Re: [Elecraft] Data transmission on 30 meters with PX3 problem
Hi Gwen, Still sounds like RF getting in somewhere. That kind of antenna is guaranteed to bring common mode current into the shack. If you have a dummy load I would connect it directly to the output of the radio and see if the problem still occurs. 73, Gary K9GS Original message From: Gwen Patton Date: 9/1/18 10:00 PM (GMT-06:00) To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Data transmission on 30 meters with PX3 problem This happens very rarely for me EXCEPT for 30 meters. Then it happens so much, it makes data modes (CW, RTTY, PSK) useless. I'm using a wired USB keyboard connected to the PX3. If I'm on 30 meters, and I use the ATU to match the antenna, transmitting any data mode causes extra, spurious characters to be added onto the end of the keyboard input buffer. In some circumstances, it starts appending additional messages stored in message slots mapped to function keys. Usually it's just a few characters -- a couple of numbers, a few alphas -- that get transmitted at the end of my transmission. In less frequent cases, the transmission doesn't stop, as new characters are being shoved into the keyboard buffer faster than they can be transmitted. Pressing backspace to erase these characters works very seldom, though it can help, marginally. In very rare cases, it seems scan codes for function keys are getting shoved into the keyboard buffer, which appends those message slot contents to the end. I usually wind up hitting ESC to stop the transmission, because it's running wild. RF power isn't a determinant. I can run power down to less than a watt and it still happens. I tried wrapping a big ferrite toroid (T200-2) with the keyboard cable just before the PX3 keyboard port, but it doesn't appear to help. I've searched for solutions online and in both the PX3 and KX3 manuals. The antenna is a half-length "W3EDP Jr." end-fed antenna with an LDG RU-4:1 unun, run from my front porch to a tree, about 15' up at the porch end, and about 25' up at the far end. This is the antenna I'm using: https://thewakesileave.wordpress.com/2016/08/15/a-42-portable-multiband-hf-antenna-with-no-wire-on-the-ground-the-w3edp-jr/ Has anyone else had this problem, or can you suggest something I might set differently in a menu option? I've gone through about everything I can think of, including changing the position of the coax, the aforementioned choke on the keyboard cable, et. al., but can't figure out what's causing this. It acts like RF getting into the keyboard. I'll try a different keyboard while I wait for any suggestions, but other than that, I'm stuck. Hi Fred, It's called a sequencer. Individual reels of tape and reel axial parts are loaded in the sequencer. So there would be an entire reel of 10k resistors, a separate reel of 100k, separate reel of diodes, etc. The sequencer then removes the parts from the tape and creates a new tape with the parts in the proper order and count. The sequencer my company used to have would also measure the value of the part and reject it if it wasn't in the tolerance window. I hope that all makes sense... Surface mount is oh so much easier. Re: [Elecraft] Planning the next filters
Hi Chuck, I agree with K9FN. I have the 250 Hz filters and rarely use them. The 400 Hz filters are great. So good that I would not miss the 250s at all. On SSB I also have the stock filters. Here's how I handle crowded phone contests. I set the width to 2.0, sometimes 1.8. Then use the shift knob to clean up the signal. It is amazing how that works and most of the time the desired signal pops right out of the QRM. I contest and chase DX a lot, 90% CW and favor the low bands too. I don't do digital modes but that would be the only other case where I'd consider a special bandwidth roofing filter. 73, Gary K9GS Original message From: David BunteDate: 3/8/18 10:45 AM (GMT-06:00) To: Chuck Chandler Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Planning the next filters Chuck - You will likely get a wide variety of responses, and here is mine. I can’t recall a single time when I thought a narrower CW filter would have made a difference for me. It may help that my antenna is quite modest, and I don’t have other hames near enough to impede my reception. Best of luck as you proce d. Hi Chris, Unless there is something arcing, I would guess RF getting into something. Maybe the control cable to the auto tuner? 73, Gary K9GS Original message From: Chris HallinanDate: 2/23/18 11:42 PM (GMT-06:00) To: " " Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 Faulting on high SWR on power rise Greetings from southwest Florida. My KPA500 is kicking out with REFL HI warning (high SWR). But here is the strangeness. My setup is K3->KPA500->40' coax->MFJ 600W remote tuner -> 4:1 balun -> open wire feedline to 80-meter doublet. In words, I have a remote autotuner feeding an 80-meter doublet fed with 600-ohm open wire line. A Balun Designs 4:1 balun provides the interface from the open wire line to the tuner. With the autotuner tuned at low power, the SWR shows 1.5:1 on my KPA500 and external SWR meter. As I run the power up to 300, 400, 500 watts, somewhere in there all of a sudden the SWR instantly jumps off the