Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-mini and FT8/Q65 / Remoterig

2023-03-16 Thread Scott Townley

I didn't find a simple way.

Assuming you have the remoterig set up for SSB/voice, what I did was to
route the soundcard TX audio to the mic input on the radio RR.  To do
that I used an old Rigblaster, which allowed me to easily switch the AF
input to the RR between mic and soundcard. There are many ways to do
this cheaper but I had the Rigblaster gathering dust.

As to RX audio, I used the SPKR output on the side of the K3/0-mini.
That means switching between soundcard RX audio and a speaker/headset
for human RX.  Or you could come up with a similar switching arrangement
as with TX audio.

[Elecraft] K3/0 mini N1MM+ not sending CW from function keys

2022-06-23 Thread Jorge Diez - CX6VM
Hello

I have a remote connection, K3/100, K3/0 mini connected with remoterig boxes

It was working perfectly. I needed to format the control laptop. Installed
Windows 10 again and all software.

I can do SSB and digital, also I can send CW with paddles, BUT I cannot
send CW with N1MM+ function keys

RRC1258 Com0 (Com3)

In N1MM+/config COM3 is configured "CW/Other", and set "DTR to CW".

the RR Control unit. Under IO settings, "USB DTR as CW" to be "COM0"

in the K3 CONFIG, PTT KEY = OFF OFF

I think this settings are correct, but N1MM+`s function keys are not
sending CW to the radio

any idea what to check?

thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini and P3

Remoterig does not support the P3/SVGA nor does Elecraft offer a remote option
for the P3.I have the K3/0-Mini along with the K3-KPA-500-KAT500-P3 at my
ham shack in southeast Georgia.

I’m aware of two options for ’seeing’ the P3 remotely:

1. Install a video capture board in the ham shack computer and camera aimed at
the P3 and then view the P3 by accessing the ham shack computer to see the
video. However, I’m not aware of any currently available video capture boards
per se. You’d have to search to see if these are still available. This
approach has been discussed in the past on this reflector, but it has been
awhile since anyone has posted anything about it.

2. Use the IF output from the back of the P3 and connect a SDR receiver (such
as SDRPlay devices), install the appropriate SDR software on the ham shack
computer, and install OmniRig to have the software track the frequency of the
K3/100. I have done this with SDRPlay's SDRduo running their SDRuno software
that has the ‘hooks’ for OmniRig. It is then possible to view a spectrum
display running available through the SDRuno that will replicate what the P3
can show directly. When I turn on the RX ANT on the K3/0-Mini, it allows
OmniRig to interface between the K3 and the SDRuno software and subsequently as
I change frequencies/bands on the K3, the SDRuno software follows along. I can
also set the frequency of the K3 by specifying the frequency within SDRuno
software.

While I’ve done this with SDRPlay hardware and software (I already had the
SDRduo in my shack before trying this), presumably the same thing can be done
with “SDR dongles” such as NooElec using other SDR programs such as SDR Sharp,
SDR Console, etc. However, I don’t know if these packages provide the OmniRig
interface to ensure that the spectrum display is controlled by the K3. SDRPlay
also offers single tuner SDR devices (SDRduo is a dual-tuner) such as the RSP1A
and RSPdx. See: www.sdrplay.com .

Bottom line is that the “work around” is to have a PC in the shack that can
utilize a SDR device (connected via USB) with an IF input coming from the P3
that can subsequently be controlled by the K3 to show a spectrum display. This
means you’ll also have to connect to the PC in the shack through remote
software such as VNC Viewer (from RealVNC.com ) or another
package such as TeamViewer. The SDRplay website does have generic
documentation and videos on how to connect HF transceivers to their SDRs and
how to configure SDRuno so that the SDR can provide a spectrum display (As I
recall, they use the Kenwood 570G as their example). See:

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini and P3

2022-06-09 Thread Julia Tuttle
I'm not sure that's possible. RemoteRig relays serial control traffic and
audio input and output, but panadapters require a separate, broader band
signal (IF for the P3, AF for the PX3) from the rig.

This used to work, back in the K3/0 non-mini days. You'd connect the
two using a null-modem cable, and invoke "terminal mode" with a long
press (~5 seconds) of the MENU button. The manual for the "mini" is a
bit vague, but it looks like its connection to the RRC box is TTL, not
RS232, so to connect that to a K3 directly might require a level
converter interface.

The issue is how to get all of the connections from the K3/0-Mini to the K3.
The “Elecraft K3-Remote Owner’s Manual” (Revision D, April 3, 2014) discusses
two methods of installing the K3-Remote variants:

1. Via the RemoteRig 1258MKII approach that connects to your personal K3 at the
ham shack and a second RemoteRig to the K3-Remote. This is what I’ve done.

2. Using the K3-Remote via a PC through a USB connection. This is meant to
provide access to on-line remote Ham rig services such as “Remote Hams’. I
have no idea what interface(s) are installed at these sites to their K3s.

I don’t know whether the two Remote Rigs would work directly connected through
a reverse cable, you’d probably have to connect both to a LAN where both
devices would be assigned a local IP address (either static or dynamic).

[Elecraft] K3/0 Mini - Local Connection

2020-08-19 Thread David Bondy
I read some discussion on this a while ago but could not find if it was ever
resolved.

If I wanted to connect my K3/0 Mini locally to my K3, can it be done just by a
cable (or cables) without having to use a pair of RemoteRig 1258MKIIs?

My K3 is in a rack a little distance away from my ideal operating position and
the K3/0 Mini sits nicely on my desk but it seems a bit of a faff to have to
use the two RR boxes connected via an ethernet cable.

Anyone know whether there was ever a plan for a ‘local’ remote connection?

[Elecraft] K3/0 Mini and Win4K3 -- digital remote operation

2020-07-15 Thread Darryl Hazelgren
I am posting this message on the Remoterig forum as well as sending it to
Elecraft (and anywhere else I can think of) to try to make some headway.

