[Elecraft] KX3 and Digital Modes

Ron, there is a test report on our website showing the difference between stock Elecraft and our Kx31 heatsink at: https://proaudioeng.com/products/pae-kx31-heatsink-kit/ Click on the 'Testing' tab to read the procedure and results. We calculated there is twice as much heat generated by the PX3's PA running at 10-12W than the maximum amount which can be convectively removed from ANY heatsink that fits on the top of rig. This being stated, we have many JT65 contesters who use our heatsink successfully. [Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes
I finally upgraded my little KX1 to a new KX3. LOVE the KX3! Intent is to use it mainly when I travel, but also as a nice QRP addition to the shack. My K3/KPA500 combo is still my main shack rig. One of the things I want to try is using the KX3 with is low power digital modes, like WSPR and maybe JT65. I have been trying to hook things up to my radio laptop and so far, I have managed to get half way: JT65 decodes signals perfectly, so that side is working OK. The problem is when I plug the transmit side into the KX3 and the laptop output (speakers), the KX3 immediately flips into TX mode (little red light comes on). No RF is being sent, there are NO tones being generated from the laptop. It's like PTT is activated. Doesn't matter if JT65 is running or not, the plug goes into the laptop and the TX light goes on. I am using the supplied 'green' cable from the KX3 cable packet. It is a stereo cable. The radio is set to VOX on. If either cable end is removed, the TX light goes o ut. What have I missed? BTW, same results with two different laptops. Thanks! [Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes
I would think anyone with an XG3 could use to do the extended VFO calibration. I tested mine and it has reasonable accuracy and stability. Of course I have a mw counter with E-11 accuracy for checking this so I can just set the KX3 exactly to that frequency. I have not run the KX3 thru frequency measurements so may have to do that after trying the procedure recommended by Wayne. I run the KX3 on 28-MHz IF for 2m-FM so that mode is a good test of frequency drift. I run the KX3 at 3w to drive my 2m-transverter. When I have made these tests I will add the results to the power-point review I made for the proceedings of MUD-2012. It is on my website in pdf form: http://www.kl7uw.com/Review_of_Elecraft_KX3.pdf 73, Ed - KL7UW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes
Hi all, Lance (W7GJ) recently described his efforts to use the KX3 for JT65 for 6-meter moonbounce. Lance pretty much wrote the book on this niche, so it's not surprising that he went to extremes, rolling his own heatsink to reduce the RX-TX frequency shift to just a few Hz on 6 meters. He also used our new temperature-compensation procedure. I admire Lance's dedication to this pursuit--and put a lot of time in on it myself. But I wanted to point out that supplemental heatsinking of the KX3 is *not* needed for typical digital-mode operation with the KX3. PSK31, RTTY, etc. will all function out of the box on the lower bands (20 meters is by far the most common band for digital communications). If you want to use JT65 or other extremely narrowband modes, I do suggest doing extended VFO temperature compensation. There's a procedure for this on our KX3 page, and if you don't have a very stable signal source, you can use our new XG50 RF generator. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Following the listed procedure made made my KX3's previously iffy performance on 6m digimodes acceptable and even just about acceptable for HF QRSS. I used the 5th harmonic of my K3's 10MHz GPS locked reference as the calibration signal Dave Ww2r Message: 14 Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2012 18:13:03 -0800 From: Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes To: k...@yahoogroups.com, Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: d032b041-f5e5-4a29-ac91-d7cb21045...@elecraft.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Hi all, Lance (W7GJ) recently described his efforts to use the KX3 for JT65 for 6-meter moonbounce. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes
From the order page, under KX3 accessories: XG50 Kit (Simple 49.380 MHz Signal Source) The Elecraft XG50 is a simple 49.380 MHz signal source specifically designed for use with the KX3 Extended VFO Temperature Compensation Procedure. See App Note. I used the 5th harmonic of my 10 MHz GPSDO for the procedure. 73, Bruce, N1RX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The XG50 is a 49 MHZ signal generator of the stable verity used to calibrate the temperature compensation of the KX3. I used my K3 as a signal source it worked fine. Found it. Thanks all. What really had me puzzled is that when I entered xg50 (or XG50) in the search box at the top of the price list and order page I got Sorry, no matches were found containing xg50. No clue as to why.
