[Elecraft] K3 PTT with DEMI Transverters

2016-07-18 Thread Ken Kontor via Elecraft

To: All that responded.

Thanks to all of you that responded to my request for information.

Much useful information was received (simple to complex schematics) from
many respondents for auto switching PTT and TXin / TXout lines to many
Xvtrs.

I intend to proceed with one of the simpler circuits at this time, but
will keep the other schematics on file in case I add more Xvtrs later.

Again thank you for all of your very useful comments and information.

[Elecraft] K3 PTT with DEMI Transverters

2016-07-17 Thread Ken Kontor via Elecraft

Gentlemen,

I am looking for a circuit that one of you K3 users may have designed to
automatically switch the K3 PTT line between multible external
transverters as the K3 is switched from band to band.

I presently use the K3 PTT line to key my 6m amp driven with 30 w from
my K3.

I recently purchased a DEMI 2m HP transverter to drive my 2m 3CX800 amp.
The DEMI puts out 50 w with 1 mw of drive from the K3. The problem I
have is when I key the DEMI Transverter from Pin 10 on the K3 15 Pin
accessory socket, the K3 PTT out on the back of the K3 also Keys my 6m
Amp even though the K3 is set to 2m. I need a circuit that will decode
the BCD output from the K3 15 Pin connector to key the 6m Amp when I am
on 6m and automatically switch the PTT line to the DEMI Transverter when
I am on 2m. A manual switch would be very inconvenient for VHF
contesting as one need to quickly QSY between bands with one station for
multiple points. Also in the future I might add a 432 Transverter and
would like to auto switch the PTT for it also. I would only require
three outputs as I would only switch between 6m, 2m and 70 cm.

I am a Mechanical Engineer with limited Electrical knowledge. I did
build a K2 and can breadboard stuff from a schematic and parts list,
but I am not a circuit designer and have no knowledge of digital logic
stuff other than I know it exists. I am in need of a designed and tested
circuit that is know to work reliably. Given the circuit diagram and a
parts list I could then reproduce it.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any
information you can provide.

Re: [Elecraft] Possible P3 Anomaly

2014-12-30 Thread Ken Kontor via Elecraft
All,
I have noticed the long (several second hang time) before the P3 switches back
to RX after Xmit.I do have the XVGA board installed to drive my 20 16x9
Monitor.I have also noticed that at times the display on the monitor is offset
from the P3 display, eg the P3 display shows signals within my TX and RX band
width markers, but the signals (or the marker) do not align on the large
monitor. Resetting the P3 resolves the display alignment problem, but not the
refresh or hang time problem.

Since Wayne has returned from the holidays and the P3 Freeze is on the
list, here's a little more data but not necessarily information ...

I have never observed the behavior being discussed on the P3 Bug thread.

I have always observed the following:

Select band 1 [doesn't matter what band], set REF LVL to put the noise
on the baseline.  Waterfall background is black, signals show up white
[I'm in monochrome WF mode].

Select band 2 [doesn't matter what band], set REF LVL to put the noise
on the baseline.

Re-select band 1.  The noise will be above the baseline by about 10 dB
or so and WF background will show the noise. After maybe 2 seconds,
noise shifts down to the baseline and WF background goes black.

Happens every time I change bands, regardless of how I do it [BAND UP/DN
on K3, band buttons on KPA500, or typing a frequency in the N1MM entry
window], and it always has.

I don't think it is related in any way to the discussion but one never
knows with software.  During those 2 sec, it appears the P3 is receiving
and displaying a valid spectrum, just offset above the baseline.  It's
not a problem for me, I consider it normal operation and it is what it
is.  But, just in case it's relevant ...

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Beta code 'ghost' issue; Data A revisited

2014-04-27 Thread Ken Kontor via Elecraft
I agree with Rick's comments above. I use N1MM for FSK RTTY. I have an extra RX
window set up to receive signals from VFO B in split mode so I can tell who the
last worked station was while I copy the DX with VFO A. With a narrow 400 hz
bandwidth and 10 khz span on my P3 I can easily tune from station to station
centering his tones in the narrow P3 curser. A 2.7 KHz curser pattern on the P3
would cover up most of what I want to see. I for one would not upgrade my P3
software until this issue is corrected. A narrow 400 Hz curser is necessary for
both VFO A and B in RTTY as far as I am concerned.

This evening as I was listening to a moderately weak station on 30 meters CW.
I noticed that the P3 display showed a wide (+-.75 KHz from center) pulse
pattern centered on the frequency I was on.  I also noted that there was a
strong (XE2, not that it matters) almost 3 KHz down.  The P3 pattern matched
the CW pulses of that station down band.  I wasn't hearing anything but the
weak station on the K3 (well done Elecraft).

So I wondered, could this anomaly be caused by the new noise blanker algorithm?
Yup.  I turned off the P3 NB function (set at 12) and the anomaly went away.

So if you're seeing something on the P3 that isn't there, turn off the NB
function and watch again.

On the subject of the Data A red pattern width change; my normal set up for
working RTTY/PSK (AFSK, Data A mode) split was:

Narrow and recenter the filter to hear only the station I want to work (sound
card doesn't get hosed);
sync the two VFOs (double tap; copy everything over to B);
go split;
move the VFO B (now with the matching pattern of VFO A RX, in red) on top of
the last station worked, fine tune by listening to the sub-RX if desired.

The former (pre-beta) pattern showed the same narrowed width as the main RX
(shows the slot my audio tones would go out), which made it easy to spot the
(TX) VFO B on or near the last station worked, simply line up their trace under
the red swath.  This makes for a nice quick attack mode.

Having the wider red pattern (2.7 KHz) makes this much harder now since I can't
'see' where my tones are going to be.  If given a vote, I like the old way
better if the P3 can't read the filter width and match the display to the
actual.  At least I had a ballpark idea where my tones would go.
