Re: [Elecraft] Re: Mobile Antenna for KX1
You can use the Hustler spider attachment and put up to three coils on the same antenna - I've seen it done with as many as five bands covered. General rule is the higher you can get the coil the better. The down side is the higher the coil also put the weight up high and you may need to guy the antenna. I usually run two coils on one antenna (40 and 20) on major trips and always guy the antenna. 73 de Larry..WD3P in MD http://www.wd3p.net/ At 10:19 AM 3/3/2005 -0800, wayne burdick wrote: On Mar 3, 2005, at 9:59 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Any suggestions for antennas to use for a KX1 from a vehicle? Any experiences folks have would be helpful...72, Ci Hi Ci, Operating at 4 watts with a short antenna is a challenge (and loads o' fun, pun intended). You'll want to use the most efficient antenna that will fit on your vehicle. The longer the better. I've had excellent results with QRP using an 8' ham-stick on 40-10 meters. This is mostly due to the length. The loading coil is distributed over about half the antenna's length, too, an improvement over a small coil at the base. With all such antennas you have to switch elements to change bands. A long whip with a large motorized coil is the best way to go if you want to avoid this hassle. Or, you can put an ATU like our new T1 at the base of the whip. You may also be able to tune the antenna on multiple bands with an in-the-rig ATU, such as the KXAT1. Efficiency will probably be worse the farther you go from the whip's resonant band. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Mission Accomplished
Hi Gang, I've been working lately at getting my average power to work a county down below one watt. Well the mission came to completion yesterday. So it must be time for a big celebration. Earlier this week Jerry, NR5A/M of this list made a special effort to get me Pennington, SD. It took three tries to do it but we finally hooked up on Thursday evening. Then the big day was yesterday. Larry, W0QE/M, and Ken, KA0W/M, and Jerry, W0GXQ/M, teamed up to put me over the top. Larry gave me Gilpen, CO at 2 watts - that took three watts off the previous 5 watt figure. And Ken gave me two counties in IA, Pocahontas and Hancock QRPp at 400 mWatts. He made a special trip out to get me those two counties. He also shaved another 300 mWatts off the total with two other counties I had already worked QRPp. Ken droped me a note a couple of weeks ago that started I was wondering why your signals were a little on the weak side. I didn't know if I should send you a roll of antenna wire with instructions for an antenna that works a little better than what I have been hearing. Then he must have gone to my web page and discovered I was doing the counties QRPp and has since taken on the task of trying to get me the rest of the counties I need in IA QRPp. He now holds my best power into IA with a 15 mWatt QSO a couple of weeks back from Jackson, IA. Jerry, W0GXQ/M, also managed to slip in by giving me Woodbery county, IA at 400 mWatts to save another 100 mWatts off the total power. Jerry has given me quite a number of counties QRPp over the past several years. There are many fond memories along the way - probably the best is Ken, KC4UG/M, now a SK, who gave me 77 of the 82 counties in MS QRPp. There are too many others who helped out to even begin to give credit where credit is due. The equipment for this endeavor was a Wilderness Sierra in the early days and an Elecraft K1 later on. A Kenwoodk TS590 was used for the 324 counties that it took 5 watts to work them. The Sierra and the K1 were coupled with a TenTec 290 step attenuator for the real low power QSOs. The antennas were nothing more than a bunch of dipoles of one type or another. When it was all done I ended up with 2629 counties QRPp. 2587 of those were at 500 mWatts or less. 444 were at 100 mWatts or less. The best state was NH where the average power came in at just over 7 mWatts per county. I'm working on 2 mWatts per county there - with only two to go. FL came in second at 87 mWatts per county. The worst state was OR at 3.91 watts per county. Right now the power needed a county stands at 999 mWatts. 73 de LarryWD3P http://www.wd3p.net/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Another Good Weekend
This weekend turned out to be as good as the one two weeks ago. Three new counties QRPp - two in IA and one in AR to bring the total worked QRPp to 2,624. Better yet, with those and by working a few others at new power levels I managed to cut another 20 watts off the total power to work the counties - the total is now at 3,100 watts for 3,077 counties. When I can cut it by another 23 watts I'll have the average down below one watt per county. 73 de Larry...WD3P in MD http://www.wd3p.net ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Can this weekend be as good?
With three teenagers around the house it is getting harder and harder to find radio time. But last Saturday turned out to be a very good day radio wise. As many of you know I was working on the counties all QRP CW. At the same time I've been knocking them off QRPp. When I finished them up QRP the average stood at 1.08 watts. The new goal then become working them all with an average power of under one watt. The last six months had seen very little progress. The average was down to 1.02 watts and I still needed to cut my total power by about 65 watts to reach the goal. That was not too easy as I already have over 2600 of the 3077 counties worked QRPp and the rest done at 5 watts or less. At this point just about any new county QRPp will come in at over 1,000 miles per watt. I've been cutting the power any way I can. If I have a county worked at 500 mWatts - I'll go for 400 mWatts. If I have a county at 5 watts and they can't hear me QRPp I'll go for 4 watts. Anything to get the total down. Last Saturday turned out to be a very good day. There was a mobile running across Iowa. We manage to hook up in three new counties QRPp at 400 mWatts - coming in at 2,500 miles per watt each. Then there were ten other counties in MN, IA, TX and ID where I managed to cut anywhere from 2 watts down to 100 mWatt off the power I had previously worked the county at. By the end of weekend I had cut the total power by about 19 watts. Now I only need to cut it another 46 watts to get the average under the one watt goal. For me that was a good weekend. Equipment - K1, TenTec 290 attenuator, and one of those 44 foot extended double zepps. Still trying to figure out why I might need a beam, 73 de Larry...WD3P/QRPp in MD http://www.wd3p.net/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The thing is, I almost think the award should have gone to the OM on the other end. He was the poor fellow who had to pick out my 2.3W signal and make sense of it. My part was easy! You can send him the award - both parties the the QSO are eligible for the award - he does not have to be QRP 73 de Larry...WD3P in MD http://www.wd3p.net ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
