(n/h) failed to respond during subsequent rounds.) We had a total of 5 check ins this week (including the NCS). There were a few staunch souls that managed to get through the horrendous lightning static that was blanketing the Midwest. I hope to see all of you again. The net concluded at 09:21 PM ET. Sorry for the abbreviated version of the net. Hopefully things will be much quieter next Sunday evening. We have a really great group of folks checking in, and I encourage everyone in the Midwest and adjoining areas to check in next week. As a reminder, if you go to https://netlogger.org at the net starting time and look for the 80M Elecraft SSB Net, you should see the frequency we are using that evening, if we must QSY again due to busy frequencies. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I hope to see all of you again. The net concluded at 10:00 PM ET. I'd like to call out VP2MDX, Thaire, from Montserrat, as quite possibly our first DX check in to the 80M Elecraft SSB Net. I hope to hear more far-flung stations check in, if possible. We have a really great group of folks checking in, and I encourage anyone in the Midwest and adjoining areas to try to check in next week.

Signals came in strong after the initial check ins, then faded a bit during the 73 round. Thanks to the relay stations for the assists this evening. Very nice hearing from the new check ins and in particular from KD9YVJ who was using the gutters on his house for his antenna and the first check in from WX0MIK using a Collins 30L-1 amplifier! I hope to see all of you again. The net concluded at 9:42 PM ET. We have a really great group of folks checking in, and I encourage anyone in the Midwest and adjoining areas to try to check in next week. Also, a couple of stations have complained of a 'roaring' noise (like a foreign broadcast jamming station) on our planned frequency of 3806 kHz, so I decided to find an alternate frequency this evening, which is how we ended up on 3824 kHz. Brian, K1NW, reported that 3803 kHz was free of the noise, and that the folks that meet there just prior to 9pm ET have been closing their net promptly at 9pm, so I propose we try 3803 kHz next week. The net concluded at 9:48 PM ET. A shout out to the folks that checked in with classic TenTec equipment (a first in my memory of being NCS of this net), and in particular, Bart, in Murfreesboro, TN, my old stomping ground. I got my Novice license there when I was in high school in 1970. We have a really great group of folks checking in, and I encourage anyone in the Midwest and adjoining areas to try to check in next week. We also experimented with the Utah SDR#1, and were able to hear a number of us on the SDR. Later, other stations in the western half of the US covered us up on the SDR, although we couldn't hear them direct here in the Midwest. Also, a couple of stations complained of a 'roaring' noise (like an open mic) on the frequency, which we decided was likely foreign broadcast (or jamming of a foreign broadcast - take your pick). If this persists, we may yet have to go looking for another frequency. I couldn't hear it at my QTH in Ann Arbor, MI, due to a persistent S7 noise floor, here. The net concluded at 9:44 PM ET. In spite of the recent frequency change, the turnout continues to be very encouraging. We ended up on 3810 kHz tonight because there was another net on 3807 kHz. I asked if 3810 kHz was clear about 850pm, and a station came back and said that there was a group that met there starting at 10pm. I said that we would clear off before 10pm and we did secure the net at 944pm. I did listen to the follow-on net for a while, and there was considerable discussion about letting a net use 'their' frequency, and one station was complaining that he couldn't police their frequency all the time to make sure that it would be free when the group wanted to use it. Seems this group shows up sometime after dinner time and talks sometimes until 6am! They also noted that a Flex net came on earlier on 3810 kHz, and were told by some other station that the frequency was 'in use', so they moved down to 3807 kHz (which of course, caused us to move somewhere else). I've also noted that sometime after the net started that 3803 kHz became clear. I continue to monitor adjacent frequencies to see if we can find another one close by that will work better for everyone. In the meantime we will continue to attempt to meet on 3806 kHz. Hope to see you next week! 73, -- Dave, N8SBE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Most signals were good all around, except a couple of barefoot stations. For the most part, 80M was in fair condition overall. Many thanks to the relay stations for pulling those stations in and making them part of the net. Very nice hearing from the new check ins and hope to see all of you again. The net concluded at 9:39 PM ET. In spite of the recent frequency change, the turnout continues to be encouraging. Brian, K1NW, was dealing with some loud noise on frequency that he was able to help control by setting his manual notch to 330 Hz and using NR on his K4D. It was also noted that sometime after the pre-net started that 3803 kHz became clear. I continue to monitor adjacent frequencies to see if we can find another one close by that will work better for everyone. In the meantime we will continue to meet on 3806 kHz. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Ed, Yes, you are correct with your estimates of typical range on 80M. It does get better in the winter, where lightning noise which can propagate many hundreds of miles on 80M at night all but disappears. Yes, a 2nd West Coast net would be nice. I haven't heard anyone step up yet to host such a net. Frankly, I ended up with this gig, because the previous net control went MIA (I think he got a job overseas), and I guess I just took over the reigns. I don't have a monster contest-style station by any stretch of the imagination, and if someone else with a better station situation wanted to give it a try, I certainly wouldn't stand in their way. Having said that, I can say I appreciate the opportunity to serve in some capacity, and it has given me good experience as a net control of an informal net, and I'm sure others would enjoy the experience. Maybe you'd like to start an AK-local 80M Elecraft SSB Net, to capture those in your area that are using/running or are interested in working Elecraft stations on the air? 73, -- Dave, N8SBE On 2023-11-13 11:45, Ed Cole wrote: Often read the reports from Elecraft Nets and kind of wondered what the "usual" maximum range for stations on the 80m SSB Net? I'm in southcentral AK so do not expect to ever hear the net which appears centered on MI (I was K8MWA 1958-1968 in MI). Late night 80m prop often brings in West Coast stations (W7 and W6) so that would suggest a couple thousand miles. Normal daytime 80m is about 400 miles up here. Also seems as a West Coast 80m net could co-exist with the current Elecraft 80m SSB Net. Be nice if NC were located in NW (Seattle?) as that might reach us 1300 miles to the north. I have checked in the 20m SSB Net in the past with 100w and 3-element yagi at 50-foot. Building a 1200w linear this winter (might improve chances??). I mostly do VHF-SSB or EME but with the great cycle-25 might enjoy what it brings in! 73, Ed - KL7UW https://www.kl7uw.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to n8...@densbe.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Jim, Yes, sorry about that. We used to meet in the General class portion of the band some time ago, but kept getting chased off of various frequencies due to the overcrowding with nets and skeds in that portion of the band. I'm open to anyone that can find us an open frequency in the General class portion of the 80M band at 9pm ET on Sundays. Since I'm already involved in attempting to run the net on 3784 kHz, it's difficult for me to be actively looking for openings elsewhere during the net time. Kind of a catch-22. Also, there is no one single source of registered nets, or else we might easily solve the problem that way. Yes, there is the ARRL Net Directory, but that leans towards NTS and similar nets. Netlogger, which we use for the 80M net, also shows other nets running at the same time, including their frequencies, but it is by no means all-inclusive, either. I'd really like to be as inclusive as possible, and that would mean meeting in the General portion of the band. Ideas, anyone? 73, -- Dave, N8SBE On 2023-06-19 11:26, Jim Good wrote: Dave, N8SBE, As a General Class operator, this net would be very interesting to attempt to join. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Steve, Yes, it is always at 9PM ET. We go by local time instead of UTC, and always keep to 9PM ET daylight time or not. There a great many 'local' nets on 80M, so if we changed the time going to daylight time or back, we end up crashing into other nets on the same frequency. I would, however, entertain someone finding us a spot in the General class portion of the band, so more folks can participate. We ended up on the current frequency after have been chased off of a couple of other frequencies in the General class subband. Hope to hear you next Sunday evening, local time. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE On 2023-06-07 12:01, Steven Stuckey wrote: Dave, Is this net always at 01:00 on Sunday evenings? Like I said operator error, which I only figured out after reloading all the firmware, and I came within a hair's breath of resetting the radio to factory default, but somehow at that point it dawned on me what was going on, especially because all the other bands were operating 'normally'. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Karl, We usually do have a pre-net call up, sometimes as much as 15 minutes early, and several of the stations last night were running 'barefoot' (100W), some into EFHW wire antennas, so please don't despair. Since I was having antenna issues last night, I ended up running barefoot myself, and most stations could still hear me. I'm using an inverted Vee configuration of a ZS6BKW dipole which is fed with window line and coax, and tuned at the far end by the tuner in my K3s (or KAT500 when running the KPA500). We also have a couple or more stations that are looking out for stations to relay into the net, one of which is in northern GA, so he should be able to hear you. Please give us another try next Sunday, and we'll try extra hard to listen up for weak signals. The band was pretty quiet last night, and if that keeps up, we should be successful. See you next week, -- Dave, N8SBE On 2023-02-06 09:45, Karl W Hubbard wrote: Hi Dave, I finally rigged up a Buckmaster 7 band OCF dipole to replace the inadequate 80m low band coil vertical hoping that I could make a QSO. The problem is my KX3, KPA100 and PX3 at 100W get steamrolled by all these KPA500s and 1500s out there. I can receive but get lost in the pileup and don't know if my sigal is even strong enough. Is there any way you could reserve a brief "quiet period" call out where only those running portable and/or 100W or less could try to call in before opening up the net to the big guns? Maybe 5 minutes before 9:00 for example? The best I can hope for is to see if you could at least receive my call sign, as obvioulsy I could not sustain any QSO anyway and I think there would be very few call-ins in this "category" 73's Karl AF5LQ (costal NC) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I have a couple of contesters within a few miles of me who were obliterating many kHz of the 160 band in this week's CQ CW contest. One has a Yaesu 1000D with 5+ kHz of phase noise, the other has a 1000MP with discrete spurs over at least 10 kHz. Of course they both run big amps. Another guy 50 miles away looked like he was sending MCW. If the photo of his shack on QRZ is to be believed, he's running an Omni6 + amp. [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Regarding some of the net and QRM issues mentioned in the attached post, the ARRL Volunteer Monitor organization can easily deal with deliberate interference to nets. Remember, NO ONE or NO ORGANIZATION owns any frequency on any band. Likewise, hams who have a Tech or General class license are very easy hunting when operating in the Advanced or Extra frequency segment of any band. A good operator, selecting 3 kHz above or below any net is good operating practice. For those that insist on transmitting wide band audio, do so at your on risk. