Re: [Elecraft] Linear thoughts

2017-03-17 Thread John Fritze
Dear Eric,

IF Elecraft was to introduce a 1500W amp, I would love it to interface as
well as the KPA500 does now. If I could have anything additional, my first
choice would be to have a tuner inside the box, that can either be used or
bypassed as necessary.

The ability to be run on either 110V or 220V US, ( and European voltages
). Ideally a multi-tap transformer that would allow locations with voltage
sag to still operate the amp. For example on my boat I have a multitap
isolation transformer that allows voltages to be adjusted to 110V from 90V
and up to 250V simply by changing taps.

[Elecraft] Kit building

2016-08-06 Thread John Fritze
All this talk of keeping parts separate, here's what works for me: if you
know someone who owns a diner, ask them for one of their egg crates. Made
of a cardboard like material, usually has depressions for 5 dozen eggs (60
dips). Take a "Sharpie" and mark the screw sizes, on the inside of the
drepression. I sometimes will double up similar or parts that are used
together. At a glance you can see all your parts and use accordinly.

As a bonus, when you kit is finished and you are on to your next project,
turn the egg crate 90 degrees an write the new part numbers again on the
inside.

One egg crate has served me through 2 K2s with all the bells and whistles,
three K3s, KX3s KPA500, and more. And when its time to discard it makes
great BBQ fire starter.

[Elecraft] Dead PX3?

2016-02-29 Thread John Fritze
Dear Group,

I think I might have to send my PX3 back to Elecraft, but thought I would
post and ask here first:

My PX3 seems to be inhabited by gremlins. I turned it on today (haven't
used it in a while) only to find that nothing is functioning as it should.
The power is not coming on with the KX3, and the knob isn't functioning
properly. I went ahead and put the latest firmware in, and for a few
minutes it seemed to work. When I turned the knob I could get it to make
some adjustments (except the markers) and cycle through menu options. When
I tried to cycle the power, it did not follow the KX3, so I turned it off
via the power switch, but when turning it back on again, nothing worked. I
did a factory reset: hold LABELS and cycle the power, but no joy.

Never been dropped or wet. It's been in my carry bag since last fall.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] Icom IC-7300

2015-09-03 Thread John Fritze
While I think touch screen technology is neat, and perhaps faster, my main
complaint is the screen is always filthy with finger oils. Yes I can wipe
it off, but experience with an AVmap GPS, my Galaxy 5, an Ipad and a
Windows 8,1 laptop tells me that touch screen is not always the best
solution. I like my screens clear and clean because if sun or incandescent
light hits at an angle it is difficult to read when full of smudges.

[Elecraft] New synthesizer shipping status?

2015-04-08 Thread John Fritze
Anyone know how far along Elecraft is in shipping the new synthesizers for
the K3? The only reason I ask is because I ordered a 3rd for our club
radio which I have been holding since the end of February (ordered on the
27th). I wanted to get it installed so that one of our members can write a
Go Back program to reset our K3s to where we had them set before Field
Day started. That way if a new op sits down after the previous op adjusted
things to their liking, the new op could reset everything back to the
starting point.

Since I felt there might be some changes with the new synth. I figured I
would wait to hand off the rig after the board is installed.

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 Syn

2015-03-02 Thread John Fritze
I installed the new K3 synthesizers in my rig today. Install went very
easy even without a cat (or in my case a dog) on my lap. I am pretty much
a SSB and Digi operator. I did tune around a bit looking for a couple of
SSB signals that were right on top of each other to see if I could hear any
difference from before. My impression is that my K3 is quieter over all
(almost urban environment with a lot of RFI), and I felt that I could more
easily copy one signal over another closely spaced signal. I didn't seem
to hear that rumble from another station even though it was only a few KCs
away. Does this make sense? I will give the receivers a good work out
this weekend but my first impression is very favorable.

[Elecraft] PX3 noise blanker

2014-10-02 Thread John Fritze
Thanks to Wayne for clearing up what was my misunderstanding regarding the
PX3 noise blanker. I now see what the problem is. It was in my
interpretation of what I expected to see when I went to the NB en menu
parameter. The next line says Turn noise blanker on/off. Since I saw no
change here, I pressed the knob several times probably ending up back with
the NB off, so when I backed out of the MENU I did not have the NB in the
upper right.

I suggested that it might be better to have that second line say Turn
noise blanker on (or Turn noise blanker off) depending on the current
state. That would be more in keeping with the other menu items that show
the change in the menu setup.

Anyway, now that I understand what I should be seeing, it does turn on and
off. Thanks for helping me out,

BTW, I think the PX3 is really neat!

