Re: [Elecraft] Birdies
Randy, Did you try using shielded twisted pair CAT5E or CAT6 cable? This solved it for me. Just an idea... 73 Trev - K6ESE - Original Message - From: Randy Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, July 15, 2005 3:03 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Birdies I have had trouble with annoying “birdies,” notably at 14014 and 14029. I hope my experience in chasing these down helps someone else with a similar problem. I finally traced this to an interaction between the cable modem for my high speed cable Internet access and the network card on my computer. When I cut power to the modem, the birdie would stop. When I unplugged the CAT 5 cable at the computer, the birdie stopped. When plugged in and when I cut power to the computer, it was still there because when a computer is “off,” not all circuits are off, and whatever the reason the birdies were still there. I tried switching to DSL as provided by the local phone company but the problem was still there. It may well be that there are more expensive network cards that would not have this interaction but I did not want to fool around with them. I had noted that I did not have birdies while using a laptop in the shack. So I tried a cheap wireless card, similar in function to the ones used with laptops except that you plug it in to one of the slots on your PC. The birdies went away but the thing was incredibly slow, worse than a 56K modem. So I bought a more expensive Linksys wireless card with a “speed accelerator.” No more birdies and the Internet speed is consistent with high speed access. I should point out that the literature provided with this card says that the accelerator works only with machines running Windows XP. [Elecraft] New RX for portable use...
Hi gang, Just though I'd pass this info on to the list. I'd been looking for a little wide range receiver to take along with the K1 while camping so that I could hear some SW and SSB/CW on bands that the K1 didn't cover. Found it! Check out the Degen 1103. Chinese made, about the size of a KX1, costs about $60 including shipping from China, PLL Tuned, 100KHz to 30 MHz continuous, plus FM broadcast band. Variable BFO for SSB/CW use. 24 hour clock, 2 alarms, frequency memories, direct frequency input via keypad. Big LCD display, narrow/wide filter setting. Local/DX (attenuator) switch. Really neat little radio. Comes with 4 rechargable batteries, ear buds, plug in wire antenna, carrying case. I listenned to quite a few stations tonight both CW and SSB. Also SWBC. It works great!!! If you'd like one too, check out E-Bay and look for the seller Liypn. Wayne, hope this was OK to post this here. I figured it would be as it doesn't compete with Elecraft products and other guys may have wanted it for the same reason. 73's Trev K6ESE ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] New RX for portable use...
I think you might be thinking of the 1102, as this has a SSB switch on the front that turns on the BFO. Hi Trev, I saw a review on this some time ago...I *think* it was the same one...and it seemed to indicate that tuning SSB/CW was a bit strange in that you could only program SSB/CW reception in one particular bank of memories or something strange of that nature, and you couldn't switch modes easily either. Am I confused, is this not the problem that it was made out to be, or is this correct? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 losing its match
I'd really like to hear if this is an issue and if there is a solution. I've been thinking of building a KX1 for the fun of it, but don't want a buggy rig... From my point of view it sounds like an RF on the rig problem...high voltage at the antenna connector may be triggering the ATU into some wierd tune state? It's just a guess, but in the past I've had similar problems with other rigs when this was the case, a voltage node at the rig... 73's Trev K6ESE - Original Message - From: David Pratt [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Lloyd Lachow [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: List Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 11:00 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX1 losing its match I get a very similar problem with my KX1, Lloyd, and it has put me off using it. I can tune it up and it matches nicely, producing almost 4W output. Then unexpectedly while in the middle of a QSO the relays will start clattering and the power goes down to 1 to 2W. I have rewound all my toroids and checked everything for dry joints and solder bridges, but the problem still persists. It doesn't happen every time I use it, but it is unreliable. Any pointers that anyone can give as to the possible cause will be much appreciated. 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Lloyd Lachow [EMAIL PROTECTED] said Lately, there have been a bunch of times when I power my KX1 with a 12V supply, activate the tuner to get a match, and the result is 4-5W and a good match. Then, while operating, or just while it's sitting, not being operated, I'll sometimes hear a few relays chatter for a split second, and the match seems to have been lost. When I transmit, I see that the power out is down to 2W or so. I need to activate TUN again, which will restore the match and the higher power out. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Any OO's on reflector?
