Re: [Elecraft] KIO3B Main Board Repair
Mike - You can view the Schematic diagrams (6 pages) for the Elecraft KIO3B module. https://ftp.elecraft.com/K3S/Manuals%20Downloads/E740323%20K3s%20Schematic%20Files.pdf The KIO3B is a multi-function module, that includes these functions: 1. RF Board interface 2. Digital I/O interface 3. Audio I/O interface 4. USB, Codec, RS232 FTDI FT232R (USB), TI PCM2901 (CODEC), TUSB2036 (2/3 port USB hub) 5. Digital I/O 6. Audio I/O == It is NOT impossible to repair or troubleshoot (component-level), BUT it can be time consuming for the novice or weekend technician. This is why Elecraft stated “economical” (their bench time is NOT Free). — Sage advice from my high school electronics instructor, WB9FUR (sk, 2016) has served me well : External event (ESD, Over-voltage, Op error) and I/O ports are major causes of module or circuit failures. Electronic devices rarely “die” for no reason (assumes QA production of part). — “What functionality” has failed will narrow the circuit areas and components to examine. IF you can “think thru” those observed symptoms, many failures can be pinpointed with a DVM to a few key components. SMT repair experience and tools reduces repair time. — This summer, I repaired an ESE ES-188 Master Clock ... that the reseller suspected was not working properly. Visual and operations inspection: * Not damage to tinned copper foil traces on PC board. * Bulging 25V electrolytic caps (85° import brand) on DC filtering - replaced (105°) * Multi-serial TTL level ports from microprocessor were inconsistent - replaced MAX233 (resolved one port) - replaced 74LS04 and 74LS08 (resolved other ports) I did not even pull out my DVM ... the secondary DC ripple was eliminated, and an external event (ESD?) likely entered thru serial port ... damaged the 3 ICs replaced. Those 3 parts were closest to DC power bus and serial port entrance to PC board. It’s been running on the bench, driving NTP and IRIG-B remote clock for past 3 months ... no issues. IF I were to resell, I would check with DVM & possibly scope. greg, w9gb === Date: Thu, 29 Oct 2020 17:43:44 -0400 From: K4PI To: Elecraft Mail Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] KIO3B Main Board Repair I have ended up with 2 bad KI03B boards E850645. It took out our DVR cable box and the HDMI port on the TV that it was attached to. The TV and its other HDMI port are fine. An external USB hard drive hooked up to my computer (which was turned off) was also impacted but after disconnecting it, rebooting, etc., it is working fine. But it appears that I have also lost the KIO2 interface unit between my Elecraft K2 and computer. The radio was disconnected from the antenna and turned off and is fine. I didn?t even notice that there was a problem until I realized that my computer log was not getting mode and frequency information from the rig. (I don?t operate digital so logging is really the only thing that I use the KIO2 for.) The USB ports on the computer are all good and the logging software does ?think? that there is an input but no communications is taking place. Re: [Elecraft] soldering station
Bob - IF you are looking for ANY Weller parts, contact me -- I will be happy to help or just advise. Read the eHam.net forum and ASK questions HERE, OR send me a personal e-mail. So tidbits, not yet mentioned. 1. The Weller WLC100 (orange station) is an OEM light dimmer and ungrounded iron. NOT ESD, Grounded or Temperature controlled. I do not recommend for Elecraft K1 or K2 builders. 2. The Haako 936-12 while widely popular (and copied/clones by every mfg. in China) -- has been discontinued by Haako earlier this year! http://www.hakko.com/english/discontinue/index.html It has been replaced by the new Haako FX-888 http://www.hakko.com/english/products/hakko_fx888.html 3. The Weller WES-51 and WESD-51 are very good stations and use the same ET tips that were used with the Weller "EC" series (1975-2002) 4. Aouye is one of the better known Haako clone makers from China. The Chinese ceramic heaters are not as good as the Japanese original product from Haako (The Chinese have yet to perfect quality control at Japanese levels -- so keep that in mind if you purchase that route). I have a demo WSD81 soldering station (WSP80 iron) with the hard to find base programmer that I would like to pass on to an Elecraft builder. IF you have a broken Weller unit, I do have documentation and parts for the older TCP units (e.g. SFA-1 springs and funnels for original PU-1 units) -- documentation can be found on BAMA from my library. Lastly, in 1957 Carl Weller, founder of Weller Electric wrote in his US Patent application the foundation and definition for temperature controlled soldering. It is freely available US document for any citizen to read and understand. For the Metcal/OKI crowd -- the OKI stations are based upon Carl's Magnetic Switch (Magnistat) works and acknowledges his 3 patents in their products as well as an earlier 1905 US patent for induction heating - the foundation for their RF/induction tip heating method. Re: [Elecraft] Weller WCC100