[Elecraft] K2/10 to K2/100

2014-09-08 Thread John Fritze
One of our K2s needs to be converted to a K2/100. Looking over the
instructions I do not see where this is terribly difficult, but I do have a
couple of questions:

Both K2s are totally maxed out with all the options so there is no reason
to use one over the other. If I add the KPA100 kit, will the 20 watt tuner
still be inside or does that need to be removed? Will it still be
available to use if running less than 20 watts?

When I remove the battery, anyone have any idea how often I should put it
on the charger to maintain the pack? Should the pack be unplugged for
storage?

This is a SOTA rig for my XYL and I think she will have an easier time with
100 watts and a Buddipole LIPO pack. She is having a difficult time making
contacts QRP.

[Elecraft] K2 #6951 It's Alive!

2014-05-17 Thread John Fritze
After several years of sitting in the cabinets of my shack, I decided to
put my wife's K2 together. She decided that she is too busy with work,
studying for a masters in computer programming, and social obligations in
general that there just isn't enough time. I think it is because at xx
years old it's hard for her to see the parts. So, number 6951 is now
completed. Although it is a 15W version, it does have the SSB, DSB, NB,
ATU, internal battery and IO board options.

It took about 2 1/2 weeks of off and on evenings and weekends to complete.
It all works great which is a testament to the folks who wrote the
manuals. Only one missing part (out of thousands): a RF choke for the I/O
board which even during Dayton, I received a confirmation from Elecraft
service will be shipped on Monday. First test contact: Venezuela 10W to a
vertical on 20M SSB.

So we are now a 2 K2 family or is that K2-squared? Oh, and a K3, P3,
KPA500, KAT500, KX3, KXPA100.got to love that purple Kool Aide.

[Elecraft] HRD digital USB wire to K3/KPA500 lockup?

2014-02-10 Thread John Fritze
Anyone having this problem?

This is everything I can think of:

When running digital, my computer looses contact with my
K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500. In other words, DM780 stops working necessitating
shutting down HRD, pulling and re-plugging in the USB connection,
restarting HRD. Sometime the K3 is locked in transmit and needs to be shut
down too because I have no response from any of the buttons. It doesn't
seem to matter what power output I run. I will sometimes get an error
message about serial stopped working.

I am thinking this is an RF problem, but have not been able to locate and
solve it. I have wrapped multiple turns of the USB/serial cable on a mix
31 toroid, rechecked my house and antenna ground system. The antenna I am
using is a remote tuned vertical about 90 feet away with 35 ground radials.
Computer is a laptop (I have several with XP, W7 and W8) doesn't make any
difference which one I use.

The KAT500 has 2 antennas connected, the vertical and an OCF dipole (rarely
used). The tuner is only used when using the dipole. Is it possible there
is not enough isolation between the antennas?

All coax is RG8, except in the shack 8U for the interconnects between K3
and KPA500.

This problem doesn't happen when using FLdigi. But then I need to log
manually or am using N1MM in contests.

Shack is on the 2nd floor, grounded through the copper radiator system, and
jumpered to 2 separate ground rods in basement. All equipment is connected
to one common ground using 1 1/2 braid.

All rig interconnects are Elecraft. No 3rd party.

HRD is latest version.

I been scratching my head over this for several months.

Re: [Elecraft] Astatic D-104 Microphone

2014-01-28 Thread John Fritze
I am currently in the middle of converting a D-104 Eagle into a usable mic
and have had a bit of experience in the past with them. I am trying to
recapture a bit of the nostalgia from my early ham days. I paid too much
for it, but not only is the chrome flawless, but it came with the original
box which surprisingly is in really good condition.

Anyway what Don says is true, there were several models and until you
dismantle it you will not know what one you have. BUT on the plus side,
when I removed the bottom plate, looky-looky there was a schematic
diagram pasted to the inside with the wire colors for my model listed. My
mic had a large element (probably carbon) and an amplifier circuit with 9V
battery (still in there---yuck) in the base. So remove the bottom, and if
there is no schematic, but your mic sounds like it is the same model I
described, let me know and I will try to send you a picture of the
schematic.

I ordered a Heil 5.1 rebuild kit from: * http://www.dxstore.com/heil_parts.html
http://www.dxstore.com/heil_parts.html * for $50. I needed some small
parts for several of my older head sets like foam pads and so forth, so
perfect timing.

Thanks for the additional info guys. I guess I should have posted that the
reason for me to revamp my D-104
was because the previous owner had did some surgery on the circuit board
and mic element. The 9V battery had leaked all over the board damaging it.
So with that I thought it was easier to start fresh.