In short: I wish to operate digital modes from my control station to my remote
station using K3 Twin mode of Remoterig setup (K3/0 Mini and K3 100). Have been
using the setup for eight years using CW and SSB. Want to add Win4K3 to the
control side. Want to (continue to) run N1MM+, DXLab Suite and add WSJT
software on the control side.

Can this be done?

I also so have a Rigblaster that I can add to the mix. Do I need that or any
other hardware or software?

Below is an email sent to Tom at Win4K3 along with his response.

Subject: Help with K3/0 remote setup

Good morning Tom.

I have been successfully running a remote station using an Elecraft K3 at the
remote site and Elecraft K3/0, K3/0 Mini and K3 100 rigs at the control site in
my condo, which is about 15 miles away from the remote site, for about eight
years. I am using Remoterig RRC 1258 MkII boxes in the twin mode. Software is
current.

I run a KPA1500 which I control with the KPA1500 remote software. All antenna
switching and rotating of Yagis is done with Green Heron and Array Solutions
hardware and software.

I am a DXer and Contester (Phone and CW) using N1MM+ and DXLab Suites.

Now I want to start with the digital modes.

The computers on both sides are Windows 10 with latest updates. I downloaded
the latest Com0Com software and created three pairs for use with N1MM+, DXLab
and WSJT.

I downloaded the current Win4K3 app and began the setup. I am unable to advance
beyond the Settings screen as I cannot get the K3/0 Mini drop down to connect.
I have tried the virtual Com ports created by the Remoterig install app. I have
connected to the USB port on the K3/0 Mini and verified that I have the latest
version of software in the K3/0 Mini and noted the two ports the Mini uses. I
have tried to connect via those. No joy.

The last two pages of the instruct me to: "Save the settings and then from the
Tools menu on the radio control screen pick "Enable K3 / 0”. I cannot get to
the next screen to access the Tools menu.

What am I missing?

I have friends using Win4K3 and they love it. I’m looking forward to joining
them...

Answer from Tom, VA2FSQ:

Hi
I do not have a remote rig so I am not sure how this works.
However, before you can go to the other connections, you must have win4k3
working and connected. Win4k3 uses pretty well all k3 commands including some
undocumented ones for the k30 and I cannot say for sure of this will work with
remote rig. I will say, you cannot connect to the radio with any virtual ports
unless it is properly managed by remote rig. All other connections have to be
through win4k3.

I know that others have responded to your query, but allow me to make some
additional points.

1. I presume that you purchased the remoterig from Elecraft and that you have
the RemoteRig cables from Elecraft to connect the remoterig not only to the
K3/0-mini but the remote rig to the K3. These cables provide the critical
interconnects needed for the K3/0-mini to function properly. The K3/0-mini
manual does a nice job of explaining how to make the proper connections.

2. I use a y-adapter to connect the remoterig PTT cable to the PTT port of the
K3 so that the PTT switch I use at the K3 will still function. There is no
problem having both PTTs connected at the same time. This will allow the K3 go
to into transmit by command of the remoterig or by the handswitch at the shack.

3. I use a stereo y-adapter to connect the Remoterig Audio cable to the
Speaker port of the K3 so that audio will be fed to both outputs. This setup
does cause my external speakers at the station to change volume when remote
operating as it also provides audio to the Remoterig. In other words, the AF
volume on the K3/0-mini will control both audio outputs. Since I’m not at the
station when operating remote and no one is around, having the speakers active
doesn’t bother anyone. If the K3 is located where audio might bother others,
then either turn off the speakers (if they’re powered) or install a cutoff
switch/unplug the speaker(s).

4. Keep in mind that the K3/0-mini controls what the K3 is doing as the
K3/0-mini front panel is duplicating what the K3 is showing on its panel. That
is, as you increase audio on the K3, it is also potentially increasing audio of
speakers at the shack. If you set a parameter on the K3/0-mini, it is
displaying what the K3 front panel is showing as that adjustment is made. One
area to note is how microphone management is done. The Remoterig uses the rear
mic connector of the K3. Thus, on the K3/0-mini, you must use the K3 Menu to
set the mic source to the rear connector. If the mic connected to the
K3/0-mini needs bias, you set that through the remoterig configuration. In
other words, mic selection through the K3 menu has nothing to do with the mic
input of the K3/0-mini itself; rather it determines the mic input used by the
K3 itself. Both the 8-pin connector on the front panel of the K3/0-mini and
the side Mic connector are active. Thus, mic selection using the K3/0-mini
does determine whether the mic input is from the Remoterig (rear mic) or from
the K3 itself (front mic).

5. Management of the KAT500 and KPA500 can be done several different ways.
Clearly, basic operation of both units will work the same as before if the
appropriate cable connections are installed as described in the Elecraft
manuals. One can use a remote connection to a PC in the shack and use the
Elecraft utilities. I prefer to manage the KPA500 with the Remoterig RC-1216H
which provides a web-based display of the KPA500 front panel and is connected
to the amplifier through a RS-232 connection. This allows me to manage the
amplifier with any PC, Mac, iOS device, etc. I have port forwarding set up at
the station so that I can access the RC-1216H directly. As the RS-232
connection is attached to the RC-1216H, I cannot use the KPA500 utility from
the shack computer. However, I don’t see that as a problem.

The KAT500 can be managed using the PC in the shack and then remotely
connecting to the shack computer to manage the KAT500 running on the shack
computer. I manage the KAT500 one of two ways. I’ve installed a
serial-to-ethernet converter (Lantronics) which allows me to directly connect
to the KAT500 remotely and run the KAT500 utility on the PC where I am. Or, I
can have the PC in the shack connect to that same serial-to-ethernet converter
and run the KAT500 software on that machine. In this instance, I use VNC
Connect to access the shack computer using any PC, Mac, iOS device, etc.
Sidenote: If I didn’t have the RC-1216H, I’d probably be managing the KPA500
the same way.

