Kent, You're technically correct, but for the 67 years I've been a ham, "CW" has meant Morse code on the ham bands. This has, indeed, led to misunderstandings about the bandwidth of Morse transmission. A constant carrier has near zero bandwidth. Morse transmission occupies hundreds of Hz in a GOOD transmitter. And Morse operation on the ham bands is 100% amplitude modulation of a carrier by a train of rectangular waves, which in poorly designed rigs produces intermodulation distortion in the RF signal chain, sidebands that are heard as key clicks. In general, the strength of sidebands is proportional to the speed of the transitions from on to off and off to on -- the faster the transition, the stronger the clicks. One of the many virtues of Elecraft rigs beginning with the original K3 is that these transitions are carefully shaped to minimize clicks while maximizing readability. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 manual page 14 regardincg "TUNE".
Let's get our nomenclature right ... CW never means Morse Code. It means continuous wave or carrier wave (used interchangeably). Morse-type Code occurs only when a continuous wave is turned on and off to represent letters, numbers, and punctuation according to a given language's agreed upon chart of correlation. CW is a mode of transmission. Morse Code is an application using that mode. 73, Kent K9ZTV > On Feb 6, 2023, at 10:15 AM, an Amateur Extra wrote: > > Normally, "CW" means morse-code. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX3 manual page 14 regardincg "TUNE".
Hello, My question is about the "TUNE" selection (half second hold of the XMIT button). The manual's wording is "TUNE is used to put out a CW signal at the power level selected by the __ PWR control.". Normally, "CW" means morse-code. But, in this instance, am I correct in thinking it stands for "continuous wave" or, in other words, an unmodulated FM signal (constant carrier and amplitude)? The reason for my email is I am setting up a Magnetic-Loop-Antenna that has a "remote tuning" capability and that "remote tuning" set-up is not going very well for me. If the KX3 is putting out a continuous wave, then there is a serious problem with the "remote tuning" box. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Manual
Actually, you can update the PDF version of Elecraft manuals. This is a great (IMHO) way to keep track of firmware changes. I can carry all the annotated manuals with me during portable/mobile expeditions for the eventuality of a memory failure (mine, not the rigs'). It also saves a lot of trees. I always know where to find my PDF copies and really dislike most paperwork, except for the awesome KE7X books. I tried doing this with the IC-7610 manual, but it was not allowed. I would add this to the K3s vs. IC-7610 comparison chart as an Elecraft benefit. BTW, I have the 7610 manual to help a friend who bought one. His radio is back at Icom for what seems to be a common failure mode--suddenly no TX or RX. He would not drink the Elecraft Kool-Aid I tried to provide, even though he's operated many a K3 at FD or contest sites with me. 73, Bill, K8TE (catching up on e-mail) I download all the Elecraft manuals and print them on 3-hole paper (pre-punched) and then keep them in a binder. This way, I can add notes here and there in the right spot merely by inserting another 3-hole punched paper or punching printed e-mails or something myself. I think this is the absolute best way to manage the information you will collect over the years on different things like suggested settings for this-and-that and so on. 73, phil, K7PEH -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX3 Manual
I just purchased a KX3 from the original owner. It did NOT come with the manual. Does Elecraft sell the original Manuals? I am NOT interested in downloading the .PDF Thanks W5SUM Sent from my iPhone __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KX3 manual information
I would like to point out there is no errata for the KX3 owners manual which was printed about 2 years ago according to the Elecraft website. Lots of firmware changes in 2 years! So an errata page does not solve my problem. It is hard for me to believe there is no up-to-date information available without going through 2 years worth of firmware updates and hand writing them in my manual??? Still confused in Ohio! [Elecraft] KX3 manual, CAT control, I-Q, and so forth
Unless there's an unseen gotcha, it appears that one could plug the I-Q into a stereo sound card, connect to your PC via CAT, and have a complete SDR and/or Panadaptor display without any headaches. This is possible with the K3 only by inserting something like a Softrock or LP-Pan between the IF out and the soundcard in, but it looks as if anybody who has such a setup going now could just plug the KX3 right in, make an adjustment to the IF offset in the SDR program, and be good to go. This is exactly what I've been hoping for since the early discussions of the KX3. Even though I know it's not yet the middle of March, I am watching out the window for the UPS guy. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Manual
So the date is now March or was it always March. I am excited nevertheless. I can't wait to bring it on the babymoon in April. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Manual
There will definitely be a February edition of the manual posted on our website. It's already in use by our field testers. 73, Wayne N6KR On Feb 15, 2012, at 4:25 PM, John Cooper wrote: Will there be a preliminary .pdf manual released for the KX3 soon to hold us over while we wait patiently for March?
