Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power Drop During Operation

2018-01-26 Thread Pete Michaelis - N8TR

I had a similar problem with one of my K3's (#4576) starting last November.
Seemingly at random, output power dropped to around 35 watts. At low
power settings (less than 12 watts) power was limited to 3.5 watts. Sometimes
normal power output would be restored in a couple of hours, other times I had
to turn the radio off for a day or two. In December I sent it back
to Elecraft to
find and fix the problem. It is still there so I don't know what the
problem was.

My experience is the same as Tim's. I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI

I assumed this satisfied Nyquist since both the I and Q channels were being

Re: [Elecraft] PTT Footswitch

2012-07-16 Thread Pete Michaelis - N8TR
I use a Treadlite switch model t-51-S made by the Linemaster Switch
Corp. I have several that I have found at Flea markets and Ham Fests.

However, for the reasons described below, I do not like foot switches
so I use them as knee switches. I mount them vertically beneath
my operating desks. The slightest movement of my knee or thigh
activates them. In a long SSB contest I find them much less tiring.

My problem with the footswitch is that I never liked the height of it making

mounting it on a thin piece of paneling and then another piece of 3/4 inch
board on top to raise my foot to a comfortable level compared to the switch.
Also some of the foam shelf stuff for my foot area AND underside of the
whole thing. NOW it sits still and my foot is comfortable. Just the
thought of transmit gets the job done.

No, it isn't cute, not painted or sanded and stained but it sure does the
trick.

Don,

When I started work at NASA's Lewis Research Center in the early 60's
we often went to seminars at Case. Local legend had it that in one of
Dr Green's classes he presented a research problem that he himself
was working on and told the class that anyone solving it would be
awarded a master's degree along with his BS. Donald E Knuth
(author of the famous The Art of Computer Programming series of books)
was in the class and solved the problem ( and got his BS MS in 1960).
Did that happen while you were there? I know that this is way off topic but I
have always been curious if that actually occurred.

Re: [Elecraft] OT Quality UHF Connectors

2011-10-12 Thread Pete Michaelis - N8TR
I believe the Mouser description is incorrect. The Amphenol UHF catalog at:
http://www.amphenolrf.com/products/CatalogPages/UHF.pdf
clearly shows the 83-1SP as having silver body plating while the plating
on the 83-1SP-1050 is nickel. That said, I have never had any
trouble soldering
to the 83-1SP-1050. I tin the braid then use an American Beauty 100 or 200
watt iron. It is important that the tip have enough thermal mass. Even
a Weller 550 soldering gun does not have a large enough tip.

[Elecraft] K3 s/n 638 Arrival

2008-04-14 Thread Pete Michaelis - N8TR

My K3/100 kit s/n 638 arrived in NE Ohio this afternoon ( April14).
It came with the KXV3 and both 200 Hz and 500 Hz roofing filters.
The 1.8 kHz roofing filter and KRX3 were backordered.

I ordered the radio on September 14, 2007. My notice of shipping
in 2-3 weeks arrived on March 18 (Katiegram). I received the UPS
tracking number on April 7. A day or so later Madelyn sent an email
telling me it was shipped on April 7.