6. Lastly, please keep in mind that if you’re intending to remotely operate
from a significant distance from the shack, it is imperative that you test
e

All 15 pin Y cables are not the same. You need to have all 15 pins
connected from end to end. VGA cables will NOT work.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini

2019-12-24 Thread kb2mjeff
Hi Mike. I sold my K0 setup a few months ago. It worked perfectly for years,
but wanted to bring my K3 with me for the winter so I replaced it with a remote
IC-7300. While up there for the summer I used to switch to remote mode when I
went to the shore for the weekend, if I remember right there were three
connections to change. The PTT from foot switch to the remoterig box, the
audio from local speaker to remoterig box, and the serial connection to local
PC to the remoterig box. This took about a minute to switch over. I f I wanted
to use the AMP and tuner I had to leave a local PC on running TeamViewer.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini

Hi all

So I have a K3/0 Mini with the remoterig setup. My station is a K3, P3, KAT500
and KPA500. I want to be able to keep it all hooked up while installing the
remoterig system. Is it possible to do this? It looks like I need to
disconnect the ACC CABLE going to the KPA500 along with the RS232 line so the
remoterig can be used. That pretty much disables the rest of the station. Am I
missing something? I sure don’t want to disconnect half of my station
everytime I want to use remote. I’d sure like any pointers on hooking this all
up without disabling my station every time I want togo remote. Any help is
sure appreciated

Well

now I know, that in 2013, Microbit made a PCB which fitted into the K3/0

Would me good if Elecraft take again this and now do something about it

PCB is working, Microbit CEO use it

[Elecraft] K3/0 Mini and remoterig integration

2019-02-09 Thread Jorge Diez - CX6VM
I did my first travel with my remote setuo (K3/100 and remoterig) and i was
thinking to minimize the cabling and size of the setup.

A lot of gear and cabling to do, so went to my mind, the idea of a K3/0
Mini with a kind of remoterig INSIDE and most of the cabling already made

So K3/0 Mini cable set, will be already connected inside

Paddle integrated on the "new" K3/0 Mini

You will control CW speed with K3, so no need of remoterig CW pot

Mic integrated on the "new" K3/0 mini, a telescoping boom to reach your face

Just need to connect a pair of USB cables to the laptop and is ready!

Of course this will need some work togheter from Elecraft and Microbit, but
would be very good to have this simplified for the user

[Elecraft] K3/0-mini disassembly

2019-01-19 Thread Scott Townley
I have a K3/0-mini that I removed the rear bail from.  Basically I
unscrewed the four screws, cracked open the case just a bit, and shook
all the internal hardware (nuts/washers) out, and buttoned it back up.
Now I want to put the bail back on.  I've gotten the case fully opened
up (two halves), but I'm having a challenge with the PCB that's attached
to the rear half.  It appears those four black "nubs" that you can see
on the back are some sort of nylon standoff that's being used for
stiffening the PCB.  But it's not obvious to me how to remove them or
otherwise disengage them.  Of course I'd prefer to do this without
destroying them and leaving four holes in the back.

Any suggestions?
TIA,
Scott NX7U

[Elecraft] K3-0 mini microcode?

2019-01-18 Thread David F. Reed

A few questions about the k3-0 mini microcode...

1. Does the K3-0 use the same microcode as the K3?
2. are we supposed to keep it in sync with microcode releases?
3. Do the K3-0 and the K3 need to be running the same release?

Thanks & 73 de Dave, W5SV

I also use this same amp with my KX3 using an old surround sound speaker (2
speakers in one box) and it works great. I needed more volume for Field Day

I use this external audio amp with my KX3 to drive speakers. It is just a
few
components wrapped around a standard audio amp chip. Stereo, 15 W per
channel, volume control, runs on 9-18 V, costs $9.

[Elecraft] [K3/0 mini rx audio out]

2018-12-14 Thread David Windisch
All concerned:

I've searched the archives to no avail for the solution to this challenge.
If there were refs, I missed 'em.

The Heil, CM500 etc., etc., cans I've tried out, on the K3/0 mini front and
side audio outputs, simply do not put enough sound pressure on my TOEs
(tired old ears).
The K3S, however, _does_ put enough sound pressure on my TOEs, with _all_
the can/mic sets I have, especially with the WWII hi-z antique sets.

Has anyone out there in radioland found:
1. a set of cans that doesn't need an external audio amp, or
2. a suitable external audio amp, ?

[Elecraft] K3/0 mini LCD Adjust for vertical mounting -- HOW TO??

2018-11-28 Thread Courtney Krehbiel
Hello All,

I have a K3 and a K3/0 mini control head. They are both mounted with the front
panel vertical in my shack. That's the natural way the K3 sits, but not the
K3/0 mini. The K3/0 mini is designed for use primarily in a portable setting
with the display at a shallow angle to the desktop.

My problem is the K3/0 mini display is quite washed out in the vertical
position even with the LCD Adjust Menu entry set to 100. At the minimum
setting of 2 the display is virtually blank when viewed directly on at eye
level. Does anyone know of a "Super LCD Adjust" menu setting that will
override the design tendency of the K3/0 mini to only be used at shallow angles
on a desktop rather than at eye level?

Thanks much and 73!

[Elecraft] Set up Problems on WSJT/FT8 with Elecraft K3/0 Mini using RRC 1258 MKII

2018-11-14 Thread David Mackey
This set up has been working without problems for several weeks. Then CAT
connection problems began. Audio is received and decoded, the K3/0 can
control the radio, however When WSJT is started, the familiar ³Rig Control
error² dialog box appears. In the Settings Menu under Radio, It does NOT
pass the CAT Test. I¹ve checked the ports and the port we are using is
assigned to the RRC unit.

