Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500: No Output

2022-12-14 Thread Lyn Norstad
Dave -

Looking at your very nice website and the "Radio-end station setup," I'm
wondering why you are using an external antenna switch? In my experience,
especially for remote operation, you'll generally have a much more
fool-proof installation using the KAT500's internal antenna switch. The way
you're doing it, the KAT has no way to know which antenna it is supposed to
be matching - and thereby could lead to many problems - including damage to
the finals.

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA 500: No Output

Hello-- I have a 3 yr old KPA500 that has just exhibited it's first problem.
No amplification! I am remote controlling it via the remote client over the
internet from 2000 miles away. Nothing has changed in the remote shack and
no wiring has been disturbed. There is no output from the KPA on any band. I
can see the 72 Volt B+, and the temp of the heatsink, and I can control the
fan speed, so I have control of the unit. The client shows the exciter power
through the amp and the SWR. There are no alarms and I have hit alarm reset
and had the power plug pulled and reset. I'd guess the PTT line is somehow
open but... asking if anyone has had a similar problem.
tnx de dave

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3 vs FT-710

2022-12-14 Thread Eric Fitzgerald

Greg,

I think it is unreasonable to compare radios that come with two
completely different price points (not to mention delivery dates).  The
KX3 fully tricked out is like, what, 3x the cost? Don't get me wrong, I
absolutely prefer the fully loaded KX3 in this comparison otherwise.

Dealing with Yaesu after the purchase is a lot different than dealing
with Elecraft, plus the support community here is second to none.
Trying to get help on Yeasu's various reflectors is pretty painful.
Nothing like this group.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 front panel locked

2022-12-14 Thread Gary Johnson via Elecraft
Helping a friend connect his KPA1500 to a K3. The AUXBUS is working, following
the radio etc. like normal. However, as soon as that cable is plugged into the
KPA, it’s front panel buttons all cease to function. Remote control via USB or
ethernet work fine. The AUXBUS cable is a proper one, not a VGA cable. I’ve
never seen this before and can’t find any reference to a locked front panel.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 App

2022-12-14 Thread Joel Black
Thanks, Jack. Yeah, I realized what I did after Walter sent the link. I went
here (https://elecraft.com/pages/kpa1500-kpa500-kat500-remote-software) the
first time and only saw the Windows files. I thought I had seen them for macOS
previously but, for the life of me, I couldn’t find them again.

Thanks again.

Subject: [Elecraft] K4 production software release (R32) now available

Release 32 has been beta tested (R32.BETA2) and has now been moved to
production status.

See release notes below, or on our K4 software page, or view them in the
updater on the K4 itself. (For your convenience, the list below shows all
significant changes since production release 31.)

Software development is continuing in multiple areas, including remote
control.

 R32 (PRODUCTION) ==

December 13, 2022

- SSB/ESSB TRANSMIT AUDIO LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE IMPROVED: The nominal
SSB transmit audio low-frequency rolloff can now be moved down from about
200 Hz to 100 Hz. (Amplitude at 100 Hz then increases by nearly 20 dB.)
This selection is made using the new "TX Audio LF Cutoff, SSB" menu entry.
IMPORTANT NOTES: (1) The 100 Hz selection is *always* applied in ESSB
mode. (2) In addition to using this new SSB setting, you can control the
transmit passband in all modes using TX EQ. (3) If you use USB or LSB for
audio DATA modes such as PACTOR that require fast turnaround times, you
should not use the 100 Hz SSB setting, because it slows turnaround by
about 20 milliseconds. (The high-performance digital filter required to
obtain a lower passband has additional "taps," resulting in greater
delay.)

- KPA1500 / KPA500 LOSS OF BUTTON PRESSES: In previous releases, some amp
front panel button presses could be missed by the K4 due to the concurrent
handling of other band-change activity.

- RADIO LOCKUP DURING VFO MOVEMENT AT ~5600 KHZ: One operator discovered
a radio lockup when moving the VFO in the vicinity of 5600-5620 kHz. This
was due to incorrect lookup of ATU LC segment data, which has now been
corrected.

- TERMINATION OF DVR MESSAGES no longer causes occasional loss of mic
audio.

- REPEATER OFFSETS are now correctly applied to VFO B when in SPLIT.

- IMPROVED EEPROM DATA VERIFICATION.

FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS & MACROS

- The "TQX;" command now bypasses other command processing delays to
provide a more real-time response during "TX;" / "RX;" command
transitions.

- DUPLICATE "TX;" COMMAND while in transmit mode no longer exits transmit.

- ADDED "EE0;" command to reset all radio state and menu parameters to
defaults, with the exception of factory calibration data.

