would clearly indicate that I really am still operating split. I hope this could become a user option in the near future. Doug VE3VS Wayne said Or, we could replace the *entire* VFO A display with the word SPLIT during key-down. This would be even more obvious, and it wouldn't mess up the VFO B display. VFO B is what you care about during split TX. ...that too would be a very obvious indicator that the rig is actually doing what we wanted it to do. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Split-operation-display-of-Transmit-frequency-on-keydown-tp7598758p7598836.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] A way to show both SPLIT and NON-SPLIT warnings
Wayne says I think the chance of success with this change is pretty high, precisely because you *won't* have to be looking at the radio. A complete rewrite of the VFO A or B display on key-down is going to be very noticeable even with peripheral vision. Wayne N6KR I say, thanks again for listening to a situation which confronts some of us. I consider myself to be a serious and conscientious operator, and have been a ham radio operator for more than fifty-five years. In the situation we are discussing, I know that I have already been listening to the DX station and I have properly set up the radio, using macros, for SPLIT operation. And almost always, things go well. Once in a while, I may, for a moment, change frequency to look at a spot on the DX cluster, and then return to my original frequency/band. It is at this point where I may have inadvertently dropped out of the SPLIT setup, and have missed the existing clues to right the situation. Perhaps it is the location of the cursor on the P3, indicating that I am up the band with VFO B, that trips me up for a moment. It is when a situation like this occurs that I would certainly appreciate an in-your-face reminder that lets me realize very quickly that I have lost my original SPLIT setting. Certainly you should maintain the interface that already exists, and make additional choices optional, but I assure you that I would like to be one to test-drive your recent suggestion. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 Question
On page 23 of my KPA500 assembly manual, relating to the mounting of the rectifier board, it is clear that thermal insulators must isolate the rectifiers from the chassis, and also, that insulating shoulder washers must be installed in the four places that you mention as your concern. The next step, using a DMMeter, checks to determine that there are no shorts between the metal tabs of each rectifier and the bare metal of the Z-bracket. Undoubtedly, you have already discovered this information in the diagram associated with this part of the assmbly procedure. ( See figure 29 ) Doug, VE3VS . I'm assembling a KPA-500 that I received today and I'm at the step where I mount the Rectifier bd to the Z-bracket. It looks like the 4 holes for mounting the rectifiers should be threaded for 4-40 screws but mine has about 1/8 holes. There is no mention of using a screw and nut to mount them and there is none provided. I wonder if anyone else has run into this problem Gary W0GHZ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA-500-Question-tp7585505p7585511.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Need volunteers to try an even better version of KAT500 firmware (rev. 1.63) -- more accurate initial tunes
Installed the new KAT500 beta rev. 1.63. Erased all memories for my 80 metres broadband dipole. Was able to get 1.0 to 1 or 1.1 to 1 with training every 20 Kcs across the entire band. Some intervals did not even try a long tuning cycle, just a couple of clicks and done, others required a couple of seconds or so. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?
Hi Glenn, I started using PSK31 many, many years ago, when it was first introduced by a ham in the UK. It was made very clear to operators that minimum power should always be used for a QSO. It was suggested that more than 10 watts was excessive. As mentioned in one of the other replies, many transmissions can fall within the receiver passband when using this mode. If you, or anyone else uses much higher power, that strongest signal will take over the passband on most receivers, spoiling other QSOs that are going on at the time. I have noticed over the past five years or more there has been a steady increase in the power being used by thoughtless or unknowing operators. As a result of this power creep, I have drifted away from a mode that I once thoroughly enjoyed. With your KX3, you should not normally need an amp to use PSK31. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 remote transmitting

Re: [Elecraft] Using KAT500 With Antenna Switch
You might consider placing a simple two-port antenna switch in your shack, with two short jumpers to port one and port two on the KAT500. Then when you change from your dipole to the other antenna, it would take only a moment to set the feeline switch appropriately, and also select the required port of the KAT500. Once tuned initially for each antenna on its own port, a longer re-tuning should not be needed. 73, Doug - VE3VS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Using-KAT500-With-Antenna-Switch-tp7569164p7569165.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [KAT500] Christmas gift
The waiting is over. Hurrah!! Placed my order on the Saturday of Dayton Hamvention. Received notice of delivery on Dec. 7th - arrived via rural postal delivery earlier today ( 17th). Seems to have spent some time at Canada Customs before getting into our postal system. This is a gift for my wife (VE3HQH) who is a bit uncomfortable with the manual tuner in our station ( but I plan to use it too !! ) Assembly was smooth and straightforward. I did need one of the small split washers from the bag of extra hardware. I'm sure glad I kept some of my old Heathkit nut-starters - it made the task of mounting the coaxial connectors a breeze. Preliminary tests with K3 / KPA500 combo have gone well. Serial 321 seems to be behaving exactly as promised. Still plan to update the amp and tuner to the 1.18 beta software. I also don't really mind, from time to time, reading posts about equipment that I don't have in my station. However, now that we are beginning to see the beginnings of several postings relating to the KAT500, I suggest to the powers that be that they might consider either ( 1 ) including the [KAT500] postings within [QRO] or ( 2 ) initiating a new [KAT500] sub-category to help with the organization of these postings.