scale, into the red LEDs on KPA500, and it faults. It's as if the SWR were dependent on power. Even stranger, when I back the power off to say 250 Watts, holding key down the SWR is stable in the green (<1.5:1), but when I key it at CW rates, the SWR bounces into the red on every dit and eventually faults, when at steady state key down it never leaves the green zone! I fear it is the tuner falling over, but it should be able to handle the power. I see this on all bands from 80-20. Operating into my 20-meter resonant vertical, with no tuner, everything works fine. Any ideas or hints on how to correct this? On their web site there is a link to their Facebook group in the upper right corner. You can browse all the content without having a Facebook account. There are a number of nice videos, mostly from their ship's departure from Punta Arenas. The ship looks super modern with a ultra modern and high tech bridge. It resembled lamp cord or zip cord, and was two parallel coax lines with a webbing between them. I am in need of the proper name for that cable, so I can search some out. I used it as feed for a full size lazy 80 meter loop - about the same as tuned feeders would be used. It worked very well on all bands - providing lots of DX and a ton of local coverage also. Re: [Elecraft] K3S (SDR/superhet hybrid) vs. entry-level direct-sampling radios
Thanks for sending Wayne. To take this discussion a step further, is the Flex series of radios in the same category as the 7300? 73, Gary K9GS Original message From: Wayne BurdickDate: 7/30/17 11:14 AM (GMT-06:00) To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] K3S (SDR/superhet hybrid) vs. entry-level direct-sampling radios Hi all, Over the past two days I’ve been deluged with requests for our K3S vs. IC7300 comparison chart. This stems from a posting that mentioned the latter rig, and my subsequent offer to send out the chart, which we normally use for in-house training purposes. What’s become clear from all the questions and comments is that there’s a need for clarification on receiver architecture. The K3S, an SDR/superhet hybrid, includes narrowband protection of its A-to-D converters in the form of roofing filters (crystal filters). This is fundamentally different from the approach taken by direct-sampling radios, which have only very broadband filtering ahead of their ADCs. Typically, front-end band-pass filters are 0.5 to 4 MHz wide. Their ADCs will be impacted by all strong signals in this range, alone and in summation. When the ADC over-ranges in this “pure” SDR architecture, the radio usually reduces its gain automatically by either turning off preamps or adding attenuation. This increases the noise figure, often resulting in the loss of weak signals, both audibly and in the panadapter. Another word for it is “desense.” You might hear a pulsing sound as the noise floor goes up and down in response to a particular signal, or the sensitivity may degrade for many seconds at a time while the firmware waits for levels to drop at the input to the ADC. Such over-ranging is almost unheard of in the K3S, for multiple reasons. First, we use very strong mixers and gain stages. Second, in many cases there’s no need to turn the preamp on at all. (Example: the K3S’s preamp-off sensitivity is typically -135 dB, while the preamp-off sensitivity on a typical direct-sampling SDR is -115 to -125 dB.) The third reason for the K3S’s strong-signal performance is its crystal roofing filters. These protect the ADC from not only wide-spaced signals, but also from signals very close by. As K3 and K3S owners will attest, you can have a huge signal just a few hundred Hz away and not even know it’s there -- unless that station’s transmit phase noise is blanketing the band anyway. (There’s no defense against an unclean or clicky transmit signal.) I’ve updated the referenced comparison chart to clarify this important difference. Our webmaster will put it up next week. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to send it on request (email me directly). Feel free to share the information with anyone interested in the topic. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to garyk...@wi.rr.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] A VALUABLE FIELD DAY ACCESSORY
All well and good..but FD is in 4 days. 73-Gary K9GS Original message From: KENT TRIMBLEDate: 6/20/17 3:55 PM (GMT-06:00) To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] A VALUABLE FIELD DAY ACCESSORY Headphones and Field Day have been yoked since time immemorial. The K3's ability to output its audio into both headphones and speakers simultaneously has been a boon to those FD sites that encourage visitors. It permits the operator/logger to use headphones while visitors can monitor the action through speakers. The problem lies in the volume levels that each of the participants require (or don't require). This is especially true when multiple transceivers are occupying the same tent/trailer/room, etc., and each have their own group of listeners. Cacophony is not the goal here. As veteran Field-Day clubs have discovered over the years, a valuable accessory is a multi-outlet headphone-amplifier with individual volume controls for each headphone. For