[Elecraft] Re: HPS-1a (was Power Supply for K3 ?)

2008-02-24 Thread Phil Debbie Salas
I have a fairly detailed review of the HPS-1a in the Equipment Reviews
section of my website (www.ad5x.com). There are definately duty cycle
requirments to consider. It does work pretty well for SSB, and for full QSK
CW at reasonable CW speeds. All my testing was done with my IC-706G at the
time. Frankly, I think it is a good power supply for portable operation
since it is so tiny and light. But for a regular station power supply, I
prefer something a little heftier. Just my opinion.

2008-02-24 Thread k4tmc
I tried using one of the HPS-1a units back in Nov during the ARRL Phone
Sweepstakes. I found that it was not quite adequate for my modified
K2/100. My mods were to the speech processor and mic gain, used with a
Heil HC4 element. I was getting reports of distorted audio peaks. I
switched to a 20+ amp linear supply and never had any more problems.

I just used the K3/100 with a Radio Shack 25 amp switcher this weekend
during the CQ 160 SSB Contest, and had no problems.