I am also hoping that by putting a Heil element in, that it would match my
Proset close enough so I wouldn't need to make adjustments in the equalizer
 settings when switching mics.

[Elecraft] remoting KPA500 tuner at antenna base

2013-11-24 Thread John Fritze
I know this has been covered once before but I am wondering if anyone has
any further info on using the KPA500 remotely at a vertical antenna base?
The pictures from the previous discussion are no longer available. I am
not seeing much in the archives.

So, here's my dilemma:

I have been using a MFJ tuner which has just crapped out. It figures as it
is poorly rated, but there is not much available for tuning higher power
installations (read: KPA500). So the question is: If I set up a KAT500 for
only antenna 1 and put it in automatic mode, to always power up if
connected to 12V will it automatically tune my vertical with no other
intervention from me? My installation is such that if I need to reprogram
it with newer firmware I can just bring the tuner to the shack. I do not
need to change antennas, manually tune or flip between auto and manual or
byp. Has anyone done this and how has it worked? Has weather been an
issue if properly protected?

If this looks like it would work for me, does anyone have a god suggestion
for a weather proof box to mount it in? It needs to survive the upstate NY
winters. I am thinking Pelican or similar.

OK to reply off list too.

[Elecraft] Subject: Re: KX3 Dual Watch Audio Balance question / feature request

2013-11-08 Thread John Fritze
My son (W3NCR) and I were discussing this very issue. Is it possible to
code this: Set the volume on VFO A to some appropriate level, switch to VFO
B and adjust the audio to a different level. Meanwhile the level in VFO A
remains where it was set. Might be easier than software adding a mixer.

owners: K2, K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500, and each own a KX3

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 waterfall width control

2013-09-08 Thread John Fritze
Julie,

I found this posted somewhere when I had the same problem. There is an
adjustment in FLDigi itself that will make the width wider. It is not a K3
issue.

*The FLDIGI waterfall display width is controlled by the xN key, located
at the bottom of the display screen. N value can be 1 (where I had it
set), 2, 3, or 4 (full width).*
*
*
I hope that helps. We are moving forward with NBEMS in the ENY section and
FLDigi is the main program with little add on's for EMCOMM.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 and 30' Flag Pole Antenna Users?

2013-07-28 Thread John Fritze
Javier,

Here's some additional info for you to my first post.

A lot of great info can be found here regarding the antenna design you are
considering:

http://www.sgcworld.com/technicalInfoPage.html

If the tuner is at the radio and the output from the tuner is coax (such as
a built in tuner in the K3) the tuner is tuning the coax and not the
antenna. It will make the rig happy and isn't that what we mostly are
looking for anyway? But the main problem is how do we get the most
transfer of power between the coax and the antenna?

A schematic circuit of any antenna is a resister, inductor and capacitor in
series. By adjusting the capacitance or the inductance we can try to
arrive at 50 Ohms to match to coax. That's what a remote tuner is trying
to do by adding capacitors and coils into the circuit. Once the match is
found, then the rig output, coax, and antenna are all 50 ohms giving us the
maximum transfer of power so it is not burnt up as heat in the coax.

A remote tuner tunes the antenna and the coax is effectively flat SWR from
the rig to the tuner. One problem I have found is that coax should NEVER
be used at the output of a remote tuner (BUT we all do it don't we, even I
do on occasion)! From the remote tuner to the antenna it is all antenna
and it is all radiating. West Marine sells a product called high voltage
wire, it is 10 or 12 gauge, stranded and tinned, covered with a white PVC.
It is not cheap but it is a really good product. Sometimes a remote tuner
will tune with a short coax at the output, but it won't be happy and you
will find that the tuner will hunt for a solution.

One other issue folks sometimes have is trying to tune the vertical when it
is too short for the tuner. Ideally you need to be 42-43 feet to work
80-10 meters. If you want to sometimes get on 160, then you need to be
closer to 55 feet at a minimum, but then you are compromised at 10-6
meters. Not because the antenna won't tune the longer vertical but because
angle of take off is too high. If you try to tune an antenna which is too
short, the voltages at the relays can be very high, causing arching and
burning of relay contacts. One way around this is to tune at a very low
output, then raise power once the relays have set where they need to be.
Be careful to not vary too far in frequency however! Another solution is
to add in inductance by jumpering in a coil when you want to work the lower
bands. There are numerous articles in QST about getting a 42 foot vertical
onto 160 meters.

Remember: a properly grounded vertical antenna is only about 25-30 ohms.
So right off the bat you have a 2:1 mismatch. I also do not use an UNUN or
balun of any type and have not had any issues. Again, you need a VERY GOOD
GROUND.