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/30/2023 12:30 PM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Message: 23 Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2023 12:30:17 -0600 From: "Dave New, N8SBE" To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Steve, Yeah, we got chased away from 3775 by a persistent adjacent GA net meeting at the same time on 3778. Rather than start a cat-fight on the air (or by email) we decided the batter part of valor was to move elsewhere. 3784 kHz has been good for us the last several weeks, but last night at least a half-hour before our net time, there was a conversation going on there between two stations, one of which was signing an "F6" (France) call sign, so my guess is they were speaking French, which is not my forte, by any stretch of the imagination. It turned out that 3781 was clear, and remained so for us, so we moved down 3 kHz and operated the net there. I've been using (mis-using?) Netlogger, and when I start up the net, I post the current frequency, so if you go to the Netlogger site during net time, you should be able to find us quite easily. I'd really like to move us into the General portion of the band, so more folks can join in, but that's a tough job on 80 meters, even on a Sunday. Generally that portion of the band is wall-to-wall with nets and scheduled conversations (old friends, etc) during the evening hours all days of the week. The ARRL net directory is not very friendly for searches, like "what frequencies are NOT in use in the General portion of the band on Sundays at 9pm ET". Suggestions for how to solve that mystery are welcome (I do have a P3, and know how to use it, just to head off the more obvious replies). 73, -- Dave, N8SBE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Rats! I worked all day having set up my Buckmaster 7 Band OCF today after having taken two weeks to construct my tennis ball antenna launcher. The Buckmaster how is sub optimal because I had to connect 2 50' coaxes and while the apex of the V is high enough and the ends of both arms were easily elevated more than 10 feet, and the end points with downward slopes of the max 20 degrees, the arms had to be angled 70 degrees horizontally and thus not linear and so probably it is compromised some what, but it really is the best I could do with my lot. Haven't tried an end fed. At least I won't have to put and take down my Buddipole Vertcial, plus I enjoy the multibands 10-80. My SWR was 1.3 at 80 m, which was actually one of the best, and certainly no problem for my KPAX100 ATU. Anyway, I could certainly hear those usurpers who were on 3.784. (Italian?) but the proof is in the ability to TX. My suggestion would be from now on to list a minimum of three frequencies, i.e., two defaults. BTW, my FCC license is up for renewal next month. I looked into it and tried changing my address from Natchez MS to here in the coast of NC. Is the site working? Is there a fee? I couldn't figure it out. Government. Agency. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
Karl, Sorry we missed you. 80M on a short vertical can be challenging, since the efficiency is so low, the ERP will only be a small fraction of the power applied to the antenna. If you can find any way to get a wire in the air, the longer the better. It doesn't have to be full-size 1/2 wave for 80M (130 ft). I use a ZS6BKW in an inverted vee configuration with the center up about 35 feet on a telescoping mast which is bracketed to the back of the house. The wires when viewed from the top are only about 90 degrees apart, with one leg going SE and the going SW, tied off to the corners of the back yard of my small city corner lot. The ZS6BKW is about 100 ft long, but when the legs are sloped down from the center point, it doesn't need all of that almost 50 feet in each direction. The ZS6BKW is fed with about 30 ft. of window line, which then transitions to 50-ohm coax without a balun. It's recommended to use about 75 ft. of coax to the transmitter at that point, and then you can use a tuner at the transmitter to make the transmitter happy. I use this antenna mainly on 80M and 40M, having a 2 el. quad for 20M-6M. Yes, the SWR on the coax is somewhat high, but despite what a lot of folks will tell you, you really don't lose a lot of power in that piece of coax at 3.8 MHz. The result is that I get a respectable signal out on 80M with that setup, running barefoot 100W with my K3s, or in summer conditions on 80M with a lot of summer static, my KPA500 helps to make myself heard over the QRN. Hope this gives you some ideas. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE On 2023-01-09 20:29, Karl W Hubbard wrote: Hi gang. I tried making QSO last night but missed my last week's savior relay on RI. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report
I have a similar sized lot and am located in a city. Antennas are everything on HF and the bigger the better. I tried just about everything but eventually sprung for a rooftop tower and a SteppIr 3 element. Huge improvement. Much better than a dipole. I hear the hex beam antennas work pretty well, are less intrusive and don't require as much in the way of a tower or rotor. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Karl W Hubbard via Elecraft Sent: Monday, January 9, 2023 6:30 PM To: Dave New, N8SBE ; Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Report Hi gang.
