That's absolutely possible over the serial port (ACC1)! The Programmer's
Reference has the details:

You don't need to go as far as sending commands to query the KX3 (or KX2, or K3, for that matter). Set MENU:AUTO INF from NOR to ANT CTRL, and every time you change the frequency dial, change bad, the KX3 will automatically report frequency and a number of other parameters. Don't need to send commands, reporting automatically happens. Format of the status report is in the document quoted.

Suggest your mag loop supports 38400 baud. With KX3, other speeds do work but as soon as you add other things (PX3, KXPA100) you will find that some of them enforce 38400 baud so you "might as well".

MENU:AUTO INF set to ANT CTRL also works on KX2 and even on K3 (it's called MENU:AUTOINF and needs to be set to AUTO 1 on K3 but then works like the rest). Personally, I use it to control my Hardrock 500 amplifier and this "just works".