I know for the real antenna gurus out there everything I have stated is
kind of simplistic and there are tons of variables and best solutions per
application. I am just giving you 30 years of real world experience.

[Elecraft] KAT-500 and 30' Flag Pole Antenna Users?

2013-07-27 Thread John Fritze
I live in a small suburban lot, 65 x 125 +/- and have used simple vertical
antennas remotely tuned for years, several variations. My main operating
consists of casual DXing, contesting, and a lot of Emcomm operating. I
settled on this type of antenna because on my sailboat I have used a
remotely tuned back stay to great success. Of course all that salt water
doesn't hurt either. My shack is about 125 feet from my antenna so I have
a long run of coax and it had to be buried.

Currently I am using 55 feet of tubing purchased from DX engineering, on
their tilt over bracket with about 40 radials as long and straight
(although some are bent or curved) as possible. Non are cut to a particular
length. I laid out the radials using an edger so they are just under the
sod. Yes it looks bizarre for a few weeks until the grass covers over the
slits, but I have tried the yard wire staples and have found that they work
their way up in a few spots in my yard.

My current tuner is the MFJ 998RT. Although it doesn't get good reviews, I
have had no problems. In the past I have used SGC tuners and they work
flawlessly. I purchased the MFJ because the 998RT comes with the power
injectors, and it is capable of 1500 watts tuning.

Currently I am using the KPA500 with this set up and have received very
good signal reports. I just have to tune the vertical for the band
barefoot and then activate the amp. Yes, there is an extra step that takes
time and in a contest a second here and there can make or break you.

So here's the bottom line, a vertical antenna is a very low take off
antenna when properly installed (good DX antenna). Remote tuners REQUIRE A
GOOD GROUND SYSTEM. Note the caps The ground wires act like the salt
water, so the more the merrier. I have found a simple vertical pipe
remotely tuned works far better and with less trouble than the several
commercial multi band ham antennas on the market. Remotely tuning this
type of vertical is MUCH BETTER than the tuner in the shack and running
coax out to the antenna. The SWR for coax effectively should be flat, so
it makes sense to put the tuner at the antenna, as that's what you have to
tune, not the coax. Sometimes vertical antennas are susceptible to
vertically polarized QRM (human generated noise). The K3 and KX3, because
of the phenomenal filtering and noise reduction circuitry can make signals
readable that were not with other radios I have owned. Is this the
greatest antenna on earth? Certainly not, but it works and you will easily
make contacts even QRP. It gives 80-10 meters and some 160 in a tiny foot
print at generally a 1.2 /1 SWR.

If you wish more input or construction details feel free to email off list
at my call at arrl.net. 73 de,

[Elecraft] Field Day Guide to K3 and P3 by K2QY--RECAP

2013-06-28 Thread John Fritze
I gave my presentation on the Friday prior to Field Day. I had a couple of
questions on clarifications and afterwards several hams came up to me and
thanked me because they felt it was a big help. I especially focused on
the TAP/HOLD differences and the fact that most functions are clearly
marked. I noted that ergonomically the layout of the K3 has similar
functions in the same general area on the panel.

So the result on Field Day this year was that the several operators who
used my K3 felt much more comfortable with it. I did need to answer a
couple of queries on the fly but over all most of the ops enjoyed using my
K3 and P3. One of the most timid of last years ops told me she really felt
that the K3 was pretty easy to use now that she understood the TAP/HOLD
functions. In fact she would consider an Elecraft product next time she
was in the market. Most of the ops really loved the P3 and it's ability to
easily hunt and pounce.

I showed a couple of hams how easy it was to be running on a frequency and
hunt and pounce using the 2nd receiver on the same band. That totally
amazed a couple of people.

As a bonus, our club has 2 Kenwood 930s, one of which is having issues. So
next year, we will probably be using not only my K3, but my KX3 with the
100W amp for a second station. Retiring one of the 930s (thankfully) since
they have no filtering.

As with several FD operations we can run CW and SSB on any band at the same
time. The K3 output is very clean, not causing any RFI issues (as
expected). The 930s do not cause RFI in the K3, even though they have
issues with each other on some bands.

[Elecraft] Field Day guide to K3 and P3

2013-06-14 Thread John Fritze
As promised I have uploaded to the Yahoo group (Elecraft K3) the Field Day
guide I made up for the K3/P3 combo. I usually speak with P/P in the
presenter mode, so the notes are visible during my talks. I appreciate
the help I received here from many members of this group.

