Re: [Elecraft] K3 13.8 VDC power

2014-12-22 Thread tom armour
I use one of these power supplies with a battery backup module installed
(Model: SEC-1223BBM). I have a deep cycle battery attached to
it.http://www.samlexamerica.com/products/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=516The
hot-switches to battery is very nice when power fails. Also if you happen to
draw more than 25A it uses the battery for the difference from up to 35A. It
charges the battery at 5A with normal power.Tom - wa4ta

Wow, thanks to all for the greatly informative answers. I gleaned many
 good ideas from them.

This is my concern; I am interested in protecting my K3 from damage by
not being shut down properly should a power interruption occur while the
K3 is operating. For this design, I'm thinking about a worst case
scenario; in transmit mode at 100 watts/20 amps, plus accessories on.

I am concerned about Hydrogen gas while charging a lead-acid battery
here in the furnace room. Since I don't need to operate by battery
power, I'd like to know your thoughts about if a Gel-Cel battery of a 9
amp variety would handle the 20 amp load until I could go to receive
 mode and properly shut down?
I haven't had any experience drawing that much amperage from a gel-cel
momentarily. I don't know if the load voltage would be adequate to keep
the K3 alive. I'd need to test it using an older style radio. I'm
hoping someone has had experience related to this.

 Thanks in advance for comments,

 Dick,

Now that you are 'on the air'...

Pressing the tune button on the KAT500 means that I want to tune.
Wouldn't it be nice if the K3 (automatically) gives a tune signal when I
 do that?

Is that somewhere on the list? Or will this never become reality?

Re: [Elecraft] Update on a Question About the P3 SVGA and Mac Computers

2014-07-10 Thread tom armour
Why not just look at the P3 display? Don't you need that to have the P3 SVGA?
I don't have a P3.
What about using a Softrock Lite IF to a USB sound card on the Macbook Air?
The Softrock Lite is about $22 but you have to build it. You could also get a
LP-Pan2, but you already have the P3 so you may not want to do that.
A quick google search turned up
this:http://www.epiphan.com/products/frame-grabbers/vga2usb/
It is $299 list price, but there should be other less expensive vga-to-usb
devices that can be used on a Mac.
Hope that gives you a place to start. Although I may not be understanding what
you are asking al. I do have a Softrock light IF to a sound card on my Windows
PC. I have not tried it to my Macbook Pro, but that is a company machine.

Subject: [Elecraft] Update on a Question About the P3 SVGA and Mac Computers

A week or two ago I posted this question: Would it be possible to have
the P3's SVGA output displayed on the screen of a MacAir computer, and
have a logging program resident on the same computer, and be able to
toggle between the two with a simple computer keyboard stroke? Neat trick
for contesting if there's no room for dual monitors, eh?

The simple answer (but see below) turns out to be no - with some dongling
older Macs could operate as dumb monitors but newer ones (like my
MacAir) cannot, a fact I had confirmed by a tech at the local Apple store.
I was told that only the 27 monitor (too big for my space) might be able
to do that, and maybe it couldn't either.

I was referred by a member of this reflector (thank you) to a
computer-consultant friend of his, from whom I learned that there was no
direct way to do it but that it could be done if the P3's SVGA output
could be made into the electronic equivalent of an Internet web site.
Moreover, he said, that should be possible using something called
 Raspberry Pi.

Right. For an EE or computer expert, maybe; but not for a Liberal Arts
sort of guy. Even my Internet research about Raspberry Pi was
entertaining but incomprehensible. But that aside, does anyone know of a
way to feed the P3 output into a server sort of thing and have it come out
as something that will fool the MacAir into thinking it's a web site,
hence toggleable vis-a-vis the resident logging program?

If it turns out to be patentable I'm willing to share the royalties . . .

Re: [Elecraft] Learning Morse Code [OT]

2014-05-28 Thread tom armour

Here are some of my resources I used for learning starting in January of 2014.
A lot of it was already mentioned.
First note: Spend 25% of your time practicing sending code. It helps you
associate sound sequences with characters. Code oscillators are good for this.
You can also use your rig in test mode to practice. CW_player and FLDigi can
decode CW from a a PC mic.
Second note: practice every day for at least 20 minutes, don't skip days.
Third note: get on the air as soon as you can. Even if you cannot copy
perfectly. Send QRS or AGN or ? if you didn't get something.

My preferred software was cw_player to get started and FLDigi once I was
primarily playing text files.
Here are some good
tips:http://www.skccgroup.com/member_services/beginners_corner/
skccgroup is an excelent resource.
---
Getting started: (random characters and text players)
CW Player: http://www.f6dqm.fr/software.htm
Just Learn Morse Codehttp://www.justlearnmorsecode.com/
g4fon Koch trainer:http://www.g4fon.net/CW%20Trainer.htm
Learn CW Online:http://lcwo.net/

FLDigi is harder to set up, but probably the cleanest CW sender of text:(most
of the other software will send CW from text files
also)http://www.w1hkj.com/download.html
---
Additional resources:
Text files for a player: (this has character groups and words for those groups
- get the zipped collection file)http://nfarl.org/sigCW/cwIntro.html
Morse code podcast at
5WPM:http://aa9pw.com/category/morse-code/podcast-morse-code/He also has some
good online resources:http://aa9pw.com/morsecode/
Nice collection of text to put into one of the CW
players:http://www.k7qo.net/answers.zip
He also has MP3 files but I preferred to play the files through a player at the
speed I wanted.http://www.k7qo.net/
ARRL has on air code and MP3 files: (BTW: ARRL uses FLDigi to send their
code)You can also get the answer file and send it through your preferred cw
player at the speed you
want)http://www.arrl.org/code-transmissionshttp://www.arrl.org/code-practice-files
Longer texts for players, it also has MP3's that slowly increase in
speed:http://www.skccgroup.com/member_services/learning_center/
After you get to about 5-7wpm you can use Morse runner (10wpm minimum) to
practice copying call signs in a simulated
contest:http://www.dxatlas.com/morserunner/
Another speed trainer I haven't used yet is:http://www.rufzxp.net/
Hope that helps.

which I assume are hair driers and curling irons.
It really could be anything, but probably something one of your neighbors has.
Good luck finding it, if it continues.

