Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Power Supply Cable Size

2018-08-01 Thread tnnyswy--- via Elecraft
I'm missing something here!I keep seeing the question being asked, " What size
cable is the power cord?"
How about employing the KISS theory.
Would it not make sense to make up an extension cord with a length to the
approximate
desired location from the power source?
Such an extension would be fitted with proper receptacle as required  by
code,and is capable of
at least twice the Amperage required by the KPA1500.

I went directly to Elecraft with my question. The answer is 6g.

I was told to be sure to use the correct crimp tool for the job.  If I
make the cable I'll probably just have Powerwerx handle it as they have
the correct hydraulic tool for the job.

So it probably is a decent mic and it isn’t too expensive. If you like the look
of it and can power it, why not? The detailed info on Amazon says it works with
5 V bias. One reviewer says the response rolls off under 150 Hz, which would be
good for communications use.

This is a good description of the tradeoffs. BUT -- there is NO useful
energy in human speech below about 200 Hz, and a cone doesn't have to be
very big to reproduce that with reasonable efficiency. We're not
reproducing music here. Riley Hollingsworth, our hero who cleaned up ham
radio in his gig at the FCC before he retired a decade or so ago, said
it quite well; "if you want to transmit hi-fi, buy a radio station."

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Power Drop During Operation

Check for loose connections. Seems that there is a increase in resistance after
prolong use.

I checked it at the time. 13.3 Vdc  reported by the K3 meters. It seems solid
(big Astron RS-50M) , and likely did not drop while operating.

This first thing I would do is check the voltage at the radio. There is a
voltmeter in my K3S so there probably is one in the K3.  You could have a power
supply issue or just low voltage in Curacao. I try to maintain 13.5V on  TX.

I was running some stations on 160-meters this morning, and noted that the
power output had dropped from the amp.

Further investigation found that the maximum power out from the K3/100 was
reduced from ~100W to about 54W, with no error messages displayed on the K3.
Advancing the 'PWR' control beyond 54 W made no difference. I stopped
operating, and found that the power slowly restored, first to a maximum of 84W,
and then back to the normal 100W maximum.

I assume that this is an issue with temperature? The ambient temperature was
cool (A/C running in shack). I have not noted this problem before.

The fan was set to 'Config > KPA3 > PA nor'.  recommended setting for hard
contest use?