I have tailored the requirements (and you should too) to my particular
setup. For example, my K3 is only used only a triband beam at 45 feet.
The SWR is almost 1:1 across most of 20, 15 and lower 10 meters so there
is no need for the internal tuner, or to choose between the different
antenna connections.

If anyone would like a copy sent directly to them e-mail me off list and I
will send it out over this weekend.

Hope to work you all from K2CT 3A ENY. If using a K3 let me know!

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 presentation for a club?

2013-04-06 Thread John Fritze
Don Wilhelm wrote:

If your main concern is about the knob and menu twiddling folks at a
multi-operator situation, consider the locking function for mic gain,
compression and power that are available in the PWR SET menu. It will not
prevent total disaster, but can help with the basic settings for those
parameters.

The main problem with what you suggest Don is that there are a couple of K3
owners that do show up for our FD, and while they are familiar with the
settings, they also know enough to un-lock my rig, and adjust it as they
are familiar, operate for a while and not re-lock it up. The next operator
will sit down and start twiddling. Two years in a row, when I got up
in the morning, my K3 was totally locked up (would not transmit, most
buttons not responding) and turning power off and back on did not correct
the problem. Fortunately (and I recomend this to everyone here) I saved all
my parameters in the K3 utility, and just hooked my laptop up and
re-installed everything which only took a few moments and I was up and
running again. That is a real plus of the Elecraft products.

The two main things I see ops do, is crank the power to the max (over 100
Watts) or crank the mic gain too high. I always use the MON function in
SSB, and I try to set the level close to what I hear when just talking (how
you hear yourself). Some ops don't like to use that or are freaked out by
the slight echo produced by the digital processing (wanting it turned
off). So those are 3 things to make clear in a presentation for un
familiar ops.

There had been discussions here multiple times, and I don't want to start a
big long tirade on the same topic, but I really think it would be a good
idea that once the rig is locked that a 3 or 4 digit code would be needed
to un-lock. That way, if a K3 owner wants my rig unlocked, I would know
about it, and be aware to re-lock it if the guest op doesn't do it.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 presentation for a club?

2013-04-05 Thread John Fritze
BESIDES THE ONE LISTED on the Elecraft site does any one have a Power Point
presentation they have put together on How to Operate a K3?

I have been asked to put together a presentation (pre Field Day) on general
and BASIC operation of the K3 for my club. For the past several years, I
have brought my K3 and more recently P3 to FD. My club members are mostly
contesters and DXers intimately familiar with their KenYaeCom rigs but for
some reason have a mental block when it comes to the K3. While I realize,
once you have the K3 tweaked the way you want it, you really don't have to
touch a thing, but these guys love to play with buttons. If anyone has put
together any kind of presentation helping explain the K3's operation please
forward it to me directly. I will be happy to consolidate any information
and make it available to anyone else who finds themselves in the same
position.

[Elecraft] OT--RFI Issue

2013-03-19 Thread John Fritze
Make sure ALL of his cable drops are terminated at a piece of equipment or
are capped with a 70 ohm resister. Any open ends of cable act as an
antenna. This is the most common offender! Make sure all splits go
through a cable splitter of correct impedance. Make sure all cable
splitters are turned the correct direction. Time Warner installed one
backwards in my house causing poor TV reception. Lastly, your cable
company has the option to up the signal strength at individual houses.
Perhaps your neighbor's level is so low as to be a problem.

When I had my house remodeled several years ago the electrician thought is
was OK to simply twist the cable center conductors and shields together and
put wire nuts on them. He did this in several spots. Needless to say he
got an earful from me.

[Elecraft] [KX3] 160/80 meter SMT mod

2013-01-12 Thread John Fritze
I got some time today to look at the back side of the RF board, and yes
it's pretty tight but the mod went well with no problems. I ordered the
parts (and spares) from Mouser with a couple of smaller tips for my Weller.

Removal of the old parts was accomplished by moving back and forth between
both ends of each part until I could push them off the board. Everything
came off so cleanly that there was very little clean up on the pads. I
used some extra flux, applied with a wooden toothpick both to the pads and
the new parts. I put a little solder on one pad, oriented the new parts
and lightly soldered one end. Holding it in place with another toothpick,
I then final soldered both ends.

Slow, carefully and viola' job done. Maybe an hour or so total time. I
don't have any test equipment to prove a difference with the dynamic range
on 160/80 meters, but I regularly have wall to wall noise on those bands so
it will be interesting to see what improvement there is.

For those considering making the change themselves, I have only had minimal
experience with SMT but am familiar with working with tiny stuff in my
business. I am proficient at home brewing.

