Be warned Vic, you might become addicted to working long haul DX on 6m!

I have a K3, an HF beam which shows a 2.5:1 SWR on 6 (tunable to 1:1, of

never had a 6 meter QSO in 53 years as a ham!

THANKS JAMES. The new moxon is built and up at 30ft. or so. This should be
a good test if it is working properly...

Re: [Elecraft] Put your K3 on 6M tonight

2009-05-09 Thread David Yarnes
Last year about this time, Duffy shamed me into building a
6 meter Moxon in anticipation of this sprint event. It
wasn't really very hard to build, and it works great! I
even took it up our 9000 ft. nearby mountain and operated as
a rover. I'm sorely tempted to do the same thing again,
since the temperature here in the desert right now is 100+,
and it only takes about 45 minutes to get from my house to
the top of Mt. Lemmon where it's considerably cooler. But
my daughter is flying in shortly (it's Mother's Day tomorrow
in case any of you forgot to buy something!), so I'll have
to just operate from the house. Still, I can get the Moxon
up about 25 feet, so maybe I'll hear something! So, keep an
ear open for DM42!

The 6M Spring Sprint is this evening,
http://www.sysadnet.com/vhfsprintrules.htm

While a dedicated 6M antenna is best, a simple dipole will work, some
HF antennas will load OK on 6M. A 40M dipole will be near resonance on
its 7th harmonic on 6M. Try the K3 tuner.

If you have never been on 6M before, this is a good time to see how
the band works, who is on, and pick up a few grids.

I will be in DM66ff operating portable. Look for me. - Duffey

, so get that K3 on 6M and have some fun. the Sprint runs this
evening from 2300Z May 9 to 0300Z May 10. You will need to exchange
your grid square, a close approximation which you can find on QRZ.com.

Any suggestions for the best frequency to listen for CW activity?

Re: [Elecraft] Put your K3 on 6M tonight

2009-05-09 Thread Bill W5WVO
It is still a little in advance of the usual start of the summer sporadic-E
season, so it is unlikely (though possible) that 6 meters will be open anywhere
tonight. (Strange timing for a 6-meter contest; don't really get it. Why not
wait for a couple more weeks when the band is more likely to be open?)

To answer your question, CW activity when the band is dead is usually right on
the calling frequency 50.125. When the band is open, CW activity generally
drops
down to 50.100 and below. But don't expect to find anybody there if the band
isn't open.

6 meters is a really fun band, but it won't be really fun until it starts to
open on a regular basis in a couple more weeks. Don't judge it until then!