Settings are
COM6, Baud rate: 38400; Data Bits: Eight; Stop Bits: one; Handshake: None;
PTT Method; CAT; Port; USB (this seems to be my only choice in the dip down
menu); Mode; USB; Split operation: Fake it. I played around with a number of
these also trying other ports.

Software Version 1.9.1;

Does anyone have suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-0-mini / K3 dilemma

2018-05-16 Thread Mark Goldberg
Not knowing much about the protocol Elecraft / Microbit uses, or the IT
staff at the facility, I have doubts about what is being done to figure out
what the problem is. There are tools, such as Wireshark to look at the
packets as they flow through or don't flow through the network. You don't
have to guess. It is likely that some firewall is blocking the packets,
either outgoing or returning. Firewall rules may need to be set up or
changed. Microbit looks like it requires port forwarding for ports
13000-13002 and that must be done in any routers in the way. If they are
doing double NAT on two routers, both will have to get port forwarding set
up. A good IT person should be able to figure this out with the right tools.

All that being said, I don't like port forwarding. I created an incoming
VPN that can be connected to from outside my network using OpenVPN. There
are issues with various firewalls letting the VPN through but if they
connect, the remote device looks like it is on the local network and
everything works, and is encrypted end to end. That is not easy to set up
though.

Another idea is to check the port settings on the router to ensure the port
that Elecraft is using is “open”.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-0-mini / K3 dilemma

2018-05-16 Thread rich hurd WC3T
I'm just spitballing here, but could the net connection there be double
NATted so that the rig can't see the packets returning (since they have a
different address?)

Packets are packets. I had this problem - loss of connectivity - albeit
with a media server in my house that I wanted to be able to hook to
remotely. I called my ISP who pinky swore that they were not double
NATting the address. I did some digging and logged into my cable modem and
sure enough, NAT was turned on (which meant there was one translation in my
router, and one more in the modem.) Double NAT. Turned it off in the modem
and bingo, the server was visible to the world.

I'm hesitant to tender this solution, mindful of the old saw that "if the
only tool you have is a hammer, every job looks like a nail." But at
least it's something you can eliminate and it might be good for thought.

[Elecraft] K3-0-mini / K3 dilemma

2018-05-16 Thread John P. Cummins, Sr.
I have been working with a retired doctor ham friend of mine who has
moved into an assisted living facility.  He has been licensed and active
for more than 40 years.

He wanted to be able to use his K3 remotely and I had helped another
friend of mine who is blind and is also a long time active ham get back
on the air from a condo using the Kenwood TS480SAT -Remoterig RRC1258set
implementation. This approach has worked for nearly 2 years without a
hitch.

I suggested to my doctor friend that we should test whether it would be
possible to operate remotely from within the large facility where he
lived.  So we met with the IT staff there and they had no issues and
showed that his apartment had internet already installed. Before we
ordered any equipment I borrowed the TS450SAT control head and Remoterig
RRC1258-control and tested from his apartment at the assisted living
facility and it worked perfectly.

On the strength of the testing we ordered the K3-0-mini/K3 Twin package
from Elecraft.  After getting over the shorted cable that goes to the
ACC jack on the K3 and a dead power supply for the mini I successfully
tested on my LAN and also from several other remote locations.  We then
unsuccessfully attempted to operate from the assisted living facility.

For more than a month now we have been communicating with Microbit and
Elecraft K3 support trying to figure out what the problem is.
Additional tests with the TS-450SAT continue to operate perfectly from
the facility and testing the K3-0-mini from several other sites out side
of the assisted living facility also work perfectly.

Working with the IT staff at the facility we are convinced that there is
a difference in the packets being generated by the Elecraft and the
Kenwood but I have not been able find any documentation to help identify
that difference.  We feel certain that the internet server at the
facility is finding something suspicious in the Elecraft packets that
are not present in the Kenwood packets.

Has anyone else run across something like this?

[Elecraft] K3/0 Mini question

2017-09-08 Thread Jerry
Good afternoon,

I lost the audio on my K3/0 Mini last night. The unit functions as it should
in making changes to the remote K3 (actually located about 10 feet away). I
can see on the RemoteHams software the auto being received from the remote
and If I use a separate set of headphones using a different audio driver
(not the USB Codec) I can hear the audio coming from the RemoteHams server.
Any one have any ideas on how to fix this problem. Is there a master reset
for the K3/0 Mini unit?

Best regards,

Jerry, W1IE

[Elecraft] K3/0 Mini-F running WSJT-X via RemoteHamRadio USB

2017-07-06 Thread AL7CR
I am testing RemoteHamRadio and have used WSJT-X under their web
application. This has a few annoying limitations compared to running
locally from my K3S.

RemoteHamRadio now supports connecting the K3/0 Mini to the PC with only
a USB cable, i.e. no remoterig box is required. They state that the
only difference between the two setups is that USB does not support
direct FSK at this time. They also have told me that WSJT-X does not
support serial over ethernet very well hence they do not recommend
using CAT.  H

I run WSJT-X JT9 and JT65 as my primary mode on my K3S. I always use
the split mode feature to allow transmission in the sweet spot. VOX for
TX would be OK but having to do everything manually would not be the
WSJT-X experience.

Has anyone out there run this configuration and if so what is your
experience? If it works well then a full remote system running WSJT-X
with RemoteHamRadio would require only a K3/0 mini which is a pretty
sweet deal.

Hopefully someone had already tested this system. I would rather not
have to buy a K3/0 Mini to test it. It is tempting though ..

I took a 1.5 x 1.5 x 4" scrap piece of structural foam and cut a small

was just about right, just below the center of gravity, for it not to
easily tip over on it's face.

Works great!