[Elecraft] KX3 -- possible bug?

2012-08-01 Thread John Fritze
While using HRD DM780 to try to copy some PSK, I found BARS in the
waterfall which made the copying of signals nearly impossible. Thanks to a
couple of guys here and especially Don, I found that my KX3 while in DATA A
mode still had audio effects available. When I manually turned them to
OFF, the BARS went away. I did not check to see if compression went off
and the equalizers went flat yet though. I am guessing those should go off
automatically when any of the DATA modes are selected. I am using the last
regular release software (1.06 ?).

[Elecraft] K3 at Field Day

2011-06-27 Thread John Fritze
Once again, I took my K3 to F/D this year with the P3. Again, I had a tough
time getting to sit down at my own transceiver. It seemed as soon as
someone got up from the operating position, another butt was in the seat.
Many comments were heard praising the receiver, the vox, the smoothness of
the VFO (I have the N8BX knobs on both the main and sub) and of course the
coolness of the P3.

This year I locked the front panel power out, compression etc as done in the
software. I felt better that every time I wandered over, I didn't need to
reset everything. I also noticed several ops using the DVR voice keyer this
year ( last year I couldn't get anyone to try it). One of the ops actually
re-programmed the DVR to what he wanted without the use if the manual, which
is a fine testament to how intuitive it is to sit down behind this rig and
figure out how to operate it. In contrast to a Kenwood 930 we were also
using, that didn't even go into the correct side band when changing bands
(which meant confusion when receiving bad audio reports).

At the end of the contest we had 3 rigs on 20meters simultaneously. The K3
had no problems copying the weaker stations through all the interference
from the other transmitters. The other stations, not so much.

Having both a straight key and paddle input allowed us to plug both a
computer and paddles into the back and use either without any problems.

Several ops said that one way or the other they were going to have a K3 by
the next F/D!

Just and all in all flawless weekend of hard use of my K3! Thanks to the
Elecraft team for their had work and dedication.

[Elecraft] KX3, Dayton and the FDIM

2011-05-23 Thread John Fritze
I just want to parrot the others here on the group. What a pleasure it was
to meet everyone, especially Wayne and Eric. The KX3 will be my next rig
purchase! To be able to take it from a mobile (replace my IC7000) and carry
it for a hike (replace my FT817) is awesome. This is truly a neat rig to
use in a Go Box too for EMCOMM. Just a marvel of engineering.

Hey Eric, my offer still stands to use it for a while to really check it out
for you to make sure that you got things right ;-) I really don't see a
problem with that. I'm hoping you wrote down what you did to come up this
beauty to make more of them, so me borrowing it should be OK. ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Some thoughts on the K3 as an emergency communications station

2010-08-29 Thread John Fritze
While I agree with many of Wayne's thoughts about the K3 or the K2 on
the matter of emergency communications I would like to add a few more
thoughts for consideration.

There were initially a number of reasons why I purchased my K3, one of
which was field service-ability for such a high end transceiver. Yes
I realize I'm probably not going to trouble shoot a board in the
field, but that said, if one of the sub-assemblies goes belly up, I
don't need to return the entire radio to Elecraft for repair, simply
order a new board.

The K2 however, I would not be afraid to replace a single part with
something close from a junk box or even Radio Shack's dwindling parts
supply. Of course the chance of needing to replace an antenna or mic
connector that got banged might be more common than needing to cut out
an IC and replace it.

However, if I needed to head into a serious emergency situation I
would probably take my Go Box which has a Kenwood D700, an Icom
706mK2g, a AC/DC switcher, and 24Ahr battery supply, power poles,
antennas, jacks, modems etc all in one package. Why the 706? Yes,
it's a mediocre receiver at best, but honestly, it's a small, fairly
un-destructible work horse. Having used these in harsh marine
environments I know they can be relied upon. I'll bet that more 706s
are the main SSB on more sailboats than any other rig, and unless
you've been at sea for a couple of weeks, it's hard to understand how
stuff just craps out!

I don't wish to start a big discussion on the merits of this rig over
that one in an emergency. I really love my K2 and especially my K3.
Could it be used in an emergency because of Wayne's reasons?
Absolutely! Would it be my first choice to take?...

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] and HRD

2010-08-25 Thread John Fritze
I notice, as others have comented a couple of second delay until HRD
catches up with things like frequency displayed, etc. Not really a
problem for me.

But what is a bit annoying if working digital modes (such as PSK),
pressing send on HRD, there can be several second delay before the K3
responds. Sometimes I need to press the send button 2X. In casual
ragchewing I don't find it more than a minor problem, but am wondering
how it will be in contesting when things are hot and heavy.

