[Elecraft] how much to stretch copper wire
I drew the wire for my first antenna about 40 years ago. That was for a quad utilizing solid copper. Since then,I have made numerous dipoles, all using stranded THHN or THWN 12g wire. My method has always been to anchor one end to a tree or a bumper hitch and hold the free end with a pair of Vise grip pliers. The advantage of the armstrong method is you can feel the draw and sense when it nears its limit. The force require to continue drawing the wire escalates and then failure occurs. In practice, I lay out a tape measure on the ground beneath the wire to be drawn. Once I have my rough length of wire, I will draw it about 10% more in length. (Example: 1/4wave for 7.010 mHz is 33.3' so I will draw to about 36.7'.)This has been enough to prevent additional stretching once the antenna is up in the air. The thermoplastic insulation degrades well before the wire fails and my oldest antenna up at the moment is my 40m dipole, it's about 12 years old. 73,Jim W5QM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Mods to K3
I upgraded the KXV3 to the A some time ago and in June, to the B model. What sold me on it was the second preamp for 6, 10, and 12m. There is little difference in price between the PR6-10 and the KXV3B.I had been waffling on the 6m preamp for years and when I saw the new XV board, I jumped. No regrets here. My noise floor is very low on 6, 10, and 12 so it does help a bit. Honestly though, I have seldom used the second preamp on 10 or 12 but 6m, definitely. 73,Jim, W5QM On Saturday, December 5, 2015 12:07 PM, SCDolphin0wrote: Has anyone upgraded the K3 with either KXV3B, KIO3B or both and any comments? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 / K3 ?
I just finished pulling my hair out on this one. I had set my radio up this way a few weeks ago when I added the KPA500 and couldn't for the life of me find the instructions for doing so again. What I needed today was a baby steps version of the instructions. I finally had the oh, yeah, that's how I did it moment. That said, the baby steps are:Go to config menu, scroll to pwr set, adjust to per band, then set the pwr level for the radio while the amp is in standby and again when it is in operate mode. Just make sure the power level is turned down before adjusting it in the operate mode. You will have to set the power levels for each band. 73,Jim W5QM On Sunday, November 22, 2015 2:54 PM, Don Wilhelmwrote: Larry, Look at the CONFIG: PWR SET menu item on page 58 of the manual, and also page 75. Re: [Elecraft] Good time to buy Begali products
Charlie, My wife gave me a March R-3A a few years ago. It spends most of its time on a display shelf. While it is a nice key, it couldn't usurp the prime position my Begali Sculpture holds. Most of the reasons why are purely personal but one is what I would consider a design oversight. By comparison, the Begali's finger pieces are spaced 0.575 (outside dimension) while the March's are 0.500. Minimum force to close a contact on the Begali is 6 grams and the March is 19 grams. These two parameters are very personal as I prefer a wider spacing and a very light touch. What I consider a design oversight is the length of the contact spacing screws, they are nearly 0.375 longer than they need to be and to me, stick out like a sore thumb. That said, the key is well machined and functions very well. It is a fine example of key art. It just isn't my favorite. 73,Jim W5QM On Sunday, January 25, 2015 5:28 PM, Jim Lowman jmlow...@sbcglobal.net wrote: Yes, indeed! I have one and it's very nice. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Good time to buy Begali products
Regarding Begali's prices at Dayton, they are directly related to the exchange rate. Also, you are not paying for shipping. As for exchange fees, Paypal does a good job of making you dig for the information but you can determine the fee prior to making a transaction. To do so, follow these instructions: log in to your account, click on profile, click on my money, click on currency, enter the required information, then click on calculate. The last time I made a payment in Euros, I think Paypal added about 2.5 points to the exchange rate. Even with that, the cost of dollars to Euros is still at bargain levels compared to what it has been.I don't need any more keys but I must satisfy the K3's lust for a new one now and again so I, er, my K3 is sorely tempted to purchase another one given the current exchange rate. 73,Jim W5QM On Sunday, January 25, 2015 10:25 AM, Phil Wheeler w...@socal.rr.com wrote: On line prices are in Euros, so a more favorable exchange rate will reduce the price in $US -- if ordered on line. Dennis, I have a number of keys, both single lever and iambic and I most certainly understand the arthritis comments. If I have been in the shop or out in the yard and working with my hands, I am definitely QLF for a time afterwards. I don't know that it really makes a difference whether I am on a single lever or iambic key but I have found that either wider spacing between the thumb and finger pieces or a wide single lever seems to be better suited to my stiff hands. Try something as simple as a stick on footpad or rubber bumper to get wider spacing and see how it feels. From there, you can fabricate a permanent solution if it is to your liking. [Elecraft] Diversity receive w/o dedicated receive antenna
Your second antenna does NOT need to be resonant to receive, either by itself or with another in diversity mode. My receive antenna is seasonal so I have employed antennas for other bands for receive when it is not up. While a non resonant will not present as strong a signal, it also will not present as strong a noise. The S/N ratio is unchanged but the human ear seems to hear better when the noise is reduced. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Heil PR20 Microphone
Are you running the mic into the rear panel? If so, check your wiring. I ran into this problem. [Elecraft] K3 mic problem solved
It turns out that the rear panel jack is the culprit. I made an XLR to 8 pin cable and a mini TRS to 8 pin cable and tested via the front panel. The mic works just fine. The plan was to use the XLR to mini TRS and connect via the back panel. The cable was tested through the front panel with the second adaptor. This leaves the rear panel jack as the culprit. The Heil PR-20 mic needs higher gain settings than the hand mic I tested and they both needed the higher mic gain to be set via menu. I'll try and diagnose the rear panel jack later and I'm hoping the problem is something simple like a cold solder joint. That might explain the really weak signal when the mic is routed that way. tnx, Jim W5QM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 mic probs
Tnx to all that responded. I now have the hand mic working as it should be- all it took was to toggle the mic gain to high. However, the mic of choice will be via the rear panel and it will take some more detective work. The manual says it is a mono jack but I think what threw me was that the microKeyer employs a stereo plug. If indeed it is a mono jack, I will need to jumper the ring and the shield on the stereo plug that terminates the mic cord (other end is a 3 pin XLR). The mic is a dynamic one, a Heil PR-20. It seems to make sense that the low levels of less than stellar audio would be due to the return floating in a trs plug when the ring is unconnected. The shield must be picking up some to give me something. The cable is good so only other option is bad mic but I haven't tried it on another radio yet. Re: [Elecraft] K3: USB Adapter cooked
Lee, I have a similar problem. 30m rtty when I use my 80m inverted vee will lock up the computer while in transmit. I too am well grounded but attribute it to antenna proximity and feedline length. I have found that adding a short jumper to the feedline will alter it relative to operating wavelength just enough to eliminate the problem. I once had a vertical that I cut a feedline for that just happened to be 1 wavelength for the antenna and I had fits until I tried the jumper trick. Perhaps a better choke at the antenna would have helped too. Whodathunkit? The 30m rtty problem on the 80m hasn't been solved so easily. I just try to avoid the combo, instead using the 30m vertical but there are times when one antenna works better than the other. I don't think my xyl will go for a Farraday cage. I note that the filter in use does coincide with selected bandwidth but again, as I narrow down to 1K or tighter, the received sound is still hollow and ringy.
