RE: [Elecraft] K3 Pre Release Manual
Fred, I was the one who decided what was "good enough" for the preliminary images so everyone could have a preview peek at the manual. I had expected Eric to post both the large and small Acrobat files, but even the large file doesn't compare to what can be done. The small file was intended for those who cannot access the internet with a broadband connection. At least they could see what it'll look like, if not as clearly as it will appear in the printed manual. When it comes to file size and image resolution, there is no "free lunch". More detail requires more pixels. More pixels require a larger file. A lot of amazing things have been accomplished with compression schemes that reduce the file size without losing apparent detail. They fool the eye into seeing a sharper image than is really there. Of course I used those compression methods throughout. But that's not why you saw fuzzy images. As everyone knows, the reason shipment of the K3 has been delayed is because of vendor delays with critical components. The K3 I used to write the assembly procedures is no exception. If you look closely you'll see a "dummy board" where the KNB3 noise blanker goes. That's even easier to see now since Wayne asked me this morning to provide a more "final" version of the overall K3 (Figure 1) to replace the quick, temporary image I had used while awaiting a KNB3. That image now lacks "keystoning" and has much improved resolution. The size of the Acrobat file also increased substantially because of that one page. To shorten the time between final parts and shipment, I shot a lot of pictures, such as the original Figure 1, as "place holders" until I had the production parts on hand to shoot the final photos. We're close, but I'm still adding and editing. Fortunately, these days it takes very little time to produce printed, bound copies to support shipments. I am making full use of the delays to tweak and (hopefully) improve the documentation. Eric and Wayne were balancing everyone's desire for a "peek" with what I had available a few days ago. The printed images will be every bit as good as any you've seen in other Elecraft manuals. Other manuals I've written for Wayne and Eric that lean on photographs include the full set of XV manuals, and the assembly procedures in the KX1 manual. The difference here is that we have over 150 photos in the K3 Assembly manual (including the illustrated parts list). I try to choose the resolution that produces a nice image showing what is needed without making the document file overly large. I hope you'll forgive me for frustrating you with fuzzy preliminary pictures, and I do hope you're pleased with the manual you get with your K3. Hopefully the actual kit will contain a PRINTED manual with normal high resolution photos. This copy of the manual is a PRELIMINARY one, and as has been pointed out, it is quite normal to reduce the resolution of images in web documents so that the many people who don't have unlimited broadband connections can download them without tying up the phone for hours, -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Pre Release Manual
I hear you, Fred. And I personally would fall into the camp that would prefer a 30MB manual with high-res photos. :-) But as a tech writer for a major silicon valley semiconductor company, I know that PDF file size is always a bone of contention. Short of offering two different versions of the manual (and I don't know of anyone who has actually done that), I doubt there's any way to meet everybody's expectations. Especially in the amateur market, there are a lot of customers whose only practical Internet solution is still modem dial-up, not necessarily because of the expense of broadband, but because broadband simply isn't available short of satellite (very expensive by comparison, and not all that broad anyway). Since the US is practically a generation behind most other industrial countries in the universal deployment of a true broadband infrastructure, and seems politically indisposed to pull development of this vital national resource into the public sector where it rightfully belongs, I don't expect this situation to change in the near future. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Pre Release Manual
Dave, The resolution of photo graphics in a PDF file is not usually a function of the camera -- it's usually a functon of a trade-off made by the tech writer between high resolution and a manageable PDF file size. This manual if made with full-resolution photos would probably be about 30 MB rather than 3 MB. Most people wouldn't like that, some people would. You can't please all the people all the time... :-) Bill / W5WVO David Yarnes wrote: I downloaded mine (with no problem from Eric's first post), and I have skimmed through it. Looks pretty good to me. My only complaint, from that limited "look-see", is that just about all the photographs seem pretty marginal. They are certainly good enough for the purpose of showing what needs to be connected to what, etc., but they sure lack sharpness. I wonder what camera they used? I would suggest an upgrade. But, alas, this is the "Assembly Manual", and not the "Operating Manual". I suspect most were hoping for the latter. But the assembly manual did confirm one thing for sure--no soldering iron required! At least I didn't see anything saying you would need one, but I might have missed something. Obviously though, we are getting closer--much closer hopefully. I've been spending the summer up on the Oregon coast, and for much of it I've been wondering if I should give Elecraft a different shipping address. But it now appears I will be back in Arizona by the time the radio ships, so not to worry I guess. this causes me to have another serious concern. What if the radio comes just when I really need to be spending time removing all the weeds that have probably invaded my yard over the summer? Decisions! Decisions!