David, Thank you for that correction. In addition, I left out these 2 paragraphs, the second is critical for proper WCC103 sensor replacement. The Weller WCC103 temperature sensor is actually an iron-constantan thermocouple (possibly a Type J). Weller used Type K thermocouples for its EC soldering station series. Sensitivity believed to be about 50 µV/°C The relationship between temperature and voltage produced is NON-Linear. When replacing the WCC103 sensor the leads MUST be correctly installed OR the soldering iron stays on continuously and eventually overheats. The Iron (magnetic) lead connects to the RED wire The Constantan (copper-nickel alloy/non-magnetic) lead connects to the YELLOW wire What is a thermocouple sensor? A thermocouple is a sensor for measuring temperature. It consists of two dissimilar metals, joined together at one end. When the junction of the two metals is heated or cooled a voltage is produced that can be correlated back to the temperature. http://www.omega.com/temperature/Z/pdf/z021-032.pdf gb - Original Message - From: "David Woolley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" Sent: Sunday, December 30, 2007 4:30 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Weller WCC100 WCC103 temperature sensor has a resistance of about 1 to 2 ohms at room temperature (27 C) Thermocouples are voltage source devices, not variable resistance devices. With thermocouples, you get the difference in the voltage between the hot and cold junctions, so, for really accurate operation, you need some other mechanism for measuring the cold junction temperature. In this case, the variation in cold junction temperature and required accuracy might be low enough that simply assuming 25C is good enough. [Elecraft] Weller WCC100
This is an informational post for owners of the Weller WCC100 soldering station. Some Elecraft builders have used this soldering station for building their kits. This is the BLUE colored station that was sold by Weller until 1999, when it was discontinued The Weller WLC100, which is an ORANGE colored station, is totally DIFFERENT as far as electronics and tips that it uses. === The Weller WCC100 is a temperature controlled soldering station that Weller sold in 1990s, until it was discontinued by Weller in 1999. I am collecting pertinent documentation for this Weller station (including the Tech Sheet) that will eventually be available electronically (likely through BAMA). This station uses the Weller “ET” series soldering tips, which are used on a number of current Weller soldering stations. The WES51 soldering station replaced the WCC100. The WCC100 soldering station is a line voltage ( 120 VAC) station. It has no isolation transformer and the control board is connected directly to line voltage (no fuse, surge protection or safety capacitor). The control board monitors the thermocouple (temperature sensor) and 120 VAC heater. A "zero-crossing" circuit then turns off the heater (usually via a Triac or transistor switch) -- when the temperature is reached and turns the heater back on, when the temperature drops below this point. I acquired a WCC100 soldering station, via eBay, that was non-functional in December 2007. The temperature sensor (WCC103) had failed (open - infinite resistance) in this station’s iron. Some parts are becoming more difficult to obtain for this station, since Weller discontinued it over 8 years ago. Re: [Elecraft] Hakko 936-12
Ian - For a variable temperature soldering station -- and using 60/40 (Sn/Pb) solder -- stay within the range of 650 to 750 degrees F (345 - 400 degrees C). Personally, I always set one to 700 F degrees (370 C) --- since I learned my techniques in 1970s with the Weller TCP series with 700 degree tips. I do NOT recommend 800 F degree tips or temperature settings, burns up tips faster. Really only useful for SOME lead-free solders -- and you must have excellent soldering techniques (be quick) -- not to lift traces, etc. Get the proper MASS and PROFILE for your solder tip -- that matches the solder joint -- these are far more important to proper heating of the joint for solder flow -- than "dialing up" a higher temperature (which is the common mistake for the beginner). Hi guys, My Hakko 936 with several T-1 for surface mounted tiny components arrived today. It is not warm yet. I have been using an Antex 15 Watt iron since 1971, and I built my K2 #4962 with it. Now, variable temperature is, well, a variable that I have never had to consider. So, my questions: What temperature do you set with 60/40 solder on such as a K2, and perhaps a different temperature when soldering an AD9851? 73, Ian, G4ICV, AB2GR, K2 #4962, LP-100 #278 -- ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