[Elecraft] K3/0-MINI and N1MM/Remote Rig Polling Problems

2016-09-08 Thread John K3TN via Elecraft

At the W4AAW remote operation, several K3/0 or Mini users are constantly
getting "Radio Reset" messages from their local N1MM+ instance, which
indicates that the N1MM polling of the K3/Mini (to obtain freq/mode data)
has not received a response for 15 seconds or more.

I noticed in the K3 firmware release notes (below) that a "noise fix" for
the Mini suspends RemoteRig polling during PTT.

Any details on that? If VOX is in use for CW, is the PTT condition mean key
down or during the entire time VOX is active? Ie, would QSK mode result in
less polling disruption than VOX on CW?

What I'm looking for is some way to reduce any disruption across the RRC
link that would impact N1MM polling.

73 John K3TN

*MCU 4.93 / DSP 2.83, 10-16-2014*

* PSK63 MODE ADDED: To select PSK31 or PSK63, first tap either end of the
MODE switch to select DATA, then hold the DATA MD switch and use VFO A to
select the PSK data rate.

* KAT500 POWER-ON REMINDER ON K3 DISPLAY: If a powered-off KAT500 is pulling
the auxBus signal low when the K3 is first turned on, "TURN ON KAT500" is
displayed. Previously this condition would lock up the K3 without
explanation.

** K3/0-MINI TX NOISE REDUCTION: Polling by Remote-Rig units is suspended
during PTT use to reduce a "ticking" noise heard in some cases.*

* Changes to synthesizer, KXV3, and KPA3 device drivers (no effect on normal
operation).

Pretty sure that would be zero, since it's inside the K3/0-mini.

It's normal for the K3/0-mini to present two virtual COM ports.

Jeff, can the K3 Utility talk to your K3/0-mini (when no other
software is attempting to do so)? That will tell you if the problem is
with the COM port plumbing or the DXLab Suite config.

Jeff,

How many DE-9 connectors are there on your USB to serial adapter?
If only one (which is normal), then only one COM port should be defined.
That fact that you find 2 COM ports in device manager is cause for
question unless you have an adapter with 2 physical serial ports.

[Elecraft] K3/0 mini usb port

2016-09-03 Thread Jeff Griffin
For some reason while running remote I can't access my K3/0 mini via the USB
port with DXLab Commander anymore. All else is working remotely, only
problem is I can't control anything with my laptop, this all used to work. I
haven't used my remote system in awhile, but last time it worked fine. I'm
thinking maybe the FTDI driver got updated via win10. I'm at FTDI 2.12.18.0,
I think this is the right level. There are no errors reported in any of the
comport properties menu's. When I plug the USB cable in, com ports 5 and 6

[Elecraft] k3/0 Mini problem

2016-08-03 Thread Jerry
GM All,

I purchased and have installed a K3/0 using Remote Hams software. When I
run the unit as a client, I have noticed that I am not able to use the 2nd
receiver. It is absolutely quiet. I can point the transmit towards the
frequency on the second receiver and it will transmit on that frequency. At
the moment, it appears that in order to work split on a rare dx station, the
configuration has to be reversed ie. DX station on main vfo and set the
transmit frequency on some frequency in the dx station suggested listening
bandwidth.

Or have I missed something in the setup that would allow me to use the K3/0
Mini just like I would my home K3? I'm hoping that this is the case.

Best regards,

Jerry, W1IE

[Elecraft] K3/0 Mini Transmit Audio noise

2016-03-18 Thread Ron Castro
I just received a new K3/0 Mini and RemoteRig system and connected it via
LAN to a K3 that will soon be running remote. Everything seems to work
except that the transmit audio is plagued by loud digital hash about 10 dB
below the mic level that does not occur when the mic is plugged directly
into the K3. After reading a post from another user with the same problem,
I fed the mic directly into the RemoteRig and there was no noise. I tried
both the front and side panel connections with three different microphones
that all worked fine with another RemoteRig system I am currently running.

While I am new to Elecraft products, I have used the RemoteRig equipment for
three years and I'm familiar with the settings, applications and
limitations, but it's clear to me that something is wrong in the K3/0. This
is not the "click" caused by polling that was fixed with a recent update.
The user who had the problem last year said that there were numerous others
that had the same problem.

What is known about this and how can it be fixed, other than with my
'ham-strung' RJ45 jumper that brings the RemoteRig mic out direct?

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3/0-Mini low audio in headphones

2015-12-01 Thread Paul Wyse
I am operating my home K3 radio in VA remotely using RemoteRig
RCC-1258MKII twins and the K3/0-Mini. Everything is working well with
the exception of the audio level in my Yamaha CM 500 headphones. The
audio level is normal on the speaker but when I plug the headphones in
the audio is very low. It appears the headphones are loading down the
audio circuit. I tried another headset and it was the same. Any
suggestions?

The user will not be able to make some changes on the remotehams.com K3 at the
remote site, for obvious reasons. For example he will not be able to access the
transmit EQ menu and make changes which might degrade the K3 for the next user
who has a different microphone. I am not familiar with what menu items are
locked out, but I know at least some are.For now, if I may make a suggestion,
it would be for the new user to familiarize himself with the front panel
controls and not worry at all about any menu settings.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini

2015-09-05 Thread Barry Baines
George:

Other than the specific instructions needed to connect the K3/IO-Mini to a K3
trough a Remote Rig device, there is nothing different about setting up and
operating the K3/IO-Mini than there is in operating the target K3 itself. Keep
in mind that the front panel of the K3/IO-mini (including all knobs, menus,
etc.) directly controls the corresponding settings of the “remote” (or
“target”) K3 that it is connected to. When you change a setting on the
K3/IO-Mini, it is actually changing the settings on the target K3. If you go
into the configuration menus, you’re changing the configuration of the target
K3.

