Re: [Elecraft] test

2019-07-23 Thread David Woolley
The longer established email programs that support HTML mail will always
send it as multipart/alternative, with both HTML and plain text
versions. Almost certainly your email program does that. However, it
appears that there are an increasing number of email programs that only
send HTML or other rich text versions.

I think the list software is stripping out the text/html variant, rather
than rendering the HTML as plain text.

Re: [Elecraft] Test 2018-05-20

2018-05-20 Thread Chris Hallinan
Please ignore? Don't you know, this is the Elecraft mailing list? Someone
will find a way to comment on every thread, interesting or not, and
perpetuate it until Eric declares the thread closed. And then, there will
be several additional posts by people who didn't get the "thread closed"
message, and on it goes. Let's see how many posts this thread gets as an
interesting experiment and a fun poke to those among us who still don't
know how to use the Delete key on e-mail they don't care to read ;)

(If you're reading a thread with the subject "Test..." well then, 'nuff
said!)

Re: [Elecraft] Test serial-to-USB converter

2016-07-20 Thread John R. Lonigro

Jan,

In the "good old days", you could check a serial port by connecting pin
2 to pin3 at the end of the serial cable. Set the port to software
handshaking (or else connect the control pins together in a similar
manner-I don't recall the pin numbers). Then run a dumb terminal
program. What you type will be echoed to your screen, even with "echo"
turned off. If echo is turned on, you'd see what you typed twice. That
would prove the signal made it out and back and the interface works.
The baudrate doesn't matter, as long as it's the same for transmitting
and receiving.

John AA0VE

Jan,

The best way to test a USB to serial converter is by substitution with
a known good one, or by substitution of a known good working serial
device connected to the questionable converter cable.

Yes, a power surge or a lightning event can damage serial interfaces
as well as USB interfaces.

Since your USB ports on the computer seem to work, borrow a known good
USB to serial converter and try it out - preferably one with an FTDI
chipset.

If you have any other devices that use a serial COM port interface,
see if they work with your USB to serial adapter - if so, the adapter
is probably OK, but remember that in the event of a power surge,
multiple failures are possible even though in normal troubleshooting
we assume only a single failure.

You can test the USB to serial converter with a 'scope and an RS-232
breakout box, but you have to know the proper RS-232 levels to
understand what is happening. A null modem loopback cable can be
helpful if you have to proper driving software application for that
testing. I did that during my years of PC modem testing, but that was
more than 30 years ago and the software ran under DOS - not helpful now.

Absolutely. I had some "strangeness" occur with a Compaq laptop a number of
years ago and support instructed me to remove the battery for a full minute
(they have a "supercapacitor" that must fully discharge) and it fixed the
problem. Subsequently I ran into that with my XYLs Toshiba laptop which was
restored the same way.

A multitude of USB 'sins' can often be cured by a complete powering down of
the computer, including pulling the power cord (on desktops) and removing
the battery (laptops). A soft reboot doesn't always reset the hardware but
10+ seconds of zero power to them usually does. In this condition, the
10+ only
power in the computer is the RTC battery.

All this test costs is time and most of the time, it works here.

Then make sure that the OS hasn't assigned it/them a new port value
(com2 instead of com5). You may have to use Device Manager in Windoze to
force it to accepting the value you want.

This is why when I built the shack computer, I went back to using real
serial ports, which are far more stable.

Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Test serial-to-USB converter

2016-07-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Instead of buying a new adapter, you might consider upgrading your K3 with a
KIO3B interface board that contains a built-in USB port. There are several
other enhancements in the KIO3B that may make it a "no-brainer" upgrade!

Don,

Thank you for the suggestions. I do not have another FTDI cable, but it
seems that this is the way to go, and I can order one from Elecraft (since I
understand that cheaper alternatives my result in a cable that is
incompatible with recent drivers). As for why the serial to serial did not
work: I also had a size adapter in there, so that may have been at fault.
The most straightforward test would be replacement. If that works, I will
contact MDS for a replacement converter as well.

Thank you,

Jan, KX2A

hardware but 10+ seconds of zero power to them usually does. In this
condition, the only power in the computer is the RTC battery.

All this test costs is time and most of the time, it works here.

Then make sure that the OS hasn't assigned it/them a new port value
(com2 instead of com5). You may have to use Device Manager in Windoze
to force it to accepting the value you want.

This is why when I built the shack computer, I went back to using real
serial ports, which are far more stable.

Good luck.

If you have some wire you can do a loopback test. If your cable ends in a
9-pin connector you tie together pins 2 and 3, 4 and 6, and 7 and 8. See
http://www.ni.com/tutorial/3450/en/

You can try using the Hyperterminal (IIRC) program if you are in Windows to
test the serial port. I'm not sure what device an FTDI cable may appear to
be in Windows as I mostly run Linux. If you are using Linux you can use minicom.

Re: [Elecraft] Test serial-to-USB converter

2016-07-18 Thread Cliff Frescura
Another test you can try is to short pins 2 and 3 on the RS-232 side of the
converter (loop back) and then use a terminal program to see if characters
that you type are echoed back.

