Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
Since you brought this up, I will post a link to my analysis of the knockoff "TCXOs" for the Kenwoods. You do get what you pay for, and you can't even buy good parts for what they charge. The added phase noise of the Chinese parts increases the phase noise of the TX by about 10 dB 15 kHz away. It also is full of spurs. Basically, if you were on a DXpedition with 100W, you would splatter and interfere like you had a kilowatt. By the way, the K3S with the new synthesizer is even better in this regard. It is at least 20 dB lower which would be more like if you had 1 W. Only the good RX filters in the Kenwood radio prevent degradation in RMDR on most bands. They basically made a really bad synthesizer, and made it look like a TCXO. There is a lot more to it than just being on frequency 73, W7MLG On Nov 2, 2016 3:05 PM, "Michael Walker"wrote: > I bought a TCXO on ebay for my TS480 (SO-3). It's not always a simple "pop". If equipped with a KRX3 sub receiver, it also involves disconnecting a bunch of cables and removing the KRX3 enclosure to see the main K3S filters, then opening the KRX3 enclosure itself to see what filters the sub rx has. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- "Pop the top"! "Elecraft Inside!", to borrow Intel's old line. But seriously, people just spent circa $3K-$4K USD (new) on a high performance radio and then go this route on a fairly critical component? Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
What are you trying to accomplish by buying the new filter? If it is to help avoid rx overload from a kilowatt next door, you might need one. Otherwise, the DSP filters can do the job just fine. The ONLY reason to have the crystal filters on receive is to strip any monster signals before they can overload any subsequent circuits in the receiver, but the K3/K3S have excellent dynamic range. 73,Ron AC7AC >> I am tempted to try one of the Chinese made filters listed for sale on >> Ebay. Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
I bought a TCXO on ebay for my TS480 (SO-3). I installed it and then put the RF deck in the oven and then outside (it was winter). I went through the Alignment calibration to see how far it drifted. I can't remember the exact number, but it was within limits in terms of PPM. Which was great, as my TS480 sits outside all winter on the remote base and that is as low as -30C at times. It has been there for 7 years now (or more). For me, it was as test for $30 including shipping direct to my door. It looked exactly like the SO-3 @ $135 plus shipping. So, before you declare the entire electronics world as poison, you do need to do your homework. Don't forget, this is an experimental hobby. One of the fun things I got to help with at a summer job was an acceptance test of a filter for aircraft use. We bolted that poor little filter to a huge shake table, then checked the group delay under vibration. It did not pass. Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
Hi all, so again: 1. I never bought these filters from China on eBay! 2. I just found them on eBay and I was disgusted a few weeks ago so I posted the warning message to others over here on the list in order to not waste their money as I am pretty sure these filters are poor quality! 3. As I mentioned today again I never spend single cent for junks on eBay like these filters. I do not want to degrade my top quality K3 by chinese knock-offs! 4. Please read carefully the post from Wayne, N6KR as he mentioned all what I meant perfectly. THANK YOU WAYNE FOR YOUR BRILIANT EXPLANATION. Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
Ya, I would not want to invest that much money in an Elecraft and take a gunshot approach with accessories. I pay for what I get. And… I have some exceptional Elecraft equipment on the desk, in the shack, in the go-bag and one currently at Don’s place. I always take the approach to buy what I can afford but sometimes… I do spend more to get something exceptional. Wayne, Eric, Don, thanks for all your help over the years and for building exceptional equipment, as well as exceptional support. Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
FYI: You can't screen crystals just with a VNA. And it isn't just about Q. Crystals have physical IMD properties that are highly dependent on signal injection level. We have to screen the crystals over a range of signal levels individually, first, then again when they're assembled into a filter. The crystals also have to be burned in, or they can rapidly age when installed in the radio and develop undesirable properties down the road. There can be issues with electrodes, dust, etc., unless the crystal manufacturer is held to a high standard. 73, Wayne N6KR On Nov 2, 2016, at 10:43 AM, Michael Walkerwrote: > If are willing to invest $50, then go ahead. Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay
Hi Petr, We go to great lengths to ensure performance of our K3/K3S crystal filters. First we 100% screen the crystals, testing them individually for electrical and physical IMD, activity level, Q, and center frequency. We then burn in, test and screen the finished filters. Finally, we label them clearly with the offset parameters required to set up the firmware. Lacking this final step, you could have filters that are not correctly centered. We also provide matched-frequency filters on request. At the prices shown for these unauthorized knock-offs, you couldn't even buy the high-quality crystals themselves, much less put together and properly test the filters. Caveat emptor. If are willing to invest $50, then go ahead. He does have a return policy. Next, I would buy, beg, borrow a VNA and sweep them. That is the only way to be sure. It is hard to read his scans/sweeps. They Q factor looks a little soft, but usable. If the soldering is poor, that is an easy fix. Just redo them. I'm sure they will work ok. They won't do any damage to your radio.
