RE: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out

2005-04-26 Thread Philip L Carter
Well let's see. My first rig was a Collins S-line in the 1960s. It cost
about $1700 then. What would that money buy me now as far as radios go? Oh
yes, the Piper Comanche B was less than $50,000 and a car was around $2500.

As I recall not seeing, it hasn't been announced yet. Isn't everyone
(including me) jumping the gun a little?

Re: [Elecraft] k2 control board r18, r19

2005-03-23 Thread Philip L Carter
If you knew the value of the 'resistors' that were going to live there,
and you had them in your stash, you could install them in the proper place
and put a jumper across them on the other side of the board. Then when it
came time to install the other board, just clip the jumpers (or unsolder
if you are a neat freak), which would be easier with a regular soldering iron.

This won't work in all cases since sometimes you might be installing a
jumper header instead of a cap or resistor.

If this isn't your cup-o-tea, then don't lay the original jumper that
close to the board and make it easy to clip in half. Then all you have to
do is heat the connection and LIGHTLY pull on the jumper with a pair of
small forceps or needle nose pliers and then clean the hole with the
Hakko. It's easier to clean out a hole with nothing in it than to try to
force a lead out of a hole with insufficent heat.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 mic hole plug specs?

2005-03-23 Thread Philip L Carter
I thought for sure that my K2 came with the mic jack (#370). It's been so
long I can't remember for sure. I did get some plastic hole plugs for the
unused holes on the back panel from a hardware store that snapped in and
worked great until I finished filling them all with accessories.

Re: [Elecraft] DMM test leads

2005-03-22 Thread Philip L Carter
Probably not a problem. However, if you plan to do surrent measurements,
the outer ring of the shrouded banana plug may actually engage a shunt
switch or other device so that all the current doesn't go thru the meter.
It was this way on my Beckman meters.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 current consumption problem

2005-03-01 Thread Philip L Carter
What does the K2 w/o the PA pull compared to the other bands? It could be
lack of drive, making the 100w PA less efficient. Are these measurements
made on a dummy load or the antenna? Is a tuner involved? Were the PA
mounting screws retightened as required? Is the PA and rig in the same box?

2005-01-04 Thread Philip L Carter
As for the bail:

Tie a peice of twine around the bail and use a screwdriver or something
like that to tighten it like a turniquet (not too tight). Insert it in the
holes and loosen the turniquet. If you tighten it too much or keep it
that way for too long, you will change the shape of the bail. Worked well
for all the ones I have done.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 simplex?

2004-11-28 Thread Philip L. Carter

Tom:

Sounds like the computer side of the cable needs the CTS signal jumper,
or maybe the computer needs the rts signals turned off.

Also check the 10 uh choke on the kio2. It is easy to open one if you
accidently get a short.

Re: [Elecraft] internal battery and powersupply or external battery

2004-08-12 Thread Philip L Carter
You are correct.
The power supply must be about 14.2 volts because of the diode protection
in the rig. You loose some voltage across it.
Internal battery will not discharge to the power supply because of the diode.

Re: [Elecraft] Need help to cope with the K2-KPA100 Info 080 message

2004-07-18 Thread Philip L. Carter

Pauli,
Is it possible that you popped the 150uH (I think) choke in the rs232
part of the KPA100 when you had it out? If everything else is working,
It has to be in either the KPA100 or maybe in the menu setting for the
PA. This of course assumes that you have the cable correct that hooks
everything together and that it isn't too long.
