[Elecraft] K3s+KPA500 SSB Audio Distortion
Michael I also have the same problem. Worked on it with Elecraft Support several times to no avail. I have tried several different microphones, antennas, baluns. Still no joy. I also use 18 watts drive, I had not thought of anything other than rf feedback. I will play with different drive levels.In frustration I have quit using the KPA-500. I hope you are on to something. Making adjustments to mic gain, compression levels, TX EQ seems to make no difference to this report. These adjustments do change the sound of the audio but do not reduce the reports of muffled or nasal characteristics. I normally run the KPA500 at 500 watts PEP output and the K3s is set to 18 watts to achieve this output. This morning I suspected that this nasal sound might be related to running the K3s at 18 watts as that uses both the 100 watt amplifier and the 12 watt amplifier but in series at very low drive levels. As a test I cut off the KPA500 and ran the K3s at 100 watts and the distortion was gone. As a second test I dropped the drive to 11.9 watts which dropped off the 100 watt amplifier module and runs the low power module at almost full power and the audio was still clean with the KPA500 delivering about 300 watts PEP. Is this something that anyone else has observed? Are there any built in tests or adjustments that might help this issue? I have run the transmitter gain calibration at all three power levels with satisfactory results. Oh yes,?. The condition is the same using a dynamic mic (EV RE50), an Electret Mic (MH4 & CM500) or mic audio from a USB connected computer (Blue Yeti). Further investigation reveals that I actually blew out the K3's internal speaker. Ohmmeter measurement at the speaker terminals shows that the coil is wide open. This is really good news, because the speaker is easily replaceable in the field. It's also good news because it points out the efficacy of the E85056 protection mod. My apologies for making a wrong assumption. The symptoms were exactly the same as the two previous failures of the speaker amp. [Elecraft] KX3 Affordable Heatsink
Johnny I too am using one of John's KB8UHN heatsinks. My first impression is the quality and price. I opted for the unpainted version and I like the way it matches the KX3 lettering and contrasts the black. I have not used it in heavy digital transmitting but this weekend. Dave we need to listen better. Also better band conditions would help. I also have the KX3 and have tried to check in but failed. So I use my trusty K3. Phil goes SOTA and makes it with his KX3. Seriously we need to relay those we hear that are not being heard by net control. Old established net etiquette. One thing I miss in my Elecraft Transceivers from my IC-7000 days. I miss the end of band notification. Especially in the KX3 when operating it portable or mobile. Not as critical in the K3 but would be a nice feature in both K3 and KX3 for sight impaired or sightless hams or old guys like me who are trying to multi-task. [Elecraft] K3 Speaker Buzz
Anyone had any experience with the speaker buzzing on voice peaks? I hear it slightly (old ears with ringing) grin. My wife and ham son say it is annoying to them with better ears. I plugged in external speakers and headphones all seems ok. Makes me think internal speaker or mechanical vibration.
