[Elecraft] KPA500 ISSUE
I think I have seen this discussed before, but I have not found it in the archives. So point me in the right direction or if you have the cause and cure please pass it along. The KPA500 Ser. No. between 1K & 2K or about 10 years old. It has been in daily use without a problem until this faithful day. I have not been able to do a full check yet because I changed computers sometime back and I no longer have a RS232 on the computer, so I ordered the necessary part from Elecraft. What I am seeing ( using FT8) is no output on 6M, on the HF bands the power increases in steps 50W then 60W then 70W and on the next cycle it will start at 60W then 80W, 90W, etc. In a few cycles it might get up to 500W, but it varies as to which HF band I'm on. I'm thinking is it's microprocessor brain got scrambled with the RF. I can't check until I get the cable, its on order. If you had this problem, was more than a memory flash needed. Maybe a few parts replaced, etc? Did you discover any preventive measures? Look at some of the amplifiers from Tokyo High Power. They have several that will do a fine job. They are high quality and price now. Yes they can be imported on a personal basis. Built in keyers change from rig to rig, so buy a key you like and a keyer you like and just move it from rig to rig. There are fewer menus to learn and fewer adjustments. Not to mention fewer cw errors sent. I have the Kent single level paddle and a Super CMOS III keyer that are my favorite combination. I have tried many others, but this is my favorite setup. My first keyer was a Accu-keyer I built from a handbook article. I sold it for something new and regretted it. I tried many keys and keyers over the years and found that simple was best. It came down to two paddles for me. The Vibroplex and the Kent and the Kent won because it did not require the hand to be raised above the table surface. Both are good paddles, but that made the difference for me. I made a Plexiglas dust cover for the Kent and then built my Super CMOS III keyer in an enclosure that would sit on top of the dust cover. There you have it. I think the K2 that was reviewed in QST was around serial number 495. The K2 hype was no-way near as noticeable as he the K3 hype. My thought is that the ARRL has one now or getting one this month. The packaging of the test K2 and my K2 got mixed up and there was some sorting out to do. The manufacturer did know which K2 was going to be the test radio for the QST review. I waited until I had gotten my hands on a K2 before I ordered, which must have been a little more than a year after orders were taken at Dayton. Things were not happening nearly as rapidly with the K2 as they are with the K3. QST and the ARRL web publishing seems to repeat a good bit of information seen on the QRP-L and Elecraft reflectors. My guess is they have it in the queue. Because the K3 hype was on the reflector very early on. Now does that change any of the action in the pool? What does make sense to me is to have "ALL" contests be restricted to less 24 hours or less. Why take a whole weekend? The work angle don't work for me because of all the time zones involved that govern work schedules. Just keep all contests to 24 hours or less and most of the problem will go away. What about FUEL surcharges (FUEL Factor for Generation Charges)? I live near Houston and we have low rate as well, but we also have FUEL Factor for Generation Charges which is an additional $0.083261/kWh. My bill was $182.38 for this August and $102.91 of that was the "Fuel Factor for Generation" charge. That made the average price per kWh for August $0.148. The breakdown goes $0.02604 for first 250kWh; all additional kWh @ $0.068903 and the fuel factor for generation is $0.083261 kWh for each kWh used. Each month the "Fuel Charge for Generation changes.