Some notes:

1. make sure handshaking is off/none
2. make sure local echo is off
3. data rate does not matter
4. there are several (free) terminal emulation programs out there.
HyperTerminal used to be bundled with XP but is no longer free. However you
can download a trial version here

Don,

Thank you for the suggestions. I do not have another FTDI cable, but it
seems that this is the way to go, and I can order one from Elecraft
(since I understand that cheaper alternatives my result in a cable that
is incompatible with recent drivers). As for why the serial to serial
did not work: I also had a size adapter in there, so that may have been
at fault. The most straightforward test would be replacement. If that
works, I will contact MDS for a replacement converter as well.

Thank you,

Not nearly good enough for JT65b on 144 MHz. Have you done the temperature
compensation?

I use my KX3 on 144 MHz but the difference is I am using a transverter with an
IF of 14 MHz where the drift is proportionally less to start with and the
external transverter has a very high stability TCXO fitted ( the original TCXO
in the transverter was not good enough I found).

I'm not sure if the issue is Microsoft or QTH. (your live.com account is

Hello Bill,

You are not alone, no posts received here either yesterday June 21st. Based
on past experience I do not believe that Elecraft is to blame.

I posted a message to the Elecraft List yesterday at 19:13 Luxembourg time,
and it did not appear until 09:28 today, along with several other posts sent
earlier by other people.

Hi guy's,
I hope you can see this as I won't.
Why's that? you ask, because I too use GMail's email service and I have NEVER
seen my own postings to ANY mailing list whilst I continue to use a GMail
account for posting.
I have raised the issue with GMail and to date there has been a deafening
silence in reply.
So, I just accept the fact now that I cannot see my own postings to the
reflector, not that it worries me greatly because I can see them in my sent
items folder.
I use MS Outlook Express for sending email via pop3 on GMail. (It aint too
flash, but it is free and is well integrated into the OS of choice that I use.

Re: [Elecraft] Test

2011-07-17 Thread Dave Wright
For mailing lists, Gmail typically does NOT reflect back whatever you post to
the list.

It automatically filters out the posts that you send to avoid duplication in
your gmail mailbox. Every list I belong to is the same way; I subscribe to them
using Gmail and I never get my posts back, but they are posted to the mailing
list. However, if you go to the online version of the mailing list, you'll see
that your posts are getting through.

3rd attempt . I dunno what's going on here.

So I went to work some RTTY today using MMTTY with the K3, and can't get it to
transmit. I'm using AFSK A, 45 baud, the mark and space freqs are the same in
the
program and the rig, the correct sound card is selected, nothing is muted, VOX
is on.
MMTTY is set to use sound.

The MMTTY tuning indicator looks like I'm transmitting, but the rig isn't
getting the
sound - no diddle. The K3 meter bars all go blank.

What am I missing? RX is fine.

it refused to transmit RTTY in CW mode. Probably not your case, but worth a

Re: [Elecraft] test

2011-07-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Mike,

We need more information - there are a lot of possibilities.

It sounds like you do not have enough audio drive to the K3.

How have you connected to the K3?
Are you connecting to the K3 Line-in from the soundcard Line-out?
Are you using an interface box or just a soundcard?
If you are using an interface box, have you configured it for line level
output - most come configured for microphone level which is a much lower
AF voltage than line level.

You must drive the audio to the K3 sufficiently high to produce 4 bars
on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing. Ignore the common advice
(valid for other radios) to use the audio level to produce your desired
output - with the K3, set the power level with the power knob and adjust
the audio drive to produce the 4 to 5 bars of ALC indication.

There is a separate Line-in selection setting for the K3 in the menu.
Adjust the level with the MIC knob.

When you get in a situation like this, where ssb voicekeying is
not working, or afsk diddle isn't diddling, it is helpful to
temporarily plug some headphones into the sound card output. If
you can hear the sound, then the problem is further downstream.
If you can't hear the sound, the problem is in the computer.

Hi Don -

I'm going from the soundcard (it's USB) out to the K3 line-in. And last time I
used
it it worked fine, PSK doesn't xmit either.

No interface, just the soundcard.

I can't get any alc reading, the rig doesn't go into xmit. By audio drive I
take it
you mean then Mic knob. My line-in level is 23. I get an alc reading in SSB,
but
not data. If I plug fones into the sound card, it is making the tones.

I don't see a Line-in menu setting. There is a MIC SEL that's set to Line-In.

Re: [Elecraft] test

2011-07-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Mike,

If the K3 is not going into transmit, do you have the VOX set on for
AFSK-A mode? If you chose not to do that, you will have to use the one
transistor circuit from a serial port to activate the K3 PTT.

There are audio level controls in the computer too - right click on the
speaker icon (assuming it is displayed) to open them, otherwise go to
the Control Panel to adjust them. Set the Line-out level to about 2/3
of full slider. Be sure the Line Out is not muted.

Yes, the Mic Sel setting of Line-in is what I was referring to.

Turn off HTML and use 'plain text' or 'fixed width' in your email