 Subject: [Elecraft] Noise, RFI ?

Using my K3 I was trying to pick up a ZL2 station (New Zealand) around 18.08
MHz this morning (about 9:50 AM PST) when this huge noise blanketed
everything out. It was about 30/9 and absolutely solid across the spectrum
shown on the P3. Using my KPA500, I switched to the 20 meter band -- same
noise, same level, same broadband impact.

I determined that the noise was from roughly 1400 KHz all the way up to 28.05
MHz. All about 30/9. About the time that I finished checking this full
MF/HF spectrum of noise it switched off.

Then, it switched on, and stayed on for about 5 seconds, then off again. I
turned on my Icom R75. The next time the noise came on I checked it with the
R75 and the same noise, same 30/9 level, same broad across the bands.

Obviously man-made or under man control as it switched on and off and was on
for various periods of time. This noise seems to be close, like generated in
 the neighborhood someplace.

Anyone have ideas of the cause. You noise experts (Jim?) should have ideas.
I was thinking maybe an arc welding machine but that is just a wild guess.
It sure seems to be something that can be switched on and off. It is not
periodic in that the on/off switching is at varying intervals. The longest
on period is about one minute, the shortest on period about 2 seconds. And,
it has been quiet for the last 10 minutes or so.

 Thanks for your help.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 to KAT500

2014-02-16 Thread tom armour
So I ordered my K3 after this discussion and decided not to get the AUX cable.
Now subsequently there is new firmware that makes me want the AUX cable (I
would have got it from Elecraft if I had know of the new firmware).
If I order it from Elecraft it now costs ~$46 including shipping and waiting a
week to get it.
I can get this cable locally: http://www.qvs.com/specs/CC320M1-xx_S.jpg
Will that work for the AUX cable?

Some folks feel the need for an AUX cable to tell the KAT500 what band
it is on. I don't, because the KAT500 has a very fast frequency counter
that can figure that out with a short burst of RF.

or does KAT500 come with all cable beeded to connect it to the K3?

 Yes.
I see a cable for KAT500 to KPA500 but not to the K3.

Yes. To prevent damage to its relays, the KAT500 must be able to
interrupt the keying line to any power amp that is used. It has an RCA
input, and an RCA output. So ONLY if you're running an amp, you need an
RCA-RCA between rig and KAT500, and another between KAT500 and power amp
 PTT.

Is there anything I'll be missing with the KAT500 vs the internal tuner
  other than portability?

QRP autotune -- the KAT500 is optimized for high power, and doesn't
autotune very well below about 10W.

Re: [Elecraft] Tuner Loss question

2014-02-11 Thread tom armour
Why do you need to know the loss of the tuner? Put a power meter after the
tuner and see what your rig is putting out.
Is this the type of chart you are looking
for?http://www.packetradio.com/pdfzips/SWRvsPowerNwatts.pdf
It is not really the tuner that is causing the loss. It is more the feed line.

You can test this by using an external tuner and placing a watt meter both in
front and behind the tuner and see what kind of loss you are getting.
Yes the tuner will have loss, but relatively negligible.

I have lots of data in the loss to be expected in Coax or Open wire when
running at higher SWR into a multiband antenna - however, I do NOT have
any real world data on the losses to be expected in a tuner system at
 higher SWR.

 So:

Are there any numbers available on what additional losses my Elecraft K3
(SN 5283) antenna tuner will experience when the SWR is high - say about
5:1 or higher when feeding a multiband antenna with 50 Ohm coax on 20
meters? Should I expect another 3 dB down in signal strength during
receive - and also Transmit? Or are the losses higher or lower then that?
Also, are the losses frequency dependent (like on coax) or are they the
 same across the bands.

 Thanks for any available data.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 to KAT500

2014-01-24 Thread tom armour
ThanksGreat input so far!It is really helping me finalize my decision.

A few more notes/questions:I have an old tube amp (fl-2100) that does about
600w max I intend to use until I get the money together for a KPA500.
I currently use a manual tuner that I could potentially put in line if I want
to run QRP.I do not intend to move the K3 a lot. I have another radio I can
use portable.

With the old amp should I have an AUX cable? or is the RCA cables
Rig-KAT500-Amp enough?

Apart from Jim's advice below, I would supplement as follows:

 1. If you have no intention to take K3 as portable use or your K3 is a
station rig, I would go for KAT500. This will give you the future liberty of
buying a KPA500 or other linear amplifier.
 2. Once you have a linear, the internal KAT3 tuner will become redundant.
In fact, I sold the KAT3 to subsidize the purchase of KAT500. I am using KX3
 for portable use.

A 1/4 wave long folded radiator has a feed point resistance of 4x the