The only exception off hand that I can think of to this general statement is
that K3 must be set for “rear panel” microphone so that the mic feed that is
coming from the “remote” K3/IO-Mini to the target K3 which in fact is fed to
the rear panel connection of the target K3, is utilized. Otherwise, if a front
panel mic source is selected, the audio will not be fed into the target K3 from
the K3/IO-Mini.

The real question is whether the operator is familiar with using a K3 and knows
how to configure settings to meet their needs. Thus, reviewing the K3
operating manual makes much sense since that is what is being controlled by the
K3/IO-Mini.

My comments are based upon using the K3/IO-Mini via remote rig directly to my
remote rig controller at the target K3 (e.g. the 1258MK II system) and NOT
using remotehams.com service. I am not familiar with remotehams.com setup, but
presume that the same concepts apply.

Hope this helps,

[Elecraft] K3/0-Mini

2015-09-05 Thread George via Elecraft
I am setting up a K3/0-Mini for a friend who will use it to operate remote
stations accessible via remotehams.com service.

The K3/0-Mini was delivered with an Owner's Manual. The manual is limited
to describing how to set up the Mini to work with a PC, how to operate
with the RemoteRig 1258 MKII System (which we are not using), and how to
update the Mini's firmware. The Owner's Manual does not contain any
information about how to use all of the controls on the Mini, or any
information
about its Menu and Config selections.

Since the person who will be using the Mini is not familiar with at all
with the Mini, or its big brother, a K3, we will need a user-oriented manual
that provides the all the information that an operator will need to know. I
can download copy of a K3 manual, however, I don't know if the
explanations described for a K3 also pertain to the functions of the K3/0_Mini.

Please let me know if there is a more complete user-oriented Operator's
Manual for the MIni, or will the K3 manual correctly explain all the
functions of the Mini?

Thanks, George.

It's been awhile since I last set it up, I was using it at my winter home
for several months without a problem, but can't get it to work here. I have
the feeling I'm forgetting something. Here's my setup and the problem.
I'm connected to the internet via Comcast. I'm at my summer home, and just
had the new Comcast router installed yesterday. I'm using a WiFi extender
that I used in the past with no problem, the extender is configured with my
connection ID with a _EXT extension, without a password. The RRC 1258 is
connected to the extender via an Ethernet cable, the setup I've been using
with no issues.
When I run the Microbit setup program using a USB cable connected to the
RRC 1258 I'm seeing the local RRC, but not the remote one at the K3 site. I
vaguely remember that I should be seeing both RRC 1258's ? But I'm not sure.
Anyway when I turn on the K3/0 mini I get the connect beep(not the
no-connection alarm) but the K3/0 shows a freq and TERM and the controls are
inoperative, turning the main VFO does nothing, etc.
So to recap.
1. I think I should see both RRC's in the Microbit s/w config window ?

2. Do I need to enter the login info for the local router, but I forget
where to do so if true.

Anyone have anything for me to try while I wait to call Elecraft support ?

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-06-01 Thread John K3TN via Elecraft
Hi, Jim - I'm a big fan of your guidance on bonding/shielding. There aren't a
lot of variables to play with between the K3 Mini and the Remote Rig - I did
all the usual things that have solved hum in the past, but didn't see any
improvement. I'm going to run the Mini off of a battery, see if that solves
the TX hum - but I mostly do CW, so haven't gotten back to it.

The RX audio problem is pure attenuation, I can crank up the gain on the RRC
to overcome that attenuation in the Mini audio path but then I'm likely to
be introducing distortion in the RRC.

Fortunately these devices are not mandated in the UK.

Whilst the prevention of fires is laudable, ISTM that the regulators have
jumped the gun and insisted on the use of a device that is still under
development.

Reading the WIKI on AFCI breakers, where lightning nuisance trips occur,
they are under-developed "devices of the devil"!

Perhaps it's time that litigation took place, along the lines of: "It was
late at night and there was an electrical storm which caused an AFCI to
trip, which resulted in the lights failing. My aging mother fell down the
stairs in the dark and broke her collar bone, for which I hold you fully
responsible"!!!

It would seem that it is still not possible to fix 'stupid'!

I recall reading something in an ARRL publication or newsletter that at
least one manufacturer of AFCI breakers has addressed and corrected the
problem of RF susceptibility. That company is Eaton.

It is a bummer that consumers must suffer from products that do not have
sufficient RF immunity. If all manufacturers would 'step up to the
plate' and accept that we live in a world where RF is present, often in
strong fields, we would not have a problem. Hams are not the only cause
of RF problems - think of the problems encountered by those who reside
near broadcast stations. RF fields are emitted by police, fire and
other emergency service transmitters.
IMHO, more manufacturers must be willing to design products that can
withstand reasonable RF fields. Of course, most consumers do not
understand that, and the ham "is to blame". There was a parallel back
in the 1950s and 1960s with television interference when many TVs were
designed with front ends and IF chains that would pick up RF on most any
frequency, much to the consumer's dismay and blame placed on the ham,
even if his transmissions were clean of harmonics.
It just about drove operation on 15 meters off the air because many TV
sets used a 21 MHz IF that was 'wide open' for interference.

2015-05-30 Thread Brian Sheets
YahŠ it sucks. I knew when I moved to an apartment that staying on HF was
going to be a challenge, but I was not prepared for the breaker issue. I
found that with my kx3 and a wonderwand wonder loop on my kitchen table,
that with 10 watts I can do some jt65 and wspr on 20m without popping the
breakers. But my success has been limited and not worthwhile.

I¹ve been a remotehamradio user for almost a year now, but I don¹t have
much interest in ssb or cw these days. Remotehamradio does have a beta
test going on for ³logging² software such as ham radio deluxe. I¹ve tried
jt65 over it, but haven¹t had consistent results and get disconnected or
have HRD lock up. I¹ve been avoiding buying a K3/0 for some time, just
because I didn¹t want to spend the money on a ³non radio² device. But if
I¹m going to get back on jt65, I think its my best option.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-29 Thread PKA

I use one of three different solutions:

1. From a laptop I use two Winkeyers connected over IP via K1EL WKremote
Server/Client programs. Keying may be either using a paddle or using the laptop
keyboard. Alternatively it is possible to use only one Winkeyer at the remote
rig and input by keyboard via Teamviewer. Audio is based on IP-Sound which is
excellent for CW ( superior to Skype).

