Re: [Elecraft] Portable antennae for the KX3

2023-09-06 Thread Howard Hoyt via Elecraft

Hi all,

For those of you using the Elecraft AX1 or AX2, Pro Audio Engineering
now offers a mounting solution: theAM1
. A lightweight
mount option for your portable setups.  We have been discussing it over
at the elecraft...@groups.io , but I
know there are Elecraft KX owners here who are not currently in that group.

Re: [Elecraft] Portable antennae for the KX3

2023-09-01 Thread Eric Fitzgerald

Bill,

For my SOTA activations I carry this little gem:

https://www.packtenna.com/store/p1/PackTenna_Mini_Random_Wire_Antenna_%289%3A1_UNUN%29.html#/

It fits easily in my "Shack in a Bag."  I use a short length of coax
with it.

I also, as Walter suggested, always carry *two* BNC binding posts (then
tend to get misplaced) and a home-made doublet tuned to 40m made from RC
power cord.  This seems to get out a bit better than the Packtenna but
takes a little longer to deploy.

Another country hear from. HTH

TKS for any help.

Excellent advice.

There's nothing special about antennas for Elecraft radios. The ARRL
Handbook and Antenna Book are our friends, and ought to be on every
ham's bookshelf! We've been using the same antennas for almost a century!

Re: [Elecraft] Portable antennae for the KX3

2023-09-01 Thread Walter Underwood
Regardless of what else you carry, I recommend taking a BNC to double binding
post adaptor and two wires, 25 feet each. Connect one wire to the red post and
toss it into a tree or over a bush, connect the other wire to the black post
and lay it on the ground. Press ATU TUNE and you’ll be good on 40 m through 10
m. This is described in the KX2 manual and versions of it go back to the KX1
ATU manual about 20 years ago.

I wind up my wire figure-8 style on “midi winders” from SOTAbeams. They are
similar in length to the KX3, so pack nicely.

I use 26 AWG stranded insulated “toughcoat silky” wire from The Wireman.
