Any thoughts on weatherproofing the BL-1 for outdoor installation? I plan on running coax from my K2 out the side of the house to the balun and then to a longwire. It seems the RS project could be sealed, but would the plastic case weather well? Thanks. Drilling holes in Altoids tins is easy. Use brad point bits that woodworkers use. You can get a whole set at some place like Harbor Freight for about 6 bucks. Typically you need 3/8, 5/16 and sometimes 1/4. They are cheaper than a step bit, and I think they work BETTER on this stuff. The center of the bit has a sharp point that immediately digs into the soft tin preventing any lateral movement. Then it has shoulders that scribe the circle in the metal. Use a drill press and just enough pressure to watch the scribing action. Soon the little hole center will just pop free. Stop there and you have an absolutely perfect hole with no distortion of the surrounding metal. I used to back up the bit with a chunk of wood inside the Altoids tin, but the brad points cut so cleanly with so little pressure that it isn't even necessary to do a back up. BTW, brad point bits will give you perfectly clean holes in PC board too. I cut all the panel holes in the SW20+ shown on the same web page with them. Perfect holes with no burrs. Just let the bit cut without forcing it. They are also great for cutting lands or islands on PCB for manhattan-style construction. I just let the bit cut until it has cut through the copper. Leaves a perfect isolated circult to solder parts to similar to the diamond end mill that AmQRP offered for awhile. I thing they called it an Island Cutter, in fact, but it is no longer available. I discarded most of the bits of the kit, retaining only the ferrite core wire. After winding the balun, I put it in a piece of 1.5 Schedule 40 pipe with 2 endcaps. Not NICER, but different. I stuck mine in the traditional Altoids tin. I had to replace the PC-mounted BNC with a chassis mount type. If you don't, the hole for the BNC impinges on the cover and you have to clearance the cover which looks even more mickeymouse than putting a BL-1 in an Altoids tin. http://webpages.charter.net/ejorgens I also removed the Elecraft terminals which I never cared for as I always set up antennas with banana plugs. I wired banana jacks directly to the board. I looked around for banana jacks that would screw right into the existing terminals, but the terminals are 6-32 and the jacks are typically smaller, fine thread things. So a little more work than just cutting a couple holes, but it works fb. There is actually a 3rd hole, but I only had 2 banana jacks last night when I did all this. Besides the Cinnamon BL-1, the photo shows a similar treatment for the Wintergreen XG-1 and Spearmint DL-1. I haven't built the noise generator yet because I ran out of flavors. The only other choice is licorice and I don't like licorice. Maybe I could just throw them out...something to consider. BTW, notice the DL-1 chart in the lid which shows power levels from 50 mw to 5 watts and the corresponding Vrms. Why Altoids tins? Why not? I use the product so the enclosures are free. All these little projects stack nicely on a shelf when not in use. And visitors to the shack are intrigued even if it has become a ham cliché.
