[Elecraft] Soon To Be KX-3 Owner Question ...

2012-03-30 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

Can someone shed some light on wether the KX-3 has got audible (to the ear)
CW Sidetone from the internal speaker / Like we are mostly used to with
just about any other radio ?

Just watched the KX3 Activates Little Si For Summits On The Air - SOTA
video on Youtube ...way ta go fella's who did that ! But one thing that to
me
seems apparent in the video is the LACK of high volume on the internal
speaker for when a person is actually keying the radio themselves... As
apposed to the station coming back to them

Perhaps it was just the outdoors location that seemed to mute or make the
audio from the KX3's internal speaker sound a bit lower in volume the
sidetone oscillation audio on the video, I don't know..so thought I'd ask
for comments from folks with more experience..

TIA

Yes, or you can use headphones or external amplified speakers.

You can crank the sidetone up as high as you like, independent of the
receiver's AF gain. I imagine the operator in the video had it set to
his liking.

The sidetone can be quite loud from the internal speaker. Of course
it's a small speaker, not intended for use in mobile or other high-
noise situations. For mobile use, you can patch the audio through your
car's stereo, and for outdoor use, I highly recommend headphones or
earbuds.

I wouldn't skimp on earbuds. Some good ones are the musician in-ear
earphones made by Shure and Etymotic Research, both located near
Chicago. In addition to sounding good, the better models are more
comfortable and do a better job of sealing out external sounds.
