Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator
Hi Glenn, I have purchased both of these DC-DC power converters and have been very happy with them. They both have an adjustable output set voltage and seem to have very good regulation. The only issue is with RFI that they generate. The good news is that they are pretty well shielded in aluminum cases. But their is stil some leakage from the power connections but I have found that attaching good quality ferrite beads on the power connectors to pretty much eliminate this as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Low-Ripple-CC-CV-Car-Power-Supply-Module-LED-Driver-DC-DC-8-30V-to-2-16V-80W-/251112762798?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item3a777cadae http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-DC-150W-Non-Isolated-Booster-Voltage-Converter-6V-32V-Step-Down-to-0-8V-28V-/260968513486?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item3cc2ef7fce YMMV and I am sure that their are many other equally fine Regulators out there -- Thanks Jon KG6VDW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] A modest proposal...
Actually the PDF format has the ability to allow comments to be added to the PDF but this would have to be turned on by Elecraft as it is currently turned off, at least on the documents that I have looked at. Personally I think it is always best to give the consumer the option. That way we can all have it our way. :) The Paperless Office is a reality for many but not all. And some would go screaming into the night if they were forced :) I personally have stopped purchasing books, magazines, manuals or any printed material much preferring to have electronic copies which I find much more convenient and efficient. But thats just me and YMMV. As to passing on printed manuals, it is a great tradition. But I have found that many of my printed manuals have not survived the test of time for various reasons up to and including getting lost or used by one of my pets in various ways ;) So again I think I would prefer the electronic version. JMHO -- Thanks Jon KG6VDW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Pretty-printed manuals...
John Ragle posted Why is it that a supposedly technologically-adept hobby like ham radio contains such a larger than average Luddite constituency? LOL John I would have to respectfully disagree with you on this part of your comment. The positive opinions expressed here regarding printed manuals are actually very widespread. If you want to see an even more spirited discussion, just go over to the LinuxJournal site which just announced the end of the printed version of its magazine. People are literally up in arms about this.. :) Of course they are not being given a choice. The reality is that we are all on different points along the journey to the paperless office and no one likes to be forced to change. So your idea of making it an option is definitely the best choice imho. I think we often forget that not everyone shares our world view of things. And just because they don't agree with our view doesn't mean that we shouldn't respect theirs. -- Thanks Jon KG6VDW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Private Sales of used Elecraft Rigs
HI Ray, Its nothing personal. And its not the hassle really. After getting stiffed three times on sales for various reasons (I really believe that there was fraud involved in at least one case) I just can't afford to sell things to people over seas. Granted it wasn't fellow hams but its just easier to say no then try and make exceptions. If you have a large enough business I suppose you have some kind of business insurance against these types of losses but for private parties the insurance provided by USPS and others is just inadequate and the risk too great. -- Thanks Jon KG6VDW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Re k3 receive audio
This is in response mostly to Guy,K2AV's post. I am ashamed to say that I really didn't know better . Not having much experience with HF equipment I just assumed that it was meant to be really noisy and just lived with it. :) Of course this really annoys those around me so it tended to limit the time that I could enjoy the radio without headphones. Not to mention my aching ears after a 30 minutes under the headphones :) Thanks to your explanation and suggestions Guy you have increased my enjoyment of the K3 1000 percent and made me REALLY appreciate the difference in performance between my FT-897 and K3. The K3 is truly an amazing radio. I have had mine for almost a year now and I continue to be happily surprised by it. Now if I could only find a K3 equivalent on the VHF/UHF bands. I know, transverters are the preferred path for weak signal work. But I would still prefer a dedicated high performance radio for the VHF/UHF bands as it would better suited in general as an IF platform then an HF rig. Until then I have invested in an XV222 and Kenwood TR-751a. I will probably end up purchasing another K3 for use as a dedicated transverter platform to launch myself up into the microwave bands especially now that the K3XREF will be available soon.. In any case I would like to give my thanks to Guy and all the others on this list that are patient enough to provide meaningful explanations about why things work the way they do. I also want to give my ongoing thanks to all those at Elecraft that continue to provide some of the best equipment and customer service available at any price... -- Thanks Jon KG6VDW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Programmer's Reference iPhone App Available