We've been listening to Sam for a few nights now Al and there has been quite a discussion about it on the glowbugs list. Check out this link for an audio recording I made of Yosemite Sam with my K2: http://www.k6ese.com/data/yosemitesam/Yosemite_Sam_3700KHz_12-21-04_0413UTC_LSB.wav Many of us are thinking along the lines that it's some kind of Military or CIA station for training or other... If anyone has a clue there's a bunch of us interested... Check out 3700 KHz and he'll be there every 40 seconds...There's some kind of Digital burst transmission right before it... 73 Trev - K6ESE - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, December 20, 2004 11:43 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Any OO's on reflector? I was up in the novice band again tonight, calling CQ (with no answers). I heard some weird signals. The weirdest is on exactly 3700.00 LSB; exactly every 40 seconds, a recording of Yosemite Sam saying, Varmint, I'm-a gonna blow you to smithereens!! Can anyone else hear that? But aside from this unidentified signal, there are many other mystery signals. For example, I planted myself on 3720 and halfway through my CQ I heard a weak carrier. I paused, thinking it was somebody trying to break me, but nothing. This happened on several other frequencies between 3700 and 3723 or so. It was as if I was triggering an automated station with my signal. At one point, I was lighting up these weak carriers and 'long dash' stations as I tuned down from 3720, leaving a trail of them in my wake. Does anyone know what these are? No wonder nobody goes into the Novice band anymore! What an unpleasant experience. Al W6LX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Jim, I use Eagle by Cadsoft: http://www.cadsoft.de/ and really love it! Getting PCB's made is no problem. Just generate your Gerber files and any PCB house will do it. I recommend AP Circuits for small quantities, they are VERY reasonable and a 24 Hour turn around from the time they get your files until the PCB's ship FED EX. [Elecraft] OT-well sort of:Short Wave Receivers...Suggestions???
Hi Gang, I'm thinking of buying a short wave receiver like a Grundig or something, and have been looking at them on the web. What I have in mind is a very small, pocket sized rig, 2 AA cells for power... Now, I have found a couple of models, but they don't have a BFO for CW, and don't do SSB either, AM only. Now, I'd like to find one that does it all from 100 KHz to 30 MHz...any suggestions... Been working on the R-390A. The First Mixer died (6C4), so decided to go through the entire rig this weekend and replace all of the known problem components. Turned out great! Anyway, I really enjoyed listening to the BBC World Service among other stations while I was letting the rig burn in today. I had forgotten how much I used to like to listen to SW Stations...Plus, you get a different perspective on World events and such, so that's why I'm looking for a portable. Would be nice to have all the modes though...Might be Pie in the Sky, but maybe not...Seems like a good idea for an Elecraft product! A portable general coverage (100KHz-30MHz) receiver with R-390A performance in your pocket ;-) Come on Wayne... 73 Trev - K6ESE ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. That's right...we might have EIGHT Barbers on hand tonight! If you work all eight on all three bands, you'd get 24,000 bonus points. But it's simply not possible. Your Barbers: Joe, AA4NN, operating his club call, K5ESE. Joe's in Delhi, LA, tonight, operating his K2 at 5W to a center-fed Zepp at 17 feet. Jeff, K9ESE, in Muncie, IN, will be running his Red Hot 40 and Red Hot 20 at 5W to a vertical end-fed Zepp for 20 and 40 meters, and an NVIS horizontal end-fed Zepp for 40 meters. The NVIS antenna will be 16 feet off the ground, with a wire reflector directly under it. Both antennas tuned with LDG Z-11 tuners. Be tough to work Jeff on 80M tonight. Trev, K6ESE, will be coming to you from Los Angeles, CA, on his K2 at 5W into an 88' EDZ inverted vee, 40' at the apex, and 12' at the ends. The ends face roughly North-South. His paddle will be either the Schurr Profi II or Begali Magnetic Signature. Monty, N5ESE, in Austin, TX, is also running a K2 at 5W, and it's hooked up to a 40M inverted vee. I'm ALMOST sure Monty will be in there... Tom, K2ESE, in Elizabeth, NJ, one of our new Barbers, will be using an FT-1000 MK5 (cranked down to 5 watts, of course), an Alpha Delta LB Plus dipole (160~40 ), and a beam for the higher bands. Bryan, W0ESE, of Holts Summit, MO, is another new Barber. Joe Rutledge, W7ESE, of Seattle, WA, rounds out our current crop of first-time Barbers. He wanted to use his Rock-Mite, but, hopefully, I've convinced him to use his my FT-897 at 5 watts, to give more of us a chance to work him. Joe is using a trap dipole. Lloyd, K3ESE, in Reisterstown, MD, is using his multiPIG+ at 5W to an 88' EDZ at 45' and a 302' horizontal loop up about 50', both fed with balanced line and tuned with a ZM-2. Barbers will call CQ ESE, and Customers will call CQ BS. Barbers may work split, if necessary. All the details, an easy-to-use autolog for reporting your scores afterwards, and results will be found at http://www.io.com/~n5fc/barbershop_contest.htm . This event combines the non-stop action of a two-hour sprint with the hunt-type event, albeit with eight ops being hunted, rather than one or two. The Barbers are spread out across the US, so everyone ought to be able to grab some of those bonus points. ...got two bits...? for the Barbers, Lloyd, K3ESE __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [Elecraft] OT: SMT kits?
Actually, I find surface mount components much easier to replace in most cases than through hole parts. Especially when you are prototyping and you have to change components often. No holes to clean out, no plate throughs to damage, no leads to clip. Once you get used to the size of the parts and a little different technique in building, it's easy. As to the comment about it being for machine assembly only, we hand build all prototype pcb's at work. Very high density stuff too. Not that big a deal once you have done it a few times. The K1 could probably be the size of the KX1 if all SMD's were used... 73's Trev - K6ESE http://www.qsl.net/k6ese dit dididit dit dit dit ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