- ADDED "TQX" GET COMMAND (extension to "TQ" TX status query): If the GET
query is "TQ;", then the K4 is considered to still be in transmit mode
during the S-meter holdoff time (300 ms), even though receive audio can be
heard. If the GET query is "TQX;", then the S-meter holdoff time is not
considered to be part of the transmit state. This allows an application to
find out more quickly when actual RF transmit has ended, which may result
in a more responsive user interface (when playing DVR messages, for
example).

- ADDED "AG$+nnn" (AF gain increment/decrement).

- ADDED "VC" command to properly handle configuration of per-mode coarse
tuning steps. "VT" command also improved to correctly handle A/B VFO
swaps, etc.

- IMPROVED "#HWFC" command to allow modification of waterfall color mode
for both panadapters on the external monitor.

[Elecraft] KPA500 App

2022-12-14 Thread Joel Black
Before I go looking too hard, is there a macOS app for the KPA500 or *just* the
Windows app on the Elecraft site.

If it matters, I’m looking to interface the KPA500/KAT500 combo to a Flex 6400…
Maybe. I’ve not bought the amp or tuner… Yet.

My preferred OS is macOS but I do use Win11 in a VM for Winlink using my Flex.

It’s worth the look. We have most apps for both Windows and Mac.
By the way, the KPA500 firmware was developed and is still maintained using a
Mac mini, which is a good
indication as to how important both Windows and macOS are to us.

Welcome to the Elecraft world; we hope you will enjoy your KPA500/KAT500 pair!

[Elecraft] K3 RF meter behavior has me confused - help please?

2022-12-14 Thread Adrian Smith
Hi all. I'm new to HF, new to the K3, and relatively new to ham radio so
please go easy on me.

I only have my Technician so I've been listening a lot more than
transmitting. I completed assembly of the radio about a year ago but left
out the KPA3 until I was sure the radio was working correctly. (Did I
mention this was an old kit I got from a SK auction a year ago?)

I decided this past weekend to install the KPA3. Installation went
perfectly, the radio passed its TX calibration and I started looking at
more power. Now something odd seems to be happening. I've included the
power calibration results below for complete information.

K3 TX Gain Calibration data written on 2022-12-14 at 17:04:45
K3 Serial Number 00746
K3 MCU version 05.67 on COM9 at 38400 bit/s
Elecraft K3 Utility Version 1.20.1.15
1900 kHz TXGain LP 36
3750 kHz TXGain LP 21
5336 kHz TXGain LP 28
7150 kHz TXGain LP 35
10125 kHz TXGain LP 30
14200 kHz TXGain LP 16
18110 kHz TXGain LP 19
21200 kHz TXGain LP 14
24930 kHz TXGain LP 13
29000 kHz TXGain LP 21
52000 kHz TXGain LP 19
1900 kHz TXGain HP 30
3750 kHz TXGain HP 36
5336 kHz TXGain HP 48
7150 kHz TXGain HP 56
10125 kHz TXGain HP 38
14200 kHz TXGain HP 18
18110 kHz TXGain HP 13
21200 kHz TXGain HP 10
24930 kHz TXGain HP 08
29000 kHz TXGain HP 18
52000 kHz TXGain HP 05

I'm running the output to a wattmeter from there to a 50W dummy load. When
I key my paddle no matter how much power I set the amp to all I get as
output on the onscreen RF meter is between 10 and 20W. The wattmeter seems
to be registering correctly - as I increase power the output watts increase.

If I transmit voice the onscreen RF meter will display up to 100W depending
on the volume of my voice and the wattmeter appears to be reading correctly.

Please note: I've made sure all my CW CONFIG settings are correct, and I'm
sure I've got the radio set to the RF meter and not the ALC meter.

Is there something I'm not understanding about the onscreen RF meter
operation, or am I doing something wrong? Are there other tests I should be
running?

Thanks in advance for your patience!

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 vs FT-710

2022-12-14 Thread Greg Herman
On cyber Monday I picked up an FT – 710 for a great price of $1050. If
this would’ve been my first radio I probably would I fell in love with it,,
but unfortunately for Yaesu it was my third radio. 1=IC703, 2=
KX3/PX3/KXPA100, 3= FT710
The display on the FT 710 is beautiful, but unfortunately I have to put on
reading glasses to use it, whereas my old KX3/PX3 I can use without
reading glasses in my camper. The audio output on the 710 was excellent
for my OM hearing. But to me the background noise on the KX3 seems just a
little smoother, not sure how to describe that? The PX3 panadapter puts
the Yaesu to shame, Yaesu has a lot of work to do on their approach
towards a panadapter Elecraft has the end-user in mine on their panadapter
. The adjustability of frequency input was kind of a pain on the Yaesu.
Very easy to adjust what you want on the KX3 via tapping the rat button.
Antenna tuner?, Well we all know who the winner is there.
And the winner is? The KX3, the Yaesu is on his way back to GigaParts.
PS if you’re looking for a good radio on a budget I would recommend Yaesu,
they do need a lot of firmware updates to make it a better user-friendly
radio