2. From an iPad or iPhone I use an app called K3iNetwork made by Mike KS7D.
Keying using the keypad. You can even use voice input to the iPhone/iPad (and
key your rig) using SIRI, but this is not yet useful and needs some more work
on the app. But it could be developed to be an interesting mode for RC
operation from a moving car. Audio based on Skype.

3. From an iPad or iPhone I use an app called K3iDitDah also made by Mike.
Keying is done using the touch screen in a way like touch-type paddling.
Although this app can be used as it is now it still does need some development
work. Audio based on Skype.

NB: It is possible to switch between solution 1 and 2 (or 3) on the fly while
receiving!

It all depends on what you want to achieve.

There are many different reasons for hams to want to operate RC. Different
requirements probably call for different solutions.

If you want to operate your home rig (or for that matter a real remote rig)
when you are not at home, eg. when travelling, it might be both expensive and
unpractical using the K3/0-Mini and RemoteRig set. Expensive or not depends on
your financial situation of course. But you will spend something like 1270 USD
and you will have to carry around some boxes and cables etc. But you have the
luxury of having a very attractive man/machine interface!

Still for the traveller: If you want an inexpensive solution, if you can accept
to operate your rig from a computer screen and *if* you anyway carry a laptop
ot iPad (or even iPhone) and you already have a PC in your shack (you can do
away with a cheap notebook) you can limit your investment to less than 100 USD
and still operate your K3+KPA+Kat500 quite satisfactorily. I dare to say so
because I have done it for many years (>20k QSOs over 10 years, all CW).

You will need to dig into some details about setting up networks and handle
computers, so if you dont like to do this, it might not be your solution. I
would not say it is free of problems/challenges, but I started from scratch,
and am very satisfied with how it works.

But if on the other hand you want to set up a stationary operating pos. for a
remote station, it is a completely different ball game and I think the
K3/0-Mini and RemoteRig set is by far the best solution for that situation.

So my advice to you is to first of all find out what kind of use you are
looking for and then select a solution.

RemoteRig box does not come with a supply. I power mine off of a 4A
switcher, and it's fine.A 1A supply should work, but they seem to have
issues.

Hi John,

I know nothing about these products other than a vague one paragraph
functional description, but I do suspect an issue with the audio
interface and/or how the units are powered and bonded. Take a look at

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-27 Thread Gerry Hull
I've been using the K3/0 mini for about a year for casual DXing and for
many contests.
The K3/0 mini is perfect -- a mirror of your K3. Once you get used to the
the fact that
you are setting menus on the Remote radio, all will be good.

The mix that is important is how you use the K3/0 to interconnect it to the
remote shack.
As stated here, many users are using the MicroBit RemoteRig product. This
adds about $750+/-
to your remote cost, but provides a far superior result than any other
method.

The killers in remote operation are latency and jitter (jitter being the
varying difference in latency over time.)
The Microbit boxes use dedicated hardware, and a very flexible software
configuration. to allow you to tailor the box to your needs. The
RemoteRig components are not designed specifically for the K3; therefore,
they have a generic interface design, and Elecraft sells the specific
interconnect cable for the K3/0.

The majority of my contesting experience has been on CW in the Majors: CQWW
and ARRL DX, running remote to K2LE/1 from my QTH in NH. The shack has
1.5Mb/.5Mb DSL service. The average latency on the connection varies from
120-150mS, with very manageable jitter. We run the RemoteRig boxes with
8kHz bandwidth, and this works very well. I don't feel handicapped by
being remote at all... In many QSOs, I get unsolicited comments of great
audio on SSB, and no issues with CW. It is just like being there.

The Microbit boxes do have a lot of configuration parameters. You also
have to know how to port forward from your router in the shack (unless you
are using the box in your own home, and both ends are on the same LAN). If
you are not familiar with networking, configuring the boxes can be a
challenge. As the others have stated, the forum on the RemoteRig site is a
good resource --> search it with Google first, as much of your frustration
has already been experienced by others.

Their is another solution with the K3/0 which is essentially 15-minute plug
and play. It is a free solution, once you own the K3/0. This is the
software and website of Brandon, KG6YPI -- an Elecraft employee and the guy
you usually talk to if you are experiencing problems with the Microbit gear
and K3/0.

Your K3/0 has a USB connector on it. This connector can be plugged into a
PC, and two codecs (send/receive) and two RS-232 connections (Rig Control
and passthrough) are automatically installed.

Brandon's site is www.remotehams.com. Their is PC software for the remote
end as well as the server end.
You can use Brandon's software without the K3/0 -- but it has some very
cool features:
- If you have a K3/0 and a K3 at the station, you get full control of the
radio with all features.
- If you want to connect to a remote on RemoteHams, where the remote is NOT
a K3, you can still use the
K3/0 for frequency control and other features.

I use RemoteHams to control Dom, 3Z9DX's station, and run SSB from Poland.
It works very well, though the overall
latency is much higher.

CW still has some work to be done. But I know Brandon is getting there.
I've asked Dom if I could try his station in some contest on CW -- it will
be interesting to see how that works out.

I use both RemoteHams and the Microbit RemoteRig solution with the K3/0,
and am very happy with both; I will continue to use RemoteRig in serious
contest situations.

[Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-27 Thread Ellam, Timothy St. J.
I have used the RemoteRig with a K3/0 (not the mini) to a K3/KPA500 combination
and a SteppIR vertical. It works fine, but the RX audio is certainly not a
strong as directly through the RemoteRig.

