The following is so idiotic that I'm only suggesting it because I've
done it myself, at least twice! Reaching around the laptop I plugged in
the USB, with what felt like just the right amount of resistance. But
nothing happened. After 10 minutes of detective work in system logs, I
looked, and found that I'd managed to wedge the plug between the plastic
walls of the *Ethernet* socket.

Re: [Elecraft] USB to Serial Converter Question

2011-05-28 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Hi Phil (WA7URV),

Click on start.

In the typing window that has "search" etc in it, type "device
manager" without the quotes. This brings up a Device Manager window.
Look down the list to the line "Ports (COM & LPT)". Double click on
it to expose all the COM and LPT devices. Leave this window open in
this state.

See if your device is listed. If not, uplug the USB/serial cable.
Then install the drivers. When they are done, plug in the USB/serial
cable. You should get a recognition of new hardware, there should be
some activity going on, and before long you should see a new com port
come up under "Ports (COM & LPT) in the device manager window. The
com port that is listed will be what your Elecraft utilities should be
directed to use.

One of mine comes up as "Gigaware USB to Serial Cable (COM4)" The
line is there when it is plugged in and not there when it's not.

I guess I -should- have been more specific. I meant that the KUSB needs to
be plugged into the computer, before it will show up in the device manager
-on the computer-.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your answer, but every USB-to-Serial
converter that I have - and there are several types - show up
in the Device Manager as long as it is plugged into the computer
whether there is anything on the serial end or not.

Have you plugged the KUSB in yet? It won't show in the device manager unless
it is actually attached.

[Elecraft] USB to Serial Converter Question

2011-05-28 Thread 492commish

I got a new computer awhile back.  I hadn't attempted to load the drivers
software  until now.  I would like to get my K3 to the latest firmware update
and also play with my new XG3.

The Elecraft sheet for the USB to Serial Converter says to look at the
computer's Device Manager to find Ports (COM & LPT).  Upon getting into the
computer's Device Manager I don't see such a folder, and I can't find the
"Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port listing .  I've looked through all the other
folders in the Device Manager; no luck.

I am using Windows 7.

Can anyone out there help me?
