Re: [Elecraft] Adjustment of L34 on a K2

2006-02-26 Thread Manuel Wilches

Charlie:
I have done this 2 days ago and the same thing happened to me (I am still on
part II).

L34 is on top of the can for the peak signal/noise.
I cannot give you any technical explanation for this but I am sure some of
the guys on the Reflector will.

I will be liestening, that is for sure.
I have my 40 meters only receiver on since yesterday and I am absolutely
amazed with the receiver.

On a K2, how critical is the adjustment of L34? This is an adjustment
that peaks the IF amplifier. The manual states a peak should be found one
turn of the slug down from the top however mine seams to be peaking right
at the top of the can. Actually, I cannot go through the peak as it just
gets louder with the slug all the way at the top.

The adjustment in question is on page 64 of the K2 manual, IF Amplifier
Alignment.

I thought I would revisit this after completing alignment as I have done
40M alignment on that same page as well as done the transmitter alignment.

Just trying to peak and tweak to be sure everything is maxed out!

Charlie, W0YG..

Here is a technique I used to adjust L34 - While performing the I.F.
Amplifier Alignment section of Alignment and Test Part II, I used
Spectrogram (just about any program that displays the received signals
should work). I had meant to put this hint on the reflector long ago and
keep forgetting.

Follow the instructions for I.F. Amplifier Alignment. When you get to the
last step plug the PC sound card into the Speaker Jack (not Headphone as it
attenuates some high frequencies - but it probably don't make that much
difference). You will notice some noise spread across the spectrum
displayed. Make sure the XFIL is set for FL-1 OP-1. Now continue to adjust
L34 for a compromise of the lowest displayed noise and the highest level of
the tone (signal). You will find a point where the noise is almost non
existent.

Even though I had adjusted this to what I thought was the best by ear,
after using this method and then re-adjusting the AGC threshold, I was
amazed at the difference in sensitivity and audio level (I think the noise
de-senses the AGC - perhaps the experts can explain this). Maybe this is
one of the problems/reasons some people complain about low output volume.

KE0X

And if you wind the slug out a bit further?
It's not normally necessary to stop winding just because the slug is
level with the top of the can.

Or possibly you've got a too high value capacitor across the coil?