As others have noted this not quite plug and play and some tweaking of the
parameters is required. There is a lot of good information on the RemoteRig
forum and DJ0QN has some excellent network guides for those who have a limited
understanding of this area (like me).

Internet connectivity is key. You need solid connections at both ends otherwise
latency is an issue.

All in all though the system is seamless and is a game changer for remote
operation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-27 Thread John K3TN via Elecraft
I've been using the Remote Rig interfaces with my K3 for several years and
the K3/Mini for the past 6 months or so. I'm a big fan of the Remote Rig
devices, not a fan of the K3/Mini.

I started out doing remote operating with the K4VV group using an all
software approach and the Remote Rig devices are an enormous improvement -
reduction in latency, better audio quality, the ability to essentially just
have a very long mic/key/headset cords vs. doing remote PC control.

You still need a decent Internet connection. The Remote Rig interfaces will
**not** correct for packet loss or high jitter (variable latency) Internet
connections. If your round trip delay is much over 150ms, or varies widely
from ping to ping, or if you lose packets, CW in particular will not be
usable.

The Remote Rigs also have a gazillion parameters and the manuals don't quite
get you there - almost everyone has to resort to the "million monkeys
randomly hitting keys" approach to get everything going. The forums on the
Remote Rig site are very helpful and W1UE in particular has posted a lot of
good K3 guidance.

The K3/Mini has been a big disappointment, especially at the price - I
should have just gotten a bare bones K3. The major problem has been the
audio on both TX and RX when connecting the headset to the Mini (vs.
connecting to the RemoteRig). On TX, I get loud hum and on RX, the audio is
20db down compared to the audio coming out of the RemoteRig.

I sent the Mini back, Elecraft sent it back saying it worked fine. (They
didn't even contact me, which I objected to and they are fixing that problem
in their process.) On RX, apparently that audio loss is due to a filter that
was put in to deal with digital noise getting in the audio, but running the
AF gain at 90% on the Mini is not acceptable to me - distortion up and no
head room for low signals or turning off AGC, etc.

So, I have to connect the headset to the RemoteRig, then audio is fine - but
the cabling is less convenient and messy. Part of the reason I justified
spending the $700 was to be able to essentially use the Mini just like I
would a "real" K3, but I can't do that. I may bring along the Mini and
Remote Rig set up on travel some day if I keep the Mini - that portability
is about the only reason to keep it.

Others have had the same audio issues, others just naturally connect their
headset to the RemoteRig, others have had no problems with the Mini - your
mileage may vary.

[Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-26 Thread Randy
I am fairly new to Elecraft and the K3 but I do have the K3/0 mini and the
Remoterig twins for K3. I ordered and installed the WiFi board for the
Remoterig. All works excellent. As long as the WiFi connection is OK, the
K3/0 mini connects to the remote site and operates as if you are there.
Many QSO's using the remote equipment and the other party cannot tell the
difference. I am just using the standard MH2 mike. I do like the WiFi option
as if allows me to establish stored WiFi connects that are remembered when I
return so I simply set up the K3/0 mini and remote rig, turn it on and with
a minute or so, it is ready to operate.

Latency is small and not really noticeable so no issues there.

You can use the K3/0 mini within your network but you may need a different
destination IP than if you are outside the network. I have operated both
ways.

I have not played with the codecs yet. My audio reports are good.

I do have a PC at the remote site and I connect to it with Team Viewer which
allows me to operate and monitor the KAT500 and KPA500 via my laptop. I use
the Elecraft beta control software for this.

Home QTH is Calgary, Alberta. My K3 is British Columbia (VE7). I have
operated from Phoenix, Fort Lauderdale and Calgary on a fairly regular
basis. And, at the K3 site, take the K3/0 mini onto the deck outside and
operate there when the weather is nice.

Just a few comments.

I'm in the midst of a terrible urge to spend some $$'s and the K3/0'-Mini's
siren call is hard to resist. I've done a bit of reading on the Remoterig
products and there is scare info on the K3/0 mini.

I'd love to hear any testimonials, rig setups, real-world latency
commentary, or even how you manage the firmware.

Anyone play with the codecs? Thoughts on the different audio quality?

My current though is using the K3/0-Mini on the same local network and I do
some occasional work travel, might be nice to take it with me.

I used mine to remote my radio all of about two feet. It was nice having
a smaller control head on my computer desk. I bought it thinking I could
use it to work Kansas while I was on vacation in Japan - and then I
never used it for that. Kansas is the only state I don't have on CW.

I have to get it set up again and get it working through my firewall.
It was definitely a fun thing to play with.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-26 Thread Kari SM0HRP
Hi!
I have used the K3 mini extensively over the year. Both over a ADSL line and
4G. . Latency is dependent on the internet access - on ADLS it is 10 ms on
4G 30-40 ms.The K3 mini is so well established and works so well with the K3
and the RRC 1258 units so it is just for you to go and buy it. There is no
big difference with different codecs. I use the next lowest quality level
and when running dual mode it consumes about 400 kbps. Going for better
audio quality I could not hear the difference to be honest. I have worked
over 700 QSO:s over a year and all major Dx-peditions on almost all bands
which proves the quality of the system. My system can be seen on qrz.com.
I control ACOM2000A:s and OM 2500A:s with rotor controls from Green Heron.
Works UFB.
Join the satisfied Electraft K3 remote club. You wont be disappointed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini

2015-05-24 Thread Gerry Hull
The K3/0 does not have a network connection as part of the solution.
There are two ways to use it with the Wireless lan:
- If you use the RemoteHams software, you can use a Windows tablet
as the interface (You can get a Dell Venue 8 tablet on eBay for about
$100) and plug your K3/0 into it.
- You can use a RemoteRig box with a Wireless interface or a Wireless
Bridge.
