Re: [Elecraft] K3: Problem with CM-500 plugged into front panel through AD1K

2014-01-22 Thread Jim Brown
This is really a VERY simple problem with a very simple solution. You
buy a mic connector that mates with the K3 mic connector. You buy a
cable-mount female 1/8-in RTS jack. May make a short adapter cable using
a short piece of single conductor-shielded cable, like RG58. On one end,
you solder the tip of the RTS jack to the center conductor and the
sleeve of the RTS jack to the cable shield. On the other end, you wire
the center conductor to the mic input pin of the K3, and you wire the
cable shield to the shell of the mic connector. That's it! Two
connectors, a short piece of coax, and a soldering iron.

Another simple solution is a pre-made cable from R/S or equivalent with
a female TRS jack on one end. Cut the cable, wire the end from the TRS
jack to a connector that mates with the K3 mic jack. Ham stores sell
these connectors. The Power Point on my website about Ham Interfacing
lists the part numbers of good TRS jacks and a good place to buy them.

This is ham radio, not CB radio or high futility A/V. Hams study
equipment manuals to learn connector pin-out, they have soldering irons
and make their own cables.

[Elecraft] K3: Problem with CM-500 plugged into front panel through AD1K

2014-01-21 Thread Stan Rowe
Does anyone have any ideas why my Yamaha CM-500 microphone won't work when
plugged into the front of the K3. I am using the Kenwood AD1K adapter and I
have the firmware set to select the front panel, low gain, with bias on
(FP.L bIAS). The CM-500 headphones are plugged into the Phones jack on the
front of the K3 and work fine. The CM-500 mic plug (grey) is plugged into
the corresponding jack on the AD1K. When I press my footswitch, the K3
goes into transmit but there is no audio when I speak into the CM-500's
microphone. I have tried the footswitch plugged in both on the back of the
K3 and into the AD1K footswitch jack and it works fine (puts the K3 into
transit) in both cases.

When plugged into the rear Phone and Mic jacks on the K3, the CM-500 works
like it should. In that case I have the firmware set to RP.L bIAS.and both
the CM-500 microphone and headphones work fine, so I'm quite sure the CM-500
is not the culprit.

It almost seems like the AD1K is the problem.

This must be something simple, but I am stuck. Any suggestions much
appreciated.

Thanks

Stan - K6VWE

My guess is that the adapter is not wired properly.

Use an Ohm meter and see if pin of the Foster plug is connected
to the center pin of the 3.5mm jack on the AD1-K (DC connection).
It is entirely possible that the adapter has a blocking capacitor
as the AD1-K was designed for use with Heil's dynamic microphones
which do not want DC on the mic element.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Problem with CM-500 plugged into front panel through AD1K

2014-01-21 Thread Don Wilhelm

Stan,

Try a test - put a bare stereo plug into the adapter and check with your
ohmmeter to see if there is continuity between the ring and the shell of
the plug.
If so, that is the reason - the adapter is using a mono jack and the
CM500 has a stereo plug. The tip and ring of the CM500 mic plug are
connected together, so when plugged into a mono jack, the audio is
shorted to the shell.

The AD1K has a DC blocking cap built in. Plug it in the rear jack or use the
battery box provided with the CM500 to provide bias.
