Re: [Elecraft] Miniature self-supporting HF antennas

2015-07-20 Thread Niel Wiegand
My favorite all around travelling/hiking KX3 antenna is a 20 mtr endfed
half wave (EFHW) wire fed with an electrical quarter wave of TV
twinlead. See
http://w0vlz.blogspot.com/2012/06/another-portable-antenna.html With the
KX3/KXAT3 it will load up on 40, 30, 20, 17 and 10.

My 20 meter zepp is light weight and it only needs one support,
especially when deployed as an inverted V. I've made use a large bush
for a support before but usaully I'm familiar enough with the location
that I know whether I'll find a tree or not. If not, I carry along a 16'
crappie pole (cheap, light and collapses to less than 4') and some extra
nylon cord for guy lines.

Hi all,

Have you found the perfect above-the-treeline backpacking antenna for use
with your KX3 or other small rig?

snip

But the search for the ideal miniature HF antenna continues: something both very
compact*and* highly efficient. Ideally it would break down to a length of 8
or less, do an excellent job on 20 meters and up, and earn a passing grade on 30
and/or 40 meters.

One other key factor, at least with the KX3/KX1/K1 genre, is to take maximal
advantage of the rig's internal ATU. A wide-range ATU (such as the KXAT3) can
turn a narrow-banded antenna into one that covers a full band or even multiple
bands, within limits. One general approach is to coarse-tune the antenna's own
inductance, then let the ATU do cleanup.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ATU

2012-04-24 Thread Niel Wiegand
Robert,

I've found that the KX3 ATU loads up a 58' endfed wire just fine on all
bands, but it can't load up everything. The 67' endfed wire I have
(which, in theory, is very tough to load up) could be loaded up on 20
with the K1 ATU. The KX3 ATU can not handle it.

So, for your loop, depending on the size, you may or may not have
trouble depending on the length. For a closed loop I believe you want to
avoid odd multiples of half wave lengths. If the possible length you
have is pretty inflexible and the KX3 ATU can't handle it you can try
inserting an insulator half way around making it an open loop.

Does anyone know what the capability/efficiency of the internal ATU is?

Not talking about the wattage (its up to 20 I believe) but the tuning the
 SWR/range

Looking at deploying a random wire/loop so I am wondering if I need a
separate ATU or can the internal unit handle the range?
 Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] Portable Keyboard for KX3

2012-04-18 Thread Niel Wiegand
John,

Have you looked at the terminal program that is part of the utility
package available for the KX3 as a download from Elecraft?

Practically any Windows PC with a RS232 or USB port can be used as a
keyboard for CW, RTTY and PSK31, no sound card required. It uses the KX3
ACC1 port. With the deal you also get 16 memory buffers and a full
screen display. I've been looking for a small Netbook myself to plug
into my KX3.

Does anyone know of a portable keyboard one can use to key the KX3? This
would probably be through the key input on the KX3 so that I could type in
CW,RTTY, and PSK31 into the KX3. Preferably, this portable keyboard would
be self powered by its own internal battery. Also a smaller sized keyboard
 would be preferable.

 Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT2 with EFHW antenna

2011-08-24 Thread Niel Wiegand
Phil,

You might try a 67' length of wire (EFFW antenna). I've used that (and a
32' EFHW) on 20 a lot with my K1 with the KAT1 installed...tunes to
close to 1:1 just fine.

Have fun at Crater Lake. There are some neat places along the rim for
hamming. It's a 2000 mile drive (one way) for me but I've gotten there
twice within the past several years. See

I have been using my K2 with an MFJ tuner to feed an end fed halfwave wire
for portable use (like SOTA). The 20m antenna is 33' long and I use one or
two 16' counterpoise wires. It seems to work well for what it is and 10W.
I just built and installed the KAT2 ATU into the K2 to lighten my pack by
the loss of the MFJ. The KAT2 tuner checked out fine on the bench, but it
had a very hard time getting a good match to the antenna. In AUTO mode, it
only got the SWR down to about 5:1. I put it in ALT mode, and it spent a
long time searching before it got down to between 3:1 and 4:1, depending on
the 20m frequency. I added about 2 of wire to the antenna, and the tuer
got down to about 2:1 to 2.5:1. I added another foot of wire (now 36'), and
it got down to about 1.5:1. Five or six feet added yielded a perfect match
 (1:1). So I now have a 39' wire for 20m use.

Is this normal? Should the KAT2 be able to more easily match the 33'
 halfwave antenna? Thank you.

[Elecraft] K1 Receive Performance Comparisons?

2007-04-14 Thread Niel Wiegand
Elecraft has receive performance numbers at
http://www.elecraft.com/K2_perf.htm#Main%20RX%20Table but the K1 is not
listed and the ARRL K1 numbers at
www.http://www.arrl.org/members-only/prodrev/pdf/pr0103.pdf didn't look
directly comparable.

Has anyone added the K1 into the Elecraft table for a side-by-side
receive performance comparison?
