[Elecraft] KX1 ant. and cntpse. ques.
Good Day Everyone, I was noodling around some KX1 topics on Nabble and found this posting by W2XS from 7/08: For 40, 30, and 20 meters, I use a 42-foot wire with a large nut on the end. The wire is thrown over a tree branch. A Pomona BNC-to-Bindng Posts adaptor is used. Three counterpoise wires cut to one quarter wave for each band (approx. 33', 23', and 16.5') are connected to the ground binding post. My question is whether *all three* counterpoises are attached to the binding post *at once*, or is he talking about changing the out the counterpoise as he changes bands? I've been using a one-size-fits-all counterpoise and was wondering if I've missed something basic and very useful. [Elecraft] Good QRP practice?
Good Day Everyone, In a recent discussion concering KX3 battery life, Wayne N6KR mentioned: Transceive operating time from an internal battery will be determined by voltage or energy-density limitations of the 8 AA cells being used. You'd probably be transmitting something like 10% of the time (good QRP practice). I'm really new in amateur radio and even newer (if possible) in working QRP with my KX1 and working on my skill set. [Elecraft] Noise with KX1 and Powerwerx PS
Good Day Everyone, After reading some of the discussions regarding power supplies, I've recently bought a Powerwerx 30 amp switching power supply. I knew that this was way more than I needed for present needs, but I didn't want to under-buy and have to buy up later. Anyway, the unit supplies 4-5 watts indicated by the ATU, and I have an SWR of 1.0 to about 1.9 using the Elecraft rescommended antennas (This my only rig, and I use it from my desk). Here's the problem: Independent of band or frequency selected, I get a noise that sounds something like a small jet taking off or the whoosh that the dishwasher makes on wash cycle--WWWUUUSSSHh (Well, sort of like that.) The sound starts low and finishes high and then goes away briefly and then recurs fairly regularly. The noise isn't there when I use battery mode. Am I doing something wrong here, or is this the nature of this type of power supply? Re: [Elecraft] Noise with KX1 and Powerwerx supply
Tnx for the responses. I'm going to try the isolation approach suggested below. Once again, I'm amazed at the depth of my ignorance (well, not THAT amazed). Tnx es 73 John KK4BOB On Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 10:57 AM, Chip Stratton c...@strattonfamily.uswrote: If you start looking for an alternative, try the TDK Lambda LS25-15 (for 1.7A), LS35-15 (2.4A) or LS50-15 (3.4A). These are switch mode power supplies that I've found to be fairly well shielded, light weight, conservatively rated, and not expensive from Newark Electronics. They are nominal fixed 15V supplies, but their output can be set from 13.5V to 16.5V. The supply is contained within a metal cage, but you will probably want to mount it in another enclosure with an on/off switch and banana or Powerpole terminals, and to protect the 120v input terminals. These are especially good for the KX1, since maximum output comes with a 14V power input, which most small 12V supplies can't quite deliver. Is the K1 the same way? They are also good for the K2 with internal battery, since you need 14V for proper charging. It might be hard to find any switch mode power supply that won't put some noise into an antenna that is sitting right next to, though. If you can move the antenna feed point 5 or 6 feet away from the PS with some coax you might have better luck. You might also get a copy of the current issue of QEX. There is an article in which the author details his quest to turn a RF noisy switch mode PS into a very quiet one. 73 Chip __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- John Flynn Tallahassee, Florida USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Multiband end-fed dipole with KX1
Good Day Paul, My first rig was a KX1 and I ran an end-fed wire (34' as I recall) with three counterpoises. It worked on 20, 30, and 40 quite well. It wouldn't load on 80, but I made QSOs with it anyway. A year or so later I bought a KX3 and ran the same antenna with good results. Then about 6 months ago, I bought the EARCHI EFHW. I'm using the suggested setup--30' wire to the matchbox with 25' of coax. The KX3 loves it and it loads 6 though 80 FB--160 not so well. The only drawback is the counterpoise. Just for grins I took out the trusty KX1 and tried it on the EARCHI, The AT didn't like it. SWL was 2.0 where with it was 1.0--1.3 consistently with the simple wire-counterpoise setup. So, maybe I need to lengthen the wire as another poster noted. Just FYI see http://www.sotabeams.co.uk/efhw/ for a discussion of EFHW. 72 John K4ARQ On Sat, Feb 22, 2014 at 5:59 AM, PGSchreier pgschre...@swissonline.chwrote: Hi gang, I would like to find a 40/30/20 meter end-fed dipole I can run with my KX1 and its tuner. As the name suggests, straight key bug, or cootie key only. Lots of activities and awards to chase. Also the group has a very active reflector. Check out WWFF (World Wide Flora and Fauna), POTA (Parks on the Air) and SOTA (Summits on the Air). You can be an activator or chaser/hunter. Another activity I've never seen mentioned is CW nets. I check in most mornings at 8:30 with HBN--Hit and Bounce Net (east coast). Finally, sign up for a level 2 or 3 online course with the CW Academy.
