[Elecraft] Straight Key in parallel with PC keying

2013-09-12 Thread K4GM-George
Currently I manually switch between PC keying via a Microham Winkeyer
which keys via N1MM and a straight key by unplugging and re-plugging in
the back of the radio. I have been reluctant to simply parallel the two
by means of a Y cable for fear that sending with the straight key would
place a direct short across the output of the winkeyer and wreak havoc
on my winkeyer. Am I being unduly concerned?? Or is there enough
isolation built into the Winkeyer so that all will be well?? If I
could use a Y cable I would have the PC, the paddle, and the straight
key all available all the time which would be great. Thanks in advance
to all who respond.

[Elecraft] Recalling power output levels with K3

2012-03-01 Thread K4GM-George
Does the K3 recall output levels ONLY when used with the KPA-500 or will
it recall the levels for each band irrespective of the amp used ?

[Elecraft] No output on CW with K3

2010-12-04 Thread K4GM- George
My K3 using 4.22 will put out full power in TUNE position. The ATU
works fine and delivers 1:1 swr or close. However, if I switch to CW I
get zero power out. I switched to 5 watts out and still no power out on
cw. I hear the sidetone as I key and the radio appears to go into
transmit mode because the RX is muted. RX is fine. These conditions are
the same on all bands 160-10. Switching to RTTY FSK D or PSK D I do get
full power out. AFSK A also works fine. Suggestions?? Firmware issue
or hardware problem? Naturally this happened in the middle of a contest!

[Elecraft] Decoder for use with K3 and PW-1

2009-09-09 Thread K4GM-George
I'm looking for a decoder to use with my K3/PW-1.I realize there are
several options available but would like input from someone actually
using one before I buy. The PW-1 has sat unused since I bought my K3.
Now that I have the bias mod installed I'm ready to focus on either
using or selling the PW-1. My L4B works so well and doesn't need to go
to the shop every time I accidentally hit the remote head or the
outboard tuner arcs. All comments appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Decoder for use with K3 and PW-1

2009-09-09 Thread K4GM-George
You are probably right. I installed the K3 ATU four months ago and
since then have been totally spoiled by not having to manually tune my
external tuner from band to band. Yes, the K3 drives the L4B perfectly
but I still need to adjust the antenna tuner when using the L4B .
Depending on how much a decoder costs I might just go for the gold and
buy an automatic KW+ external tuner. Tuning the L4B from band to band
is no big deal.

 George,

Sounds like you answered your own question.

 I'm using either a TS-870SAT or a K3 with my L4B. The '870's tuner
will even match the L4's input on the WARC bands and the L4 makes a
 dandy antenna tuner.

Re: [Elecraft] CW ZERO-BEATING WITHOUT BUTTON PUSHES

I agree with everything you say and have used this method for years.
Now if only I could decode RTTY by listening!! grin

As a adjunct to the recent posts on using the Spot and CWT features . . .

There is a third capability that many long-time CW operators
intuitively possess. It is the immediate recognition of the
correspondence of an incoming signal's pitch to that of the operator's
longtime /preferred /sidetone pitch.

Just as well known voices of loved ones and friends are instantly
recognizable when their faces can't be seen, so also one's preferred
sidetone pitch is likewise instantly recognizable when a signal is
being tuned in and hits that pitch. This feature of the human brain
requires no button pushes other than the initial setting of the
sidetone pitch frequency. Once this is set, neither the SPOT nor CWT
buttons need be used (on any rig). This cerebral feature is always
there, regardless of the brand or model of rig being operated.

Several of us used this capability on Straight Key Night when
operating a friend's FT-2000 with it's myriad of buttons, switches,
and multi-layered controls. Once we set the sidetone pitch to our
individually preferred frequencies, zero-beating was intuitive.

However, hearing impairment is a whole different issue and may well
require the CWT visual aid.

[Elecraft] K3 and PW-1

2008-11-14 Thread K4GM-George
This weekend I hope to hook up my PW-1 now that its back from Icom
again. Is there any real need to use a keying buffer between the two
? Based on the specs of the two units I would think a direct connection
between the two would work fine.

[Elecraft] Upgrade problem with new K3

2008-11-06 Thread K4GM-George
I received my K3 a week ago and loaded the latest software using the
Elecraft utility. All went well. Yesterday I activated the utility and
upgraded to the latest firmware. But when I go to CONFIG:SW/TONE I
cannot go from OFF to ON. No matter how many times I turn VFO A all I
see is OFF. No one else is complaining about not being able to get the
tones for the buttons so I am certain this is a case of operator error
attributable to my lack of experience updating the firmware. Does
anyone know what I am doing wrong?

[Elecraft] Using K3 with AMP

2008-11-01 Thread K4GM-George
For several years I keyed my Dentron Clipperton L amp from the jack on
my Pro II. I did not use any buffer and it always worked fine because
the voltage/current being keyed are w/i limitations of the Pro II.
Without powering up the AMP I ran a cable from the AMP to the jack on
the K3 I just received. I noticed that WITHOUT AC power to the amp when
I moved the standby switch to operate the K3 PTT was keyed and the rig
put out normal power. This is w/o the AMP being ON. Any thoughts from
anyone? I do have an AMPKEYER available to use between the units but
thought I could key the AMP directly. Why would my STANDY/OPERATE
switch on the amp operate as a PTT switch? Do I need to set a parameter
in the K3? Of course all equipment share a common ground connection.

[Elecraft] K3 to arrive soon...what do I need ...???

2008-10-27 Thread K4GM-George
I recently sold an Icom 756 Pro II to make way for my K3. When it
arrives I would like to be able to control the K3 from N1MM and
Logger32. Up to now I have used a RigBlaster Pro between the computer
and the radio. I would also like to generate my cw using a microham
Winkeyer. Finally I also need to generate RTTY (fsk) from N1MM and
Logger32 to feed to the K3. While I might find using the built-in RTTY
facility appealing for ragchewing, I know that I would want to generate
the FSK externally from N1MM when contesting. From what I have read I
think I would no longer need the RigBlaster but would just use a direct
sound card connection. How do I control the radio via the PC?? Do I
just use the RS-232 connector or the ACC connector?? I'm trying to
determine whether I need to buy or make cables 73, K4GM George
