Re: [Elecraft] CW transmitting - any clicks?

2011-12-02 Thread Graham Smith
My K2 emits a very faint tick sound at the end of each dot and dash - I
can hear it if I put my ear near the back of the K3.
This happens using the internal keyer and a straight key, although it's
extremely hard to hear using a straight key as the mechanical sound from the
key itself masks it even when releasing it very gently.
It's not coming from the speaker.

Have other people noticed this?
I wonder what is causing it? It does this even with the power level set to
zero and I have VOX+QSK set.

Steve,

The K2, K1, KX1 and K3 all have electronic Transmit/Receive switching, and I
would expect the KX3 will as well, so there will be no relay clicking noise.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] CW transmit filter bandwith

2011-02-08 Thread Graham Smith
Many thanks for the on and off-list replies.

It would be useful if folk could write to W8JI and ask him to consider
updating his article (his email is on QRZ.COM) to cover modern CW generation
techniques, since it could result in folk like myself making bad decisions
about choosing transmit filter bandwidths. I would do this but I think it
needs people with a better understanding of the subject than I have
(although it's improving, thanks!).

Perhaps also the K3 firmware shouldn't allow selection of very narrow
filters for CW transmission?

Tom W8JI was dealing with analog transceivers when that was written.
The K3 generates the signal digitally in the DSP portion of the
transceiver, so many of those old rules of thumb for analog radios do
not apply to the K3. As Guy has said many times on this reflector,
This is not your grandaddy's analog radio.

A properly operating K3 does not have key clicks and its transmit IMD is
 very good.

Rotate VFO A to select a CW transmit filter (2.7 or 2.8 kHz). Note: Key
clicks may result if a narrower filter is selected for CW transmit.
Of course I will take the K3 manual's advice, but I am wondering why a
narrow filter can cause key clicks?

Re: [Elecraft] Import to the UK

2010-08-18 Thread Graham Smith
Simon, it's worth checking to see if it's less expensive to buy from
QRPproject in Germany (Elecraft's European distributor).
http://www.qrpproject.de/UK/indexuk.html Because it's in the Eu, the VAT is
included in the price and you don't have to pay the incoming carrier VAT or
a (large!!) handling fee for the privilege of taking the VAT off you.

From their web page: No Custom declaration problems,VAT included, shipment
only 8,00 Euro

Thanks for the off list replies.

Consensus is

Yes you pay VAT
No you don't pay import duty
UPS is better if you can afford it

Re: [Elecraft] My question is, Do you folks think it is really necessary to , detail-inventory the Elecraft K2 product??

2010-07-19 Thread Graham Smith
I prefer to do the inventory, although it is admittedly very tedious. When
I got to the end of the K2 inventory, I was missing a choke - turns out that
I had mis-identified one and there was in fact nothing missing. It's a lot
easier sorting this out during the inventory than desoldering later,
especially for items with more than two legs!

Re: [Elecraft] AFSK - K3 - SignaLink USB

2010-07-01 Thread Graham Smith
That's not quite right; the SignaLink USB incorporates a USB sound card,
freeing up any sound card(s) installed in the computer itself for other
uses.

If you look at the schematic of the SignaLink, you'll see that it is
redundant to what is already built into the K3. In addition, the K3 has a
stereo audio out interface, facilitating the use of software for AFSK that
recognizes dual RX for split frequency DX chasing.
