[Elecraft] Hard case for K3
Wanted to thank everyone who responded to my inquiry about a hard case for the K3. I ended up purchasing the Harbor Freight #69315 ((18 X 13 X 6). It runs $25 and ended up being exactly what I was looking for; certainly not what you would want for shipping, but perfect to take your K3 to FD, amateur radio demonstrations, etc., and if it is a second radio, a place to keep it in the house where it will be free of dust and dirt. I haven't purchased the foam I will need to pad the edges and top, but it will not take too much. If anyone else is contemplating purchasing a case at a reasonable price, this one fills the bill. One word of caution, the case has a removable tool holder in the top. When removed, there are two metal tabs located at the bottom of the lid (used to hold the tool holder). To prevent damage to the K3 case, you need to remove them. I just pried them out with a screwdriver. Once removed, I found they were held in by two of the four rivets used to secure the lid to the case.All I needed to do was place the rivet heads on the back of the case (protruding from the hinges) on the back of a vice. Then using a hammer, I pounded the rivets that were holding the metal tabs flat. Dick, I'm using the DX-Pedition Bag from Rose Kopp. You can take the Bag with K3 and some other stuff as a Cabin Luggage! Every year I'm going to activate EU031 and this Bag with the K3 is with me on the Plain and also on some Ferry's. A lot of people have used various Pelican Cases which apparently give good protection at a moderate price. I elected to buy an aluminum case from Home Depot which they have for about $20. This case has ample room and is adequate for Field Day and such, but airline travelers might prefer the better protection of the Pelican. One wife of one of the members makes some cloth covers and dust covers which a lot of K3 owners like and I think they can be customized to your liking, but probably are not the best for rough handling. Some may prefer to double protect with the cloth cover and an outer Pelican Case for more severe handling problems. I use an old projector case, from an early generation computer projector. You might also explore what the music stores sell for transporting musical gear such as mixers and other sound processing gear, and see what might be adapted for your use. Musicians have been hauling sensitive gear around for decades. Look for heavy duty road cases. Pelican case. Pick the case size depending on what else you want to carry in it.