Phil, Those are some good ideas. Now a days in retirement I write iDevice Apps for fun and profit and I have been noticing more and more Ham Radio based apps. There is already a digital mode app for the iPad in case you were interested. It is called I-Psk31 but it has had mixed reviews. I too have been doing a lot of thinking about how to take advantage of the iPad. I think I might take on a digital mode app as I think that would be a great use of the iPad. There are also several other Ham Radio apps that I have been using. PockeSat3 which is pretty good on the iPhone; but what you could do with that data on the iPad is just mind boggling (I am easily boggled ;). ARRL Study exams even though that is really an iPhone application it really works well on the iPad. 3D Sun while technically not a Ham Radio app is still just really really cool. HF Beacons isn't too bad either but it is just a port of the PC versions and is just screaming for a more multi touch based interface. Using these apps in conjunction with either The Weather Channel App or the WunderMap really gives you a lot of the information that you need in one place for chasing DX or Sats. I also think the iPad could be a way to centralize operation and control of all of your radios in one place either in the shack or even remotely. Can you imagine using an iPad in a Contest as a single operator multiple radios and moving frequencies around between the radios with just a flick of a finger? Or having a database that stored configurations that you could change at the flick of a finger ? I can imagine having one radio set to a really important frequency that you are monitoring in the background. When it hears something interesting it can then make that radio move from the background to the foreground alerting you and making control of that radio immediately available. It is definitely very interesting technology. If there are other ideas out their for the iDevices that you either don't have time or the expertise to implement I would be glad to discuss with you. -- Thanks Jon KG6VDW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Serial #04060
Greetings Everyone !!! As this is quite an investment for me I spent a great deal of time researching and comparing different radios. I read the reviews in QST, read the comments on all the Internet links and it was pretty clear from the specifications that the K3 was as good or better technically then any of the other radios out there. My only previous experience is with Yaesu Radios. I currently own the FT-817, FT-857 and FT-897 and various HT's. These are mostly used for VHF/UHF and occasionally listening to the HF bands. I have to say that HF not being channelized the Yaesu Radios make it somewhat tedious to browse the HF bands. I do use HRD with them and that makes it easier but I have found the SDR-IQ actually much easier to use as it gives you a visual indication of signals on the band. For my HF radio purchase I considered the TenTec Orion II, FLEX 5000 and DZKit Sienna as they were all in the same general price range. My main interest at this point in time is for a state of the art receiver as I only have my tech license so I also briefly considered the IC-R9500 and AR-ALPHA until I saw the prices... definitely out of my price range :) Plus I was planning for the future as I do intend to get my General and Extra license at some point so a good transceiver would be an investment for the future (sounds good when discussing with the BOSS...) I also want to get on the Microwave bands and from my research the best most cost effective way seems to be via transverters. So a foundational requirement is a very good IF radio. So my personal criteria for selecting my main HF radio were 1) Exceptional state of the art receiver performance 2) Affordability 3) Easy upgradability 4) Easy to interface with transverters 5) Computer controllable 6) Good customer Service 7) Portability My experience with the SDR-IQ left me leaning heavily towards one of the FLEX radios. But the requirement of dedicating a computer to the radio really reduces its portability. And the FLEX radios are not as modular as the Elecraft so I had to make a major investment up front. Elecraft 1 and Flex 0. The TEN-TEC radios have a great reputation and great performance specifications and I probably wouldn't be unhappy with that radio but it also lacks modularity and also requires a large investment up front. Elecraft 2 and TEN-TEC 0. The Sienna was very intriguing and also fairly modular but after researching it there seemed to be more soldering involved then I was willing to do or had time for. So in my final analysis the Elecraft satisfied all my criteria at a reasonable price. What did I finally order ? A K3/10 kit with the KXV3A transverter interface, KBPF3 General Coverage RX Bandpass Module, KUSB USB Adapter, KFL3A-400 400 Hz, narrow 8-pole filter, KFL3A-6K 6 kHz AM / ESSB, 8-pole filter, KFL3B-FM 13 kHz FM filter and the stock 2.7 SSB filter. I also ordered the XV222 Transverter but I haven't put it together yet. I ordered my K3 on Monday and received it the following Friday. Between Monday and Friday I read all the owner manuals and assembly manuals. Purchased a static mat and wrist strap and put together a dummy load so I was prepared on Friday to begin the assembly process. I spent about 1 hour making sure that I had all the parts (I did thanks Elecraft). I then worked from about 8pm on Friday to about 4:30am on Saturday to complete the assembly process and smoke tests. Success no problems !! The assembly manuals are unbelievably detailed without being tedious and the kit... ? Well what can I say other than I am no professional electronics expert but I really had no problems building it. The mechanical construction quality is especially worth mentioning as the fit and finish and how well all the mechanical pieces go together is just breath taking. So after going to sleep early on Saturday morning I then woke up about 10am on Saturday and completed all the calibration tasks. Here I did run into one problem with the Calibrating Transmitter Gain . Using the Elecraft utility to calibrate Transmitter Gain it only gave me an error. For some reason even though I had configured the filters manually per the owners manual it seems that I needed to configure them through the Elecraft utility program also. Once I did that the transmitter calibration went flawlessly. So I have now spent two weeks using the K3 and I have to say I have not been disappointed in any way. Living in a deed restricted Townhouse my HF antenna options are limited. And I am on an eternal search for the best antenna. But even with a G5RV just laying in the backyard on the ground this receiver was able to hear much better than my FT-897. I have been using the HF CW beacons to analyse the best antenna for my location and the K3 makes it fun. This weekend was some kind of HF SSB contest and I was able to hear hams in Hawaii, Russia, Afghanistan and all over the United States on 20 meters. Definitely an incentive to
