Chris, I have Begali Adventure #013. It is slightly heavier, has larger
paddles,  and is about 50% larger than the Elecraft paddle.  While both work
well, the Begali is smoother and more precise. The Begali also can be
positioned at an angle to the KX3 or removed and placed on its optional

[Elecraft] Travel antennas - outside with rig inside

As an alternative, I  use a 31 ft wire end- fed through a small 9:1 balun
and RG-316 mini-coax as an effective 6-40 meter multiband antenna.   An
appropriate ,  good 9:1 UNUN balun is available as a kit or assembled from
the Honolulu Emergency Amateur Radio Club; their web site is:

of this antenna also is on the  EARCHI web site.  I have found this
antenna's performance very similar to a my 42 ft wire and 16 ft counterpoise

I am out of town this weekend and brought my 28' random wire/counterpoise. I

have the random wire and counterpoise going out the window about 5' away.

The tip of the random wire goes up in a tree about 15' up. The counterpoise

goes out the window the opposite direction weaved through some bushes (to

keep off the ground) about 5' up. 

 

The antenna seems to perform a ton better in a portable set up outside.

There are signals I can hear on 40, but they are much weaker than if I set

up outside. 

 

Another note is the window frame is wood and cranks open. I pulled the

screen out to have clear access through the window.

 

Wire is #26 Silky Wire from The Wireman (my favorite). 

 

I am thinking for this kind of set up I need to get the feedpoint OUTSIDE

the window. Right now the wires come through the window and attach to the

rig with a BNC-binding post adapter. 

 

I believe getting the feedpoint outside the window requires a coax cable and

external tuner. Does anyone have any ideas on running the tuner inside the

rig that may work without coax? 

 

Balanced feed lines will still detune through the window frame too, they

need to be clear. Maybe it would perform better than the wires I have now

though.

internal battery power sources with the result that the internal batteries
can be left in place while using an external battery or power source and
whichever is providing the higher voltage is the source powering the KX-3?

[Elecraft] Using KX3 with MFJ-1899T

With my KX-3, KX-1, and K-1,  I have used the MFJ-1899T attached to the
Alpha-Delta mini-tripod made for the Outback Joey antenna. Attached to it is
a 35 ft #24 stealth wire counterpoise with markings for the various lengths
needed for 40-10 meters allowing me to unwind off the spool to the proper
length depending on band in use. It works well when a better antenna such as
an EFHW can not be deployed, e.g., in a hotel room.  One note of caution,
the settings contained in the instructions for the 1899-T that come with the
antenna are not accurate and one has to recalibrate, and, here, the use of
an antenna analyzer is very helpful.   However, the settings contained on
the instructions posted on the MFJ web site are fairly close as are the

I have ordered a MFJ-1899T and had similar concerns about the potential 

weight on the connector.  I went with a MFJ-332B mag base with BNC 

connector.  When traveling on business, I will usually have a rental 

car.  This will let me use the car as a base for the antenna.  I was 

trying to find a compact solutions as possible to take with me.

 

May eventually try the single band antennas, I have only found the MFJ 

versions. Seems the Maldol ones arent made anymore.

My KX3, s/n 041, arrived on Monday.  After 2 days and several qso's using
cw, psk31, and ssb,  all I can say is - spectacular rig!   Thanks Elecraft
for another great product!

[Elecraft] KPA500

I just received my KPA500 (s/n 376)  and am very pleased with it.   What is
the power limitation, if any, for operating the KPA500 on RTTY?  I gather
from the specs that perhaps it is 500 w as long as the duty cycle does not
exceed 10 minutes operate/ 5 minutes standby.  Is this correct?