several years we have used a Behringer Amp800 (https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-AMP800-Four-Channel-Headphone/dp/B000KU87SM) at our CW position. Lately, we have also been using a Rolls HA43 (http://www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=HA43) which is smaller and easier to operate. Neither are bothered by stray RF. I have no vested interest in either. There are similar products under various brand-names. The Behringer can be had for around $70 and the Rolls for $50 from numerous online vendors. The Behringer only accepts 1/4-inch phono plugs while the Rolls has dual input jacks to accept both 1/4-inch phono and 1/8th-inch plugs. This is another reason I like the Rolls as no "tweenies" (adapters) are needed. Uses might include . . . A neophyte with an unconnected laptop, wearing his own headphones, entering call signs/exchanges into a practice logging program without disturbing the main operator. Or the next shift warming-up before assuming the operator's position. Or someone merely wanting to seriously listen for a while without being bothered by the inevitable traipsing in-and-out of visitors, kibitzers, the lost, the lonely, the huddled masses yearning to be free. Both of the above units accommodate up to four headphones. 73, Kent Trimble, K9ZTV Mid-MO Amateur Radio Club Jefferson City, MO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to garyk...@wi.rr.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Frankly I'm shocked that Elecraft used Styrofoam packing peanuts. I work in electronics manufacturing and my company has banned them from our building well over a decade ago. All of our vendors are required to not use them. They are a killer for electronic components. It is precisely the static charge that causes them to stick to everything. I installed a small UPS on the router in their condo that solved the problem. In considering remote operation options I'm still struggling with how to implement a kill switch that is foolproof. Last night we had several power glitches that left our Comcast modem hung up. There was really no service outage in the area so all it took was unplugging and replugging the modem to restore it. Of course it took nearly 5 minutes to completely come alive with internet service active. This happens often enough that it makes me concerned that if internet service is interrupted while I'm operating remotely I wouldn't be able to kill the transmitter output. So I'm wondering if a better option is to have a deadman timer to kill the K3 and amp output. Not sure what criteria I would use to reset the deadman. I'm sure a Raspberry Pi or similar could be programmed to do the work. When I used the SPE 2K in CQWW CW it was like having a 1.5K K3..just hummed along all weekend. 73-Gary K9GS Original message From: j...@kk9a.com Date: 3/16/17 8:36 PM (GMT-06:00) To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Linear thoughts I still have not seen the Genius pricing. I'm not sure what ever happened to the Acom 1200S. Many people use the SPE 1.3KW on expeditions, I wonder how easy it is to hook it up to the K3S. The KPA-500 works nicely with the K3S but giving up 4.5dBs is considerable, a KPA-1000 would be hard to resist. John KK9A From: Gary K9GS Thu Mar 16 19:19:38 EDT 2017 I think that the ship has sailed with respect to Elecraft bringing a legal limit SS amp to market. There are a growing number of lightweight legal limit amps already on the market. The FlexRadio Power Genius looks especially promising: http://www.flexradio.com/amateur-products/powergenius-xl/ It only weighs 33 pounds. I saw it in operation at the Orlando HamCation and it looked very impressive operating all weekend into a dummy load at a conservative 1.5 kw output. SPE also just announced a 1.5 kw amp..something I'm surprised they did given that they already have a 1 kw, 1.3 kw, and a 2kw amp on the market. I know of several people that have the 1 kw amp and use it with their K3 radios and they love them. I've used the big SPE amp in CQWW CW and it worked flawlessly all weekend without a hiccup. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to garyk...@wi.rr.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3S USB issue with Dell OptiPlex 745 - Win 10
This is an easy one. The USB ports are going to sleep. This can be fixed in device manager. Google "prevent USB ports from going to sleep". 73-Gary K9GS Original message From: mtkos...@gmail.com Date: 3/5/17 2:33 PM (GMT-06:00) To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3S USB issue with Dell OptiPlex 745 - Win 10 Our club’s new K3S will not stay connected and often can not be found by our Dell Optiplex 745 w/Windows 10 (it’s an older computer – but seems to run all of our Ham programs and attached devices without issue). Reconnecting the USB cables sometimes fixes the issue. Oddly, if we install & remove a USB mouse to the same USB port and then reconnect the K3S, the computer finds the K3S without issue. Cycling the computer and radio does not address the problem. The K3S connects instantly on newer Dell laptops and and Apple computers. There seems to be a driver issue with the Dell Optiplex, but all drivers are current. We are stumped. Any suggestions?
