Re: [Elecraft] K2 CW test mode
David: Unlike most of the people on this mailing list, my CW sending skill is very poor. So I have bought a paddle and am practicing regularly. One thing I have found with my K2 (S/N 5492) is that the CW test mode will sound a continuous note with both paddles pressed. This happens intermittently and in mode A or B. I have been using speeds around 15 to 20 wpm. The answer is to set the power down to minimum and use a dummy load - which I have been doing and the problem hasn't happened. I suspect its a firmware issue since the display is being a bit more active than usual flashing the 'c' character, than when normally transmitting. More an observation than a problem that must be fixed. Check to see if you might have AUTO DETECT enabled: Auto Detect can be turned off if desired. Find the INP menu entry, the parameter, then tap DISPLAY to select ADET OFF. With A DET enabled, if you happen to manage to close BOTH the DIT and DAH paddles at precisely the same time, the K2 'thinks' it has an external (non-paddle) keying device attached (as shown in the Fig 8-1 illustration in the most recent K2 manual (page 95) and will generate to continuous output carrier (and sidetone) until the paddles are released. Re: [Elecraft] K2 CW test mode
As others have replied, this is normal with the auto-detect circuit. The flashing c is an indication that you are in test mode. It's handy in case you might wonder why nobody answers your calls :^) 73 - Bob, N7XY On Nov 15, 2006, at 3:59 PM, David wrote: Hello All, Unlike most of the people on this mailing list, my CW sending skill is very poor. Re: [Elecraft] K2 CW TEST mode, and KX1 CW test
For the KX1 just tune outside the ham bands by a few KHz. The unit won't transmit but the sidetone oscillator still operates. Seems to work great for a little CW practice. (Some of us need a LOT of CW practice.) Grif, KF4JG - Original Message - From: John R. Re: [Elecraft] K2 CW TEST mode
Thanks everyone. Dummy load is attached and practice has commenced. I'm really surprised at how quickly I can duplicate the sounds of each letter using the paddle and keyer. It must be much more difficult to get the timing correct with a straight key. I'm using K7Q0 (Chuck Adams) mp3 disk. I also have G4FON's Koch method trainer, but K7QO's is much more portable.