I have not tried Winlink Pactor 3 yet, and this delay may be big
problem as the turn around time is very fast. If I simply turn off
the P3 will the delay go away?

BTW, I am really loving this panadaptor when looking for DX. I've
noticed that it's possible to pick out 2 SSB siganls nearly on top of
each other. Then separate out the desired signal with the K3s
filtering. I'm hearing signals now that I might have skipped over
before.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 : SSB modulation

Of course you have to use compression to get any kind of decent punch in your
output. But I thought this would be obvious to anybody doing contesting.

AB2TC - Knut

GEE. Here all these years I thought in a contest I was supposed to
crank the compression to max, and use a SURE 444...Infact, I
used to remove the knob during a contest so I couldn't accidently turn
it down. ;-)

[Elecraft] P3 # 42

2010-08-11 Thread John Fritze
My P3 finally arrived yesterday after walking all the way from
California (I guess that's the breaks for living in Albany, NYUPS
from the west coast is over a week).

Anyway, it went together flawlessly, as expected. Maybe about an
hour. I had to shuffle some equipment around, move my K2 out of the
way :-( and make room for the P3 next to the K3 :-) I turned it on
and my first thought was WOW! I played around with it some last night
and am quite impressed. In PSK mode you can actually see the RR
tracks. I like the snap tune function. That is really sweet and will
be a big asset in a contest. It would be neat to have a fine tune
function incorporated like Bob suggested.

Good job, and thanks to the folks at Elecraft!

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Is Inventory really a necessity?

2010-07-18 Thread John Fritze
DETAILED INVENTORY?

No. However I am a pretty experienced builder/home brewer which may
have influenced my decision. My inventory consisted of separating
things like hardware, resisters, electrolytic caps, etc, into large
piles of like parts PER ASSEMBLY section. I did this using a
commercial egg carton (has 30 depressions) I picked up from a local
diner. I built 1 assembly at a time, leaving the remaining
assemblies still in their unopened packaging.

If you notice, the instructions have you put all (or a bunch of) the
resisters in at once, or all the caps. When I got to that particular
step I would then detail inventory before performing that step. Then
I would solder all the parts at once.

I also found a couple of parts missing BUT, since I had bought 2 K2s
at once, I took the parts from the second one, to complete the step in
the first one. So for me no waiting for parts being sent. However,
even if I did not have that luxury, the replacements came very fast
without question.

My K2 has all options except the 100W amp (I only wanted mine for
QRP), so it's pretty full in there! So out of the 1000s of parts I
received I was amazed at how well these kits are packed.

[Elecraft] my K3 F/D experience

2010-06-29 Thread John Fritze
I took my K3 to our club's Field Day operation. We have some serious
contesters and DXers in the group, most of which are Yaecomwood
owners. A couple have TenTec. Most of these guys have 5 band DXCC or
are Honor Roll, etc. We can operate CW and SSB on the same band
simultaneously and often do. Band conditions here in the NE were not
very good. My K3 has the Heil Proset for head phones and boom mike.
I thought you all might like to read my observations:

The first operator wanted me to set the receive equalizer flat, change
the filter settings, etc to make the rig more suseptable to noise,
QRM, etc because he said that without all the hash, intermod, etc, the
bands sounded dead. He wanted the K3 to sound like what he was used
to. While he might have been happy with the new settings when I
listened to it, it was tiring...meanwhile that guy barely gave up
the use of the K3 for the entire weekend! His arguement was that
without hearing a bunch of noise he couldn't tell if the spot he
picked to run stations was quiet or was being QRMed by adjacent
signals. Interesting.

Two other CW ops sat down for a while, running 35+WPM and were very
impressed with the smoothness of the rig. They both liked the
filtering and the strength of the front end in the presence of other
strong signals.

EVERYONE cranked the RF gain to the max, even when I showed them that
if they ran it about 2-3 O'clock and adjusted the audio gain instead
they would have a more pleasant audio to listen to. Oh well, bad
habits die hard.

One comment I got was that this was the smoothest VOX of any rig the
guy had operated.

One problem we had was that the guys couldn't get the Ant 1 and Ant 2,
and the several coax connectors straight in their minds. So
occasionally after switching a coax I had to go over and see why there
was no output. It was always operator error. The transmitting into
no load did not cause any problems with the K3. Just the first time,
I paniced because I thought that the finals had blown 2 hours into
the operation. Fortunately it only took a few seconds to see what
happened when someone mentioned they changed antennas.

I did get a comment on the ease of figuring out the menu options as
they were more intuitive than the operator was used to.

