Re: [Elecraft] Serial Number Check for Elecraft gear
I don't know the details in this particular case. I googled KX3 stolen and got two hits. One was stolen at Dayton...no doubt a target rich collection of rigs to steal what with half the cars bristling with antennas. The other was stolen in 2014, locked in the trunk of a car at night with a radio pack full of equipment, several handguns and shooting accessories. I won't speculate on the details, but I'll offer two examples of my own. My pickup was broken into. The thieves took a 15 year old scratched up KMart AM/FM/CD, and a roll of paper towels from behind the seat. I was parked during the week in the unguarded, unoccupied parking lot (except for my truck) of a local wilderness park. I was gone hiking for 2-3 hours. I have to accept some responsibility for the loss of that POS radio and half roll of towels. The real loss for me was the broken door lock. $85 and it can be punched out again any time in seconds unobtrusively and almost noiselessly. Same truck. My tailgate was stolen late evening in my driveway with bright motion detector lights functioning. Basically, I provided adequate lighting at their job site. I have the bottom of the line F150. Stick shift, rubber mats. And no factory tailgate lock. Two guys can take a tailgate in about 3 minutes or less. If it has a lock, I'd give them 5 minutes. Lesson 1: They will steal anything. There is little risk and if they get $5, they at least covered their gas expense. Lesson 2: Your vehicle, I don't care what make or model, is NOT secure. A locked trunk full of radios and guns is not really locked. Your stuff is just out of sight. Police cars are broken into or stolen. Lesson 3: Your level of security should be in proportion to the value of the items on offer to thieves. There's a saying, Never gamble more than you are willing to lose. Lesson 4: You are being watched. Thieves have a lot of the same high tech stuff you have (they probably stole it though). They watch you punching in PINs. They watch you loading your handguns into the trunk when you leave the range. They watch you lock your radio in your trunk. They watch you remove your antenna when you park somewhere. Given just those few lessons (and there are so many more), it isn't that difficult to assign some responsibility to the victim. I hope it isn't too unsettling for us to discover there are bad people out there willing to do bad things. The discussion has already taken more list time than it should so any comments, please email me. Is it possible to tell from the Serial Number when the unit was manufactured and if there were any upgrades or mods made after that S/N ? Re: [Elecraft] Serial Number Update Status
I can also add backup to that as well - I have K3 SN 20 fully upgraded. It may not be relevant to the initial question, but the same thing applies to the K2 - yes, there was a borad change at SN 3000, but upgrade kits were available at modest cost to bring the older board up to the same level except for minor and inconsequential differences. The K2 upgrades continued through about SN 4660 and after that no further upgrades were made. The result is that even the lowest K2 serial number can perform just like a brand new K2 thanks to the way Elecraft has handled upgrades. If you would like to compare my SN 20 K2 against a brand new K2, just come over to my workbench - I can show you that the performance is equal. No model number changes that require you to purchase a new transceiver to get the benefits of the change - just get the upgrade kit and install it and you have a new and improved transceiver. It is just the way Elecraft does business. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/28/2014 7:47 PM, Matt Zilmer wrote: Just to back Mike up on his remark, I own K3 s/n 24 and have all the mods installed as well as up to date firmware. Re: [Elecraft] Serial Number Update Status
FWIW, When I was choosing which rig to get, to upgrade from my TenTec Omni V, I wanted a radio that was going to be on the top of its game as long as there were parts available for it. I considered all the rigs available at the time and it was a close draw between the Orion the K3. I eliminated the Asian rigs because of the extremely high cost and because there were problems that were seemingly eternal that the only fix was a new model and retiring the old one. The Orion was and still is a really fine radio but there were a lack of updates to the software that for whatever reason, left their owners complaining and the solution never being made available. At the same time the K3 was seeing updates seemingly every month if not sooner and it was obvious Elecraft was trying to resolve every valid issue that it could. The Orion ran into issues with end of life components that could not be obtained and an Orion II was released. I'd decided to go with Elecraft, another US company and I felt badly not going with TenTec but to my impression, Elecraft was delivering and TenTec was not. As it is today, I made the right choice; The Orion is no longer in production (which is a shame because it was a really nice radio) and the K3 is in production and Elecraft will make all of them as-new for a modest investment. No way I could afford to buy a new rig every couple of years but in the K3 I have a rig I am familiar with and it is newer and improved, just like buying a new upgraded radio but one I don't have to learn about or the location/functions of buttons anew as a new rig would demand. Would I like a newer serial #? Absolutely but only from the standpoint that people equate a higher serial with a better radio. With this upgraded/updated K3, it is exactly the same as a new one. When Elecraft comes up with a new update/upgrade, I'll be right there to buy that and keep my rig brand new. What other manufacturer does that other than Elecraft? They have my business from now on. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Re: [Elecraft] Serial Number Data Base
Ron, As always, thank you for your down to earth response. That was the type of answer I was looking for. By ...work all the serial numbers... I assume you mean learn who owns them and/or where they are located, etc. I know some folks are as interested in radio serial numbers as I am in what makes it tick. It is all a part of the depth of this hobby. Since most of my equipment is homebrew, built from some type of kit, or in the boat anchor category, very little of my equipment is serialized. I understand why a manufacturer serializes his products, but I have been a bit surprise at the serial number pride that I have seen. Surprised, but not upset. Obviously, I do not buy a lot of new equipment. In the case of the KX3, they took most everything I wanted in a radio and packaged it into a very nice package, so I had to buy one! Sorry that I didn't make it clear that I was just wondering why someone would go register their radio serial number in a third party database. Now, I wonder if zerobeat would be interested in creating a category for my homebrew Whaddon Mark VII Paraset replicas...probably not. Re: [Elecraft] Serial Number Data Base
Gary and all, I would like to point out - the serial number list that is being referred to is NOT an Elecraft list. Elecraft can dig up the record of the original buyer, but does not maintain a list of who now owns what. You may also note that there are various reasons that I have not submitted the serial numbers of my K2, K3 nor KX3 to that list, and I do not consider myself an appliance operator. I am however, a proud owner. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/15/2013 4:46 AM, Gary Gregory wrote: I am glad that Elecraft keep a list. I understand why a manufacturer serializes his products, but I have been a bit surprise at the serial number pride that I have seen. Surprised, but not upset. A major point may be being missed. Early on at least, having a list of S/N's and their owners/contact info allowed one to find someone with a close S/N and discuss anomalies. The Elecraft products did change over time, especially after initial production. For every one I have [KX1, K2, K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500, W1], those changes diminish with time, and lately have been diminishing rapidly. I picked it up this morniong and can report father and bub doing well getting to know each other ! Serial number is 133 and its a fully assembled, 100watt , complete with ATU bouncing bundle of health. Just need to get the settings right on the mic and will be on air tonight. It was supposed to be a birthday present in July but turned out to be a great Xmas pressie instead.
