Alan Bloom explained the effect you are seeing on 14, Apr. 2013. You can look
in the “Earlier messages” and find his post.

It is essentially the same as Fred answered you with.

Thanks everyone, and Ed. I have re-read the older posts and understand what is
happening now.

[Elecraft] [P3] Use with K3.

2013-05-04 Thread Alan Hawrylyshen
All;

I have a question about whether or not this is normal behavior and if it is, an
explanation for the differences I'm perceiving will help me feel less
inadequate about my knowledge here.

After following the guidelines in the K3 and P3 manuals, I've calibrated the
S-Meter on the K3 and the level calibration on the P3 (using an XG3 as the
signal source). I notice that regardless of what I seem to do, the S meter
reads 1-2 S units higher on the K3 than on the P3 'peak envelope' display. Is
something amiss, am I misinterpreting things, or is there something I should
check for?

I have SMTR MD nor. SMTR PK Off. (but have tried with on).

The K3 S-meter displays no bars with antenna disconnected and S-2 at 1uV and
S-9 at 50uV as expected. The factory default settings for the calibration
values more or less 'just worked'.
The transfer gain in the P3 is set to -10bBm IIRC.

Comments or thoughts anyone?

Thanks
Alan

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Use with K3.

2013-05-04 Thread Fred Jensen
Alan, your results sound about like mine. I calibrated my S-meter [I
use the ABS mode] using my service monitor and then calibrated the P3.
you didn't say, but if you're comparing signals on the air, there is
going to be a difference.

The P3 averages, I believe the minimum is 2 samples, mine's set at 4,
and depending on the span you're using, the pixel BW on the P3 can be
much less than the BW your K3 is currently at. That's just inherent in
the math of the FFT that produces the spectrum and WF displays. In the
end, you can't argue with mathematics. :-)

You may have nothing at all wrong and may have done everything right.