Comments on the small size compared to the other rigs we had. Only
one negative comment was the buttons are close together.

We use band pass filters in the coax because of the 2 stations per
band, but did not need those in line for the K3. Also, while I could
hear some interference when I sat down behind a Kenwood 930 from
another station, I never heard the K3.

Every operator cranked the K3 output to max (110W output) could not
get them to leave it at 100. But there were no problems observed.
Every op had to fiddle with all the buttonsthat's to be expected.
Hey, we're hams.

For the entire 24 hour period, I barely got to use my own rig. At one
point there was a waiting list to sit down behind the mic or key.

When I got home, it took a bit to get things back to normal for me
because I had to figure out what everyone did. Of course I reloaded
my configuration which speeded up that process.

Bottom line: The rig performed flawlessly. Even with pretty hard
use, everything went well. Thanks for a great product!

[Elecraft] [K2} #6952

2010-06-12 Thread John Fritze
Well after a bit, K2 #6952 is alive! Seems I had 1 diode in backwards
which took out the finals. So after several e-mails with Don W3FPR we
located the problem and all is now well. In my defence however,
after I pulled it, the silk screen was a little ragged on the non
banded end, making it difficult to really tell which orientation was
correct. Many thanks to Don for sticking with me as I sorted this
out. Now on to the options!

[Elecraft] build # 6952 smoke! yikes

2010-06-08 Thread John Fritze
Before turning on power the resistance checks were all good.
Everything looked good, didn't see any problems. The first 2 tests
went without a hitch, so perhaps I was a bit cocky.

I turned on the power to do alignment and test part 3, got a loud
snap, bit of phenolic smell

Not exactly what I would have liked to happen:-( Q7 was toast. I
thought that perhaps I didn't get the insulator on the screw properly
as it's a bit tricky. I also found I had inadvertently forgot to
install Z1. So I put it in, and I replaced Q7 with one from the
second K2 kit, but no joy.

I basically now have a 12V short to ground:

Q7 collector 24.5 Ohms
Q6 base 118 Ohms- right where it was before
Q7 base 2 Ohms
U 10, 11, 12 are all as before.

Anyone have any thoughts before I just start pulling the surrounding parts?

2010-05-27 Thread John Fritze

board done. I did the resistence measurments as specified and all are
OK, except for U6 pins 29 30, the DIT and DAH pins. The manual
specifys between 70-90K ohms, I have 95K on both. I'm guessing that
is OK. Or do I need to look for something fairly minor?

Re: [Elecraft] News from Visalia!

2010-04-18 Thread John Fritze
I agree, yes please, a remote-able, weatherproofed 500W tuner (capable
of 160-6m) would create an instant order here too. I have relied on
SGC tuners for many years, mobile, marine mobile and now at my small
suburban plot where I have a custom DX engineering 50+ foot vertical
with 40 radials. The beauty of SGC tuners is they only require a 12v
source. In every situation these tuners have performed flawlessly in
harsh environments for years. I was planning on getting a 500W Tokyo
Hi Power amp at Dayton this year, but seeing the Elecraft amp, I will
wait. The problem is that no one makes a 160-6M remote weather proof
tuner capable of 500-600 watts which only needs 12v. SGC's 500 watt
tuner doesn't do 160M according to their specs. What's a space poor
ham to do?

[Elecraft] [K3] transmit equalizer settings

2010-02-22 Thread John Fritze
Dear Group,

I have checked out N1EU's site regarding tweeking the settings of the K3. I
am very impressed with the way the received audio is now by injecting a bit
of the pink noise in the background. Makes listening for long periods very
pleasant. I love the way my voice sounds on the transmitted audio for rag
chewing, very natural sounding. I have received several unsolicited coments
about my audio.

What I would like to know is: does anyone have some basic settings to start
with for transmitting during a contest? I tend to like a little sharper or
tighter sound with more highs and less lows to break through a pile up. For
example, higher pitched phonetics like Canada and radio tend to punch
through a lot of QRM better than Charlie and Romeo even though those are
the excepted international phonetics. I would tailor those settings for my
voice, just need a starting point.

The second question would be: Is there a way to save one set of equalizer
settings for rag chewing and a second set for pile up busting or contesting
so I would only need to push one or two buttons (quick change)? Not sure if
the macros would do this, I haven't played with that yet.

If not, this might be a good software addition for down the road. I tend to
move up and down and change bands a lot. Sometimes I come across a pile up
I would like to give a try, so a quick change between 2 or more equalizer
settings might help. Hey, you never know what the guy on the other end
hears.
